To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RUDOLF Bnown, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cuero, in the county of Dewitt and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Tmprovements in Passenger-Recorders, of which the following is a specification.
The primary purpose of this invention is the provision of a recorder for automatically auditing the number of passengers and the distance traveled by said passengers while en route on a train or other public conveyance.
The invention is of such a. nature as to admit of its adaptation for recording the number o-f'persons passing into or out from a given place, whether the same be a conveyance or a stationary apartment.
The invention contemplates a recording mechanism, actuating means for the recording mechanism to move the same forwardly or backwardly, means adapted to be operated by the person passing in or out of the conveyance or place of assemblage so as to add to or take from the total amount to be recorded, a time mechanism and operating means actuated at regular intervals by the time mechanism for actuating the recording mechanism whereby the record is made.
The invention consists of the novel features, details of construction and combination of parts, which hereinafter will be more particularly set forth, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings, forming a part of the specification, Figure 1 is a front view of the operating means located at the entrance or exit of the conveyance or other place to be positively actuated by the person passing in or out, showing the electric circuits whereby the recording mechanism is operated. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on the line of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail view, showing two pairs of contacts and the circuit closing means therefor, the parts being illustrated in normal position. Fig. 1 is a view of the parts shown in Fig. after the operating means has been moved in one direction. Fig. 5 is a view of the parts shown in Fig. 1 after the operating means have been moved to advance one of the arms and to admit of the other arm returning to normal position. Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description, and indicated in all the views of the drawings, by the same reference characters.
At the entrance of the conveyance or place to be occupied is located a mechanism to be positively actuated by each person upon en tering or leaving said place to insure an accurate record being made of the number of entries and exits. As shown two posts or uprights 1 are located upon opposite sides of the entrance. A plurality of arms 2, 3, and 1 are mounted upon the posts 1 to swing horizontally thereon in either direction, said arms being normally held extended across the passage way by means of springs 5, which latter yield to the movement of the arms and serve to return said arms to normal position after clearing the person passing through the entrance. The uppermost arms 2 serve simply to obstruct the entrance, whereas the arms 3 and a are utilized as means for effecting proper movement of the recording mechanism to indicate the number of persons passing into or out of the conveyance or place of assemblage.
The arms t. are of greater length than the arms 3 and extend past a central point and have their outer ends overlapped, as indicated most clearly in Fig. 1. The arms 3 support separators (3 which prevent more than one person at a time passing through the entrance. Each of the separators 6 is pivotally connected to the outer end of an arm 3 and is pivotally connected thereto so as to rotate about a vertical axis. Each separator comprises a plurality of points and depressions between adjacent points to admit of the passage of a person between the separators and the arms 3. The arms 2) have outer extensions 7 and the arms %i: have outer extensions 8. The extensions 7 and S are of equal length and normally aline vertically. When a person passes through the entrance the several arms 2-, 3 and i are moved in the same direction and when the person re: ches a given position the arms 2 instance is illustrated in connection with an electrically contr lled setting mechanism, the latter being included in electric circuits which are adapted to be closed by means of the devices controlling the entrance of the conveyance or other place. Four electric circuits are indicated, two by the numeral 9 and two by the numeral 10. An electromagnet 12 is included in the circuits 9 and an electro-magnet- 13 in the circuits 10. A pair of contacts 14 is had for each of the four electric circuits and these contacts consist of flat springs which are normally spaced apart. A circuit closer 15 is provided for each pair of electric contacts 14L- and consists of a bell crank. The bell crank circuit closers 15 are located upon opposite sides of the extensions 7 and 8 of the arms 3 and t to be operated thereby ac cording to the direction of movement of the arms to effect a positive movement of the recording mechanism either forwardly or backwardly according as the person enters or leaves the conveyance or place of assemblage. Figs. 2 and 3 show more clearly the relative position of the circuit closers 15 and pairs of spring contacts 1%. hen either one or both of the electric circuits 9 are closed by the person entering the conveyance or place of assemblage the electromagnet 12 is energized, with the result that the recording mechanism is advanced. But when either one or bot-h of the circuit closers of the circuits 10 is closed the electro-magnet 13 is energized, with the result that the recording mechanism is moved backward, thereby setting the mechanism to record a lesser number. Referring to Fig. 4: both arms 3 and 1 are moved forward at their outer ends thereby bringing their extensions 7 and S in contact with a member of a circuit closing bell crank, which latter is moved to the position about as indicated in said figure. In Fig. 5 the arm 1 is shown advanced and the arm 3 returned to normal position, as happens when the person moves forward to clear the arms 8 and still exerting a pressure upon the arms 4. As the arm 3 returns to normal position its extension 7 engages with the other member of the bell crank and moves the same into the position indicated in Fig. 5, thereby bringing the member of the circuit closing bell crank first engaged by the extensions 7 and 8 forward of the extension 8 of the arm 4, with the result that when the arm -11: clears the person and returns to normal position the circuit closing bell crank is moved into the position indicated in F 6, thereby closing the el ctric circuit. l i hen the arm 1- assumes its normal position the spring contacts regain the first position and return the circuit closing bell crank into the given position, which is about as indicated in 2 and The recording mechanism comprises a shaft 16 and type wheels 17, 18 and 19 mounted thereon, the type wheel 17 being fastened to the shaft 16 to rotate therewith. and type wheels 18 and 19 being loose on said shaft. 11 disk 20 is secured to the shaft 16 to rotate therewith and has a number of pins 21 projecting laterally therefrom. A ratchet wheel 22 is secured to the shaft 16 and a spring det-cnt 23 engages with the teeth thereof to hold the parts in proper position. shaft is arranged parallel with the shalt 16 and loosely supports gear wheels 25 and 26, the gear wheel 25 meshing with a gear wheel 27 rotatable with the shaft 16 and type wheel 17. The gear wheel 26 meshes with a gear wheel 28 rotatable with the type wheel 18. The hub of the gear wheel has a tooth 29, which is adapted to ei'igage one of a series of ten teeth of a gear wheel rotatable with the gear wheel 18 so to move the latter forward one number at each revolution of the type wheel 17. The hub of the gear wheel 26 has a tooth 31, which engages a tooth of a gear wheel 82 rotatable with the type wheel 19, said gear wheel 82 having ten teeth, thereby rotating the type wheel 19 one number at each complete revolution of the type wheel 18. The shaft 1.6 is retated forwardly as the persons enter the conveyance or place of assemblage to indicate the total number of entries. As each person leaves the conveyance or other place the shaft 16 is rotated backumrdly, thereby reducing the number. In the event of the invention being applied to a conveyance stopping at stated intervals the mechanism will record the number of persons carried between the stations, thereby making it possible to determine the approximate or average number of miles traveled by the pa.- sengers.
The recording mechanism may be positively actuated in any manner, but it preferred to employ two spring motors each being a duplicate of the other and indicated at A. Each spring motor has a spur wheel B, which is connected with the motor sprii'ig by means of a train of gearing including an escapement. The GS' HPCIHOHt is operated by the electro-magnet, thereby permitting the spur wheel to move one tooth to operate the shaft 16 in the proper direction a dis tance to bring the next number of the recording mechanism in proper position to record the total number at the next operation of the recording mechanism. hen the electro-magnet 12 is energized the escapement of the motor arranged to move the recording mechanism forwardly is released, thereby permitting the spur wheel B to move the distance of one tooth. When the electromagnet 13 is energized the escapement of the other motor is released, thereby admitting of the spur wheel moving one tooth to turn therecording mechanism backward one number.
An inking ribbon 33 extends from the type wheels 17, 18 and 19 and passes between pairs of rollers 34 and is wound upon a roller 35 and is adapted to be unwound therefrom and intermittently wound upon a roller 36, which is operated by means of a ratchet mechanism including a ratchet wheel 37 and pawl 38, the latter being pivotally connected to a lever 39. A ribbon, fillet, or strip of paper 40' is adapted to receive the record and passes over the inking ribbon and between the pairs of rollers 34 and is unwound from a reel or spool 41 and wound upon a spool 42, which latter is operated by means of a ratchet mechanism comprising a ratchet wheel 43 and pawl 44, which latter is pivoted to a lever 45, which in turn has connection by means of a link with the lever 89. The inking ribbon and record receiving strip 40 are normally held clear of the type Wheels.
A platen roller 46 is carried by means of a pivoted arm 47 and is adapted to be moved vertically by means of a time movement C of any make or design. A link 48 has connection with the arm 47 and wit a member of the lever 39. The link 48 is connected with a rod 49, which is adapted to be moved vertically at stated intervals by the time mechanism. The rod 49 is moved upwardly, thereby elevating the platen roller46,
said arm being suddenly released to admit of the platen roller descending quickly, thereby bringing the inking ribbon and strip 40 in cont-act with the type of the printing wheels to receive an impression. The rod 49 may be operated at stated intervals of live minutes or any other period of time for which the time mechanism may be constructed and set. As indicated most clearly in Fig. 7 a toothed wheel 50 has connection with the minute hand so as to rotate therewith, said wheel 50 having twelve teeth. An arm 51 engages with a tooth of the wheel 50 and is actuated every five minutes, thereby releasing the train of gearing of the time mechanism corresponding to the usual striking movement, with the result that the wheel 51 is caused to make a complete revolution and a pin 52 projecting laterally therefrom engages an extension 53 of the rod 49 and moves the latter upwardly, thereby lifting the platen roller 46 in the manner stated. The rod 49 has a notch 54 which may be engaged with a portion 55 of the frame of the movement to hold said rod elevated when it is not required to have the recording mechanism operate.

The controlling means, such as the arms 3 and 4, are located to extend across the opening through which the persons are compelled to pass when entering or leaving the place to be equipped with the invention to indicate the number of entries and departures. hen the invention is applied to a train a record of the number of persons and the approximate mileage may be kept, thereby automatically auditing the number of passengers on any trip and between given stations. hen a person passes from one coach to another of a train the number is varied, that of the coach containing the person being increased and the number of the coach from which the person departed being decreased, as will be readily understood.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the advantages of the construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, and while I have described the principle of operation of the invention, together with the device which I now consider to be the embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative, and that such changes may be made when desired as are within the scope of the claims appended hereto.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new, is
1. In combination a recording mechanism, operating means therefor, and controlling means for actuating said operating means adapted to be set in motion by the person passing through a given entrance, said controlling means consisting of swinging arms of different lengths, the shorter one of the arms clearing the person first and serving to set the operating means which are actuated subsequently by the longer arm when released from the person.
2. In combination a recording mechanism, operating means therefor, and controlling means for said operating means, the same consisting of oppositely disposed spring actuated arms, and spacers pivotally connected to the extremities of the arms each consisting of a body having points and provided with recesses between adjacent points.
3. In combination a recording mechanism, operating means therefor, controlling means for said opera ing means comprising two sets of independently mounted arms adapted to swing horizontally in either direction, said arms being of different lengths, the longer arms having their end. portions overlapping, and rotary spacing devices mounted upon the ends of the shorter arms to prevent more than one person passing through the opening obstructed by said arms at a time.
l, In combination a recording mechanism, a motor therefor comprising an escapement, an electric controlling device for releasing the escapement included in an electric circuit provided with movable contacts, a bell crank circuit closer, swinging arms adapted to be operated by the person passing through a given entrance, said swinging arms being of difierent lengths and both arranged to move the circuit closer and the shorter arm when released returning the circuit closer and properly positioning the same to be subsequently operated by the longer one of the arms when released to close the electric circuit through the said contacts.

In combination a recording mechanism, operating means therefor embodying an escapement, an electric controlling device for operating" the escapement included in an electric circuit, spring contacts constituting terminals of said electric circuit, a bell crank circuit closer, and arms of different lengths adapted to be operated by a person passing through a given entrance, said arms having extensions to engage with and operate the said circuit closing bell crank.

In combination a recording mechanism, operating means for moving the recording mechanism forwardly, another operating means for moving the recording mechanism operate one or the other according as the arm is swung inwardly or outwardly from given position, substantially as and for the purpose specified,
7. In combination a recording mechanism,
two operating means therefor, the one for advancing and the other for reversing the recording mechanism, each of the operating means embodying an escapement, an electrically operated device for releasing the escapement of each recorder operating means,
the same included in an electric circuit, two pairs of electric contacts one for each of the electric circuits, two circuit closing devices, and a swinging arm adapted to operate one or the other of the circuit closers to effect a forward or a rearward movement of the recording mechanism.
