BENJAMIN J. KNAPP, OI ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 639,250, dated December 19, 1899. Application filed March 21,1899. Serial No. '709,875. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN J. KNAPP, of St. Paul, Ramsey county, Minnesota, have invented certain Improvements in Lubricating J ournal-Bearings, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in journal-bearings; and it consists in the construction hereinafter particularly described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a crosssection of a journal-box, showing my improved bearing; and Fig. 2 is a detail of my bearing.
In the drawings, A represents the journalboX,2 thejournal, and 3 the supporting framework. The journal-box is of ordinary construction, having the space below the journal for holding packing. (Not shown.) 4 represents the bearing-brass, which rests upon the upper portion of the journal.
My invention consists of transverse grooves 5, formed in the inner face of the bearingbrass 4. These grooves extend inward only a short distance from the side edges of the brass, leaving a central bearing-surface 6, which rests upon the top of the journal, as shown in Fig. 1. In use the oil passes from the packing (not shown) in the lower part of the journal-box through the grooves 5 and is carried by the journal in its revolution along said grooves and out of their inner ends to and upon the ungrooved central portion of the bearing, thus keeping the journal thoroughly lubricated. i
I clairn- A hearing of the class described, formed with transverse grooves in its bearing-face, said grooves extending only a short distance inward from each side of the bearing, leaving an ungrooved bearing-face between the two rows of grooves whereby the lubricant is fed to the ungrooved central portion of the bearing.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
BENJAMIN J. KNAPP.
