SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 777,519, dated December 13, 1904.
Application filed July 17, 1903. Serial 110,166,023. (No model.)
. To al?, whom 711/14/ con/cern,.-
.Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. Lun, a resident oi' Blackwell, in the county ot' Kay and Territory of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Disk-Bearings; and 1 do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description oi the invention, such will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improved diskbearing, the object of the inventionbeing to provide an improved journal-bearing adapted to support a disk at cach end and which will be self-lubricating and dust-prooi' and capable et' various adjustments to locate the disks in any position desired; and with this object in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
1n the accompanying' drawings, Figure i is a view in vertical longitudinal section, illus- Fig. 2 is a view in section, taken at right angles to Fig. 1. Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are views illustrating the parts detached, and Fig. 6 is a view illustrating a modification.
1 1 represent bars secured to and carried by any desired form of frame, and to the forward end ot' said bars my improved journal-bearing box is secured, as will now be described. The bars 1 1 are secured to the opposite sides of an upright web Q on a plate or casting 3, which latter is secured upon a fiat extension 4 on journal-bearing box 5, and said plate 3 and extension 4 are made with elongated slots 6 for the passage ot' bolts 7 to secure them together, but permit oil adjustment to locate the box at any angle desired.
The journal-box 5 has integral sand-bands 8 at both ends and is adapted to receive a hollow cylindrical journal 9, which projects at both ends beyond the box and is externally and internally screw-tl'lreaded at both ends, as shown. @n the external screw threads at both ends collars 10 are screwed and located and are made with annular grooves to receive the sand -bands 8 and exclude all dirt and grit from the bearing. The 'iilnrow-ojiening disks 11 are located on the journals against collars 10, and headed screws 12 are screwed into the ends oi journal 9, closing the same and e'llectually clampin the disks .il between the heads of screws 12 and collars 10. Upenings are provided in the journal 9 and box 5, through which lubricant can be supplied to the journal and fed thereby to the bearing, and, i l desired, the journal can be lilled with waste to more etilectually hold and feed the lubricant.
ln Fig. (i l. show a modilied construction o't' my improvements in which I dispense with the internal screw-threads at the ends oi the journal and extend the latter through the disks, screwing cap-nuts 13 onto the ends el the journal and clamping the disks between the nuts and collars 10.
Various other slight changes might be made in the general iorni and ariL ngement of the parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not restrict myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such slight changes and alterations as fairly iall within the spirit and scope oit' my invention.
Having l'ully described my invention, what 1 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- l 1. 1n a disk-bearing, the combination with a hollow journal having lubricant-holes, o't' a journal-box shorter than said journal and having a lubricant-hole, screws entering the respective ends of said journal, and collars secured to the ends of the journal-box, said collars and screwsserving as clamping means ilor disks.
2. In a disk-bearing, the combination with a journal having' external and internal threads at both ends, of a journal-box shorter than Ythe 'onrnah screws entering the ends oi" the journal, and collars screwed onthe ends oil the journal beyond the ends ei the journal-box, said collars and screws serving as means i'or clamping disks to the journal.
3. ln a disk-bearing', the combination with a journal having external and internal threads In testimony whereof I have signed this speeication in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
