IMPROVED PAINT-BRUSH.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the me To all wha/m, 'it ma/y concern Be it known that we, FRANCIS P. FURNALD, J r., of New York city, in the county and State of New York, REMICK W. CnAMPIom'of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, and State of New York, and ISAAC N. DAYIES, of Bergen City, in the county of Hudson, New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Paint- Brushes; and We do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being-had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to providel a more durable and economical connection of the handles and brushes of paint and other similar brushes than is afforded by the present construction.
The invention consists in an improved method of packing the upper part of the ferrnle, which confines the bristles to the handle, by means of vegetable fibre, bristles, or hair, or other similar substances, cut into short lengths, and arranged in the manner hereinafter more fully specified.
The drawing represents a sectional elevation of a brush constructed according to'our improvements, and two detail views of the packing employed by us as arranged for use. 4
We economize the bristles in respect of their length, and to provide the requisite strength in the connection of the bristles to the handles.
These brushes are commonly made by lling the binding-ferrule A about half` its length With the large or but ends of the bristles, as many as can well be pressed in, and by lling the other end of the said fer-, rule with disks of cork, leather, and other substances, having. central holes, and then drawing the pointed and tapered handles through the bristles and the said packing from the end of the, ferrule from which the bristles project.
This wedges the bristles out rmly against the ferrule, and to some extent also the leather, or other packing, but the nature of the leather, cork, and similar packing, as also plastic substances, such as plaster, which are sometimes used, is such, that in this wedging or packing the particles do not move freely, or alike in all places, and a uniform and suciently rigid packing is not always attained.
We have found that'by the employment of bristles, or strong fibrous substance, such as the Tampico grass and Sisal hemp of commerce, and other similar substances resembling bristles in structure, cut into thev proper lengths, and made up into packages, as represented in Figures 2 and 3, and packed into the space in the ferrule above the ends 'of the bristles at B, previons to driving the handles through, we are enabled to pack the same more tightly, and more in uniformity with the part of the packing formed by the bristles of the brush, and we therefore propose to construct brushes inthis way, using any substance of the chai'- acter and form above indicated.
Having thus described our invention,
What we claim as-new, andl desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is-
Packing the ferrules A, above the bristles, with out bristles, grass, hair, or other substance having similar form, `cut into the required lengths, and inserted and packed in the manner described.
' The above specification of our invention signed by us, this 6th day of April, 1869.
