SETTING AND OPERATING DEVICE FOR FARE-REGISTERS.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN F. OHMER, a citizen ol' the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Setting and Operating Devices for Fare-l'tegisters; and I do Ldeclare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as vwill eneither of the registers, and second-the improvements relate to means ior concealing the sight opening or fare indication of the register which is not operated.
Those car lines which operate under a greater number of different values or denominations of fares than are usually employed on the average city or traction line, require a registering and recording machine of such an enlarged size, in order that it may have a capacity for taking care of such excessive number of fares, as to make its use practically prohibitive; for example, a road collecting fares running in values from 5c. fares up to and including $1.00 fares, necessarily require a machine of such enlarged proportions as to render it inconvenient in attaching same to car. Owing to these requirements and restrictions, one of the objects of the present invention is to provide two registers and recording machines of practical and approved sizes, to take care of the liares of such lines, and a single fare selecting and operating means which are common to both registers and recorders these machines may be located at various points of the car, and one of' such machines may be yemployed for registering, indicating and recording fares ol certain values, while the other machine is utilized for registering, indicating and recording fares of different values.
It may be further stated, that within the scope of the present invention, is contemplated the employment of two registering Specification of Letters Patent.

and recording machines each adapted to register and record a specific single fare denomination, both of such machines being operated fromA a single operating device or member, the actuation of which conceals the permanent fare indicator of one machine while the other permanent fare indicator is visually exposed.
The scope of' the present invention further contemplates the employment of suitable means which is actuated through the means for registering the fares, and whereby the fare exhibited at the machine previously operated, is concealed while the machine operated last exposes its fare indication.
The scope of the invention further contemplates means whereby one of the registers cannot'be operated, nor can its fare be set for operation while the other machine is in a condition for operation.
The scope of the invention further contemplates means for selecting the fare to be operated, also means for operating the selected fare from different points of the car, for example, in those cars which are provided with smoking and other apartments, the fares may be selected. in either machine and operated from such apartments as well as the general passenger apartment of the car.
Preceding a more detail description of the invention, reference is made to the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure 1, is an elevation of two registering and recording machines with the fare-selecting indicators located between them, this view of the drawings also illustrates the op.- erating devices, parts of which are removed, as well as the means for concealing the fares upon one or the other machine, while the fare is exposed on one or the other machine last operated. Fig. 1a is a front elevation similar to Fig. 1, with the fare-selecting indicators removed; the registering and recording machines shown in this view are each designed to register and record a single class of fares 5' hence, the fare-selecting indicators and cooperating devices are not employed. This rod 2 extends along the ulterior' side of the car and is rotatably supported. in a suitable manner and may be grasped by the hand olI the comluctor and given thc necessary turn to bring the pointer 3 thereon in line with the lare to be indicated upon the dial and. registered within the machine. lt will be seen that when the pointer 3 is moved to indicate a vlare shown in the outer concentric row ol'A '[igures, it will extend between two o'lE the Vl'are indications on the inner concentric line, and when said pointer is moved to indicate a lare shown in the inner concentric line olI figures, it will lie across the desired ligure and extend between two oli the 'lare indications in the outer concentric line ol igures, so that there may be no confusion in locating the pointer $3 or in rcading the indicating dial.
On the rear side olE the dial 1, there are two sprocket wheels 4 and 5 which rotate with the setting rod 2 by being 'ixed to said rod., these sprocket wheels 4 and 5 are inclosed within a sprocket box 6 upon which the dial is mounted. 'lhe sprocketwheels are mounted in a manner to bring the teeth of one out oli alinemcnt with the teeth ol' the other as shown in Fig. l) of the drawings in order that dill'erent movements may be imparted to the [fare-collectivc devices in the rear oll the registers. It will be seen Vl'rom the relative positions oli the sprocket wheels 4 and 5, that these carriages 12 will be given dill'crent movements when the selecting rod. 2 is rotated, and the movement ol one o1 said carriages will be to an inoperative position, while the movement o1E the other carriage will be to an operative position, so that the selected. lare only may be operated7 and the machine in which such. liare is not to be registered, in the meantilne is placed in such inoperative posi tion. 'l`he carriage 12 rides upon a horizontal track 1.3 which is mounted on the trame 11., which as bel'ore stated, lies in the rear ol" each machine, and it will be readily seen that when movement is imparted to the sprocket wheels 4 and 5, 'from the selecting rod 2, these carriages will be moved upon their guide supports 13 owing to their connection with the chains 7 and. S. Supported in each of the carriages 12, is a vertically-movable actuator 14 which constitutes another element of the fare-selective devices. This actuator, when the carriage 12 moves it to an operative position, is moved upwardly in its guiding support 12 by the transverse lifting bar 15 `which moves on end guides 16 attached to the frame 11; this movement of the actuator 14 is accomplished from the lifting bar 15 through a lug 17 which. projects from a side of the actuator into a horizontal slot 18 in the lifting bar, said slot extending the length of said lifting bar in order that the carriage with the actuator may be moved to any desired position to be placed in operative relation with the fare to be registered in the machine.
Projecting from the rear side of each of the actuators 14 is a lug 19 which, when either actuator is moved in an operative position on the carriage 12, lies between any two' of the locking bars 18 as shown in Fig. 5; these locking bars 18 are secured to the side or inner face of the frame 1 1, and their purpose is to serve as a lock to prevent the operation of each actuator when the latter is moved to a position below one of said bars 18 as is shown in Fig. 4 to the left, and also to guide the lug 19 when in an operative position, thereby locking the setting device and preventing movement thereof until the selected. fare has been registered and the actuator returned to normal position. To the right in this figure, the lug 19 is shown in a position between two of the bars 18 and in which position said actuator may be elevated by the lifting bar 15.
It will be understood that in selecting a fare to be registered in one or the other of the machines, the setting rod 2 is rotated to bring the pointer 3 to the desired position to indicate the fare to be registered; this movement of said rod correspondingly moves the carriages 12 as shown in Fig. 4, one of said. carriages being moved to an operative position in the rear of the register or machine to be operated, for example, as shown to the right in Fig. 4, and the other carriage being moved to an inoperative position in the rear of the register or machine which is not to be operated; this inoperative position is shown to the left in Fig. 4, where vthe projection 19 lies below one of the locking ribs or bars 18. It will be understood that this common movement by which one of said actuators 14 is moved to a position between the bars 18, and the other actuator is simultaneously moved in alinement with one of the bars 18, is accomplished by mounting the sprocket wheels 4 and 5 with the teeth of one wheel out of alinement -with those of the other wheel and as shown in Fig. 9. The carriage which is so moved. to an operative position and as shown in Figs. 2 and 4, is maintained in such position by a temporary locking roller 20 which rides recesses 21 in a track 22 fixed to a side of the carriage track 13. The locking roller 20 is on the end of a pin 23 which is mounted in the carriage frame and said roller is normally held down by a spiral spring 24 placed upon the pin. The actuator 14 which is moved to an operative position is elevated to register the selected fare in one or the other of the machines through an elevation of the lifting bar 15, the latter being actuated from a bell crank lever 25 which is connected to an. operating member 26, which in turn, is connected to an operating member 27 which extends into the car at suitable points to be operated. to register each fare after the selection of such fare. The connection between. the operating members 26 and 27 is in the form of a lever 28 which is fulcrumed on a bracket 29 extending from. a convenient .part of the car, and one arm of which connects with the member 26 and the other arm of which connects with the operating member 27.`
In the event it is desired to extend the operating member 27 in opposite directions, this may be done as shown in Fig. 8, where 30 designates the interior wall of a car which partitions said car into two compartments, one a smoking compartment and the other a general passenger compartment. In order to enable the conductor to select and register fares from either of these parts of the car, the selecting rod 2 is passed through the partition or wall 30 and an operating member 27 is likewise passed through such partition, and on each side of said partition, there is a dial 1 such as is shown in Fig. 1, and the selecting rod 2 is provided with two pointers 3.
In the use of two machines, either in proximity to each other as shown in Fig. 1, or more widely separated as shown in Fig. 7, it is essential that the sight opening in the machine last operated be closed, or that the fare last indicated in such machine be concealed when the next succeeding operation of the other machine takes place; this is necessary as a meansof directing the attention to the indication of each fare to. the machine in which such fare is registered. This result is accomplished by means of an arm 31 which is pivoted mid-way of its length and carries on each extreme end a depending arm 32 which supports a blind 33 which is adapted to move in and out of a position to conceal the sight openings C-C in either machine. When the blind is moved over the fare sight opening in one machine it is elevated above such opening in the other machine, and this movement is accomplished in each operation of one or the other register as follows: Depending from each end of the pivotal arm 31 is a rod 36 which extends down through a guide 34 in the frame 11 and is in a position to engage the ledge 35 which projects from a side of the lifting bar 15-see Figs. 2 and 5. It will be seen that when the lifting bar 15 of either machine is elevated, the depending trod. 36 will be engaged and the lever 3l will be tilted to elevate the blind 33 from the sight opening in the register operated, and the corresponding blind S3 will be lowered over the sight opening in the other n'lachine.
l do not wish to limit myself to the particular means herein shown and described for thus concealing the fare indication at one machine while exposing it at the other, as it is clear this may be done in a manner dill'erent from that shown and described herein; neither do l wish to limit myself to the application of the means to expose and disclose the fare indications only, as the same means may be employed to expose and disclose other features in the register, such as the trip or total passenger wheels, the direction imlicator, etc. Vl therefore, claim broadly means for use in connection with two fare registering machines whereby the fare indication and other exposed matter at one machine will be concealed simultaneously with the revealing of the fare indication at the other machine.
Referring to Fig. l o'f the drawings, the machines shown therein are eachadapted to register a single fare, such for example, as cash fares in one machine, and transfers or tickets in the other machine. lin such use of two registering machines, the fare-selective mechanism shown in Figs. l and 4 would be dispensed with as obvious, and the fare iinlications at each machine would be permanent, but the use and operati e n of the blinds 33 would be similar to their use and operation shown and described in connection with Fig. l.
Fig. ll) is a detailed view of the front elevation of Fig. l, and which shows the blind enlarged sul'liciently to conceal the total trip or passenger wheels, and also the direction indicator and the fare indication. lt will be observed that the trip or passenger wheels and also the. direction indicator are observed through apertures in the blind.
Single fare registers are sometimes used without permanent fare indications, and the purpose of this invention` would be subserved. by adaptil'ig the blind to expose the total wheels only, or the direction indication only, and to simultaneouslyT disclose those features on the other machine. lf it is desirable to expose the total wheels only, or the direction indication only, or both the total wheels and the direction indicator, the blind will be arranged accordingly.
Ve'ferring to Fig. 6, the arrangement and connection of the fare-selective devices there shown are adopted in cases where it is necessary to locate the two machines side by side; in this case a single sprocket chain 8 is employed and the two carriages l2 are connected to said chain at suitable points to enable thein to be moved the proper extent in the rear of their respective machines or registers. ln this application of my improvement, a single setting rod is employed and. also the dial l as shown in Fig. l, but it only necessary to employ a single lsprocket wheel 4l or 5 to drive the chain S, and these several elements, to-witthe rod 2, the dial 1 and the sprocket wheel may be locz'rted on one side of one of the registers instead of between the two registers as shown in Fig, l. 'lhe carriage.` areso connectml to the chain that only one of said carriage` at a time may be moved to operative positions or in line with the space between any two of the locking bars or ribs 1S.
Referring to Fig. 7, this illustrates a top view of a car in which two registers are located one at each end, and both of said registers being operated by the same means hereinbefore described and the fare selected. in one or the. other by the same mnms; for exzm'iple, the setting rod 2 extends the length of the car, and at each end thereof is arranged the fare-iinlicating dial l with the necessary connections as shown in Fig. l, with a single sprocket wheel 4 or 5 fixed to each end of said rod and the necessary chain connections between said sprocket wheels and the respective carriages l2.` An operating member 26 is likewise similarly connected to each of the lifting bars l5 in the rear of the machines.
Se ,far as Yl am aware, .l am the Yfirst to employ a plural number of fare-registering and recording machines in a car with means for selecting the fare to be registered in one or the other of such machines, said means being common to both machines, and further, means for locking the machine in which a 'fare is not collected for operation, and further, means for concealing the fari and ol her data exposed at the last machine operated concurrently with the exposing of the far(` at the machine next operatml, l. therefore, claim broadly these features; said last means being applicable to any type of register or any type of register or recorder combined.
l claim:
l. The combination. with two fare registering and riccording machines, and a separate casing inclosing each machine, of a single selective mechanism whereby the fare to be registered in either machine is selected, and means for actuating the mechanism of theselected fare in each machine.
2. The combination` with two fare registering and recording machines, and a separate casing inclosing each machine, of an actuating device for each machine, and selective means common to both registers or machines and whereby the fare to be registered in one or the other of said machines is selected.
3. Two fare registering and recording machines, a separate casing inclosing each machine, and actuating devices for cach register, of selective .n'iechanism adapted to be placed in operative relation with a fare to be registered in either machine, and a setting rod and a dial common toy both of said machines and through which the fare is selected and indicated for one or the other of said machines.
4. rl`wo fare registering and recording machines, a separate casing inclosing each machine, and an actuating device for each register, of a selective device for each register adapted to be placed in operative relation with the actuating device of each register and the selected lare to be registered in each register, a fare-selecting rod and indicator coniinon to the devices of both registers, and connections between said rod and the devices of each register whereby one of the registers is placed in an inoperative position while the fare is set in the other for operation.
5. Two tare registers adapted to register ditl'erent classes ot fares, a separate casing inclosing the mechanism of each register, of means for simultaneously concealing the fare last registered in one machine and exposing the indication of the fare to be next registered in the other machine.
6. In a fare register, the combination with two fare registers adapted to register dil-ferent classes of fares, and means for siinultaiieously concealing the fare last registered in one machine and exposing that registered in the next succeeding registration in the other machine, said means for so exposing simultaneously, one fare and concealing the other, being actuated during the operation of registering each fare.
7. The combination with a plurality of fare registering and recording machines, each one of said machines being designed to register different classes of fares, a single selective member by which a fare to be registered in either of said machines is placed in an operative position, an actuating member or device lor each of said registers and through which the collected fare may be registered, a dial common to both of said registers and upon which the fare selected in either register is indicated in the operation of selecting the fare to be registered.
8. The combination with a plurality of fare registering and recording machines, each one of said machines being designed to register different classes of fares, a single selective member by which a fare to be registered in either of said machines is placed in an operative position, an actuating device for each of said registers and through which the collected fare may be registered, a dial common to both of said registers and upon which the fare selected in either register is indicated in the operation of selecting, the fare to be registered, and means for simultaneously concealing the fare indicated at one register and exposing the fare at the other register.
9. Two fare registering and recording machines, each of which is coniined to registrations and indications of certain fares, separate casings inclosing said machines, and operating devices to register the fares in said machines, of means working in unison and adapted toconceal the fare indication at one chine, of means actuated bythe operating devices of one or the other machine for concealing the fare indication at one machine and exposing it at the other machine.

Two fare registering and recording machines, each of which is confined to the registration and indication'of certain specific fares, a separate casing inclosing the mechanism of each machine, operating devices for each machine, and common means for actuating the operating devices of both machines, of means actuated by said operating devices simultaneously with the registration of fares in either machine and whereby the fare indication is simultaneously concealed at one machine and exposed at the other. Two fare registering and recording machines, inclosed in separate casings, each of which is coniined to the registration and indication of a selected fare, operating devices for each machine, common means for actuating the devices of both machines, and means actuated by said operating devices simultaneously with the registration of fares in either machine and whereby the fare indication is simultaneously concealed at one machine and exposed at the other.
13. A plurality of fare registering and recording machines, one of which is adapted to register fares of different values from those of the other, fare selecting devices simultaneously movable into a position to operate a selected fare in one machine, and out of' an operative position with the other machine, an exterior rotatable member, intervening connections between the fare selecting devices of both machines and said rotatable member, whereby the fare selecting devices of one machine are moved into operative relation with a selected fare, and the fare selecting devices of the other machine are moved out of an operative relation with any fare.
14. Two fare registering and recording machines, one of which is adapted to register fares of different values from those registrable in the other machine, fare operating devices simultaneously movable into a posi- 1 tion to operate a selected fare in one machine, and out of an operative position with any fare not selected in the'other machine, a fare-setting member, intervening connections between the fare-operating devices of both machines and said fare-setting membenl whereby the fare-operating devices of one machine are moved into operative relation with the mechanism ol" a selected fare in one machine, and the fare-operating devices in the other machine are moved out of an operative relation with the mechanism of any fare registrable therein, and an indicator' showing the lares registrable in both machines.
15. Two tare registering and recording machines inclosed in separate easings, and each et which is coniined to registrations and indications of a speciiic denomination of fare, operating devices for each machine adapted to register the fares thereof, a permanent indicator Afor each machine, means adapted to concurrently conceal the fare indicated at one machine and to expose the tare indicated at the other machine, said means being actuated by the operating devices ol either machine.
16. Two vfare registering and recording machines inelosed in separate casings, each confined to a specific class ol" fares, a permanent indicator for each machine to exhibit the l'ares thereof, operating devices for each machine through which the fares of each machines are operated, means adapted to conceal the fare indication ol one machine and to expose that of the other machine simultaneously, said means being operated in one direction by the operating devices of one machine, and in an opposite direction by the operating devices ol" the other machine.
17. Two lare registering` and recording machines, each ol which is con lined to a specific lare, a permanent indicator to exhibit the fares registered in each machine, operating devices for registering the fares in each machine, and :means adapted to conceal the fare indication ol one machine and to expose that ol" the other machine simultaneously.

a separate inclosing case for each register, operating devices adapted to register the fares of each register, an arm supported between the registers, a depending member at each end or' the arm and arranged to be operated by said operating devices, and means carried on said arm for simultaneouslyT concealing the fare indicated at one register and exposing that at the other register.
29. The combination with two registers, a separate casing inclosing each register, of a single selective mechanism common to both registers and by means of which the fares to be registered in either machine may be selected, and means for actuating the mechanism of the fare selected in either machine.
30. In a fare register, the combination with two registering machines, an inclosing case for eachmachine, means for registering and indicating the vfares of each machine, of a single fare-selective mechanism common to both machines, indicators bearingl indications corresponding with the indications at the machine, and operating means adapted to register and indicate the fare selected in either machine.
31. The combination with two Afare registers, a separate inclosing case for each machine, a single selective mechanism extend.- ing to distant points Vfrom where the fare to be registered in either machine may be selected, a pluralityT of fare indicators located at different points, means actuated by the movement of the single-selective mechanism to indicate the same fare on each oi said 'fare indicators, and to correspond with the fare indication of one or the other register after the operation of such register.
32. The combination of a register, selective mechanism by means of which the mechanism of the Vfare to be registered is selected, and means for actuating the mechanism of a selected 'fare to register the same, said means comprising a multiple arm lever, -a connection between one arm of said lever and the register mechanism, and extended connections from the other arms of said lever and through which said lever is actuated.
33. The combination with a car having different compartments, of two registers placed therein in separate casings, a separate actuating mechanism for each register extending into the di'l'lerent compartments, and a selective mechanism common to both of the register mechanisms and` by means of which the fare to be registered in either machine is selected, said selective mechanism extending into the sevei'al compartments of the car.
34. Two fare registers inclosed in separate casings and each o i which is con'lined to register a specific fare, operating devices adapted to register such fares, an arm supported between the registers, a depending member on each end of said arm and arranged to be operated upon by th-e operating devices, and means carried on said arm vfor concurrently concealing the fare indicated at one register and exposing that at the other register.
' 35. Two registers each of which is confined to register a specific denomination of fare, visible indications at both registers, an arm supported between the registers, said arm having extensions loosely connected to the case of the registers, curtains connected to said extensions to conceal the visible indication at one register and expose it at the other.
36. Two fare registering and recording machines, each of which is confined to the registration and indication of different speciiic fares, a casing inclosing each machine, a
`permanent indicator common to both machines and adapted to indicate the fares registered in each machine, and operating devices for each machine, of means adapted to conceal the fare indicator of one machine and expose that of the other machine simultanen ously with the operation of registering a fare in one or the other machine.
