Description

E. H. N. CLARK-SON.
JOURNAL-BOX.
Patented Nov. 28,1876.
ll i --w| NESS Es=- UNITED STATES EDWARD H. N. GLARKSON, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
IMPROVEMENT m JOURNAL-BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 184,839, dated November 28, 1876; application filed May 31, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD H. N .OLARK- SON, of the city of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain Improvements in Journal-Boxes, of which the following is a specification and I do hereby declare that in the same is contained a full, clear, and exact description of my said invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates to that class of journal-boxes in which the caps are provided with tallow or oil boxes, and the bearings forming a part thereof fitted with adjustable blocks, which, as the bearings on the bed and cap are worn, may be brought into contact with the journal to prevent vertical or lateral movement of the same while in revolution, as hereinafter fully described.
In the description of my invention which follows, duerefereuce must be had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a horizontal view, partly in section, of my improved journal-box; Fig. 2, a transverse section of the same, and Fig. 3 a plan of the invention.
Similar letters of reference indicate similar parts in all the figures.
A is the lower part or bed of the journalbox, and B the upper part or cap of the same, secured to the bed by means of bolts. The bed A is, in its entire length, a bearing for the journal, while the cap only comes into contact with the same at its ends, the central portion being out out to form an oil-box, C, which is covered with a lid, a. D D are the adjustable blocks, which, when the boxes are first fitted up, correspond in curvature with the cap B. E E are set-screws, extending through the caps to the adjustable blocks D, for the purpose of setting the blocks to the journal when the bed and cap shall have become worn. F F are tap-bolts in the sides of the cap to hold the block D after their adjustment by means of the set-screws E.
Supposing the journal-box to be worn and a space to exist between the journal and the cap, as is shown in Fig. 2, the manner of adjusting the box is by turning the set-screws E until the blocks D are brought into contact with the journal. By this means a very nice adjustment of the bearings is obtained without any actual pressure being placed upon the journal. The blocks, when adjusted, are secured by means of the tap-bolts F.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and wish to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
In a journal-box, the bed A, cap B, and adjustable blocks D, in combination with the set-screws E and tap-bolts F, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name this lOth day of May, in the year of ourLord A. D. 1876.
