Description

'inited tatw gatnt twin;
E. A. DAYTON, OF R1CHMOND,VIRGINIA.
Lemm mam NO. 89,687, amd Mary 4, 1869.
IMPIROVENENT IN BEARING-S-I'OR VRTICAL SHAI'TS. I
The Scheule refen'e to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all 'who'm it ma/y concern:
Be it known that 'I, E. A. DAY'roN, of Richmond, in the county of Henn'co, and State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bearings for Vertical Shafts; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of. this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in bearings for Vertical shafts, designed to be applied either as steps for the ends of the shaits, orintermediate bearings, which said bearings are especially adapted to facilitate thelubiication of the shafts, as hereinaiter more fully specified.
Figure 1 represents a plan view of my improved bearing.
Figura 2 is a horizontal section, taken on the line y y of fig. 3.
Figure 3 represents an elevation, partly in section,
Figures 4 and 5 represent a modification of the method of tightening and adjusting the wearing-surfaces.
Similar letters of reference indicate corrosponding parts A represents the body of the box, which may be provided With lugs B, for securing to the framing, or it may, in a modified form, be secured thereto 'by letiziing into theframe or bridge-tree, as represented in The said part A has. a central hole through' it Vertically, larger than the diameter of the shaft as seen in fig. 2, at G, and a tubular extension D, rising from the bottom, around thesaid hole, forming, between it and the ontershell, a space for the oil and the adjustable journal E of the shaft, which consists of a cylindrical piece, fitted to the shaft and hollowed from the bottom sufiiciently to provide space for the tubular projection D of the box.
The bearing-suifaces are segmental pieces F, fitted to the exterior of the journal E, and placed in the space of the box, between the shell and the part D, and adj usted against the journal E by the set-screws G, tapped through the shell of thebox.
The said space may be filled-with oil, which will have free application to the bearing-parts, and constantly lubricate them withoutwaste.
Holes may be made in the top and bottom of the box for the introduction and removal of the oil, .and plugged or otherwise stopped, as may be desired.
According to another plan of arrangement for tightening the box, to compensate for wear, a second tubular extension, H, from the bottom, may be provided, of larger internal diameter at the top than at the bottom, and the journal-bearings E may be tapered to fit the same, and may be adjusted on the shaft in a down.- ward direction, to take up any looseness ocoasioned by wear.
Holes I may be made through the bottom of the part H, to allow the oil to communicate with the bearing-surfaces.
If it be desired to employ this improved bearing for strips, the lower end of the journal-bearing E may rest and turn on the bottom of the box A.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The box A, journal-bearing E, segmental bearings F, and shaft,'all combined and arranged substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The box A, provided with the fixed bearing H and' Vertical tubular extension D, the tapered adjustable journal-bearing E,` and shaft, all combined and arranged substantially as and for the purpose specified.
