To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DAVID B. WHISTLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Operating Mechanism for Fare Registers and Recorders, of which the following is a specification, refer ence being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to operating mechanism for fare registers and recorders, and more particularly to operating mechanism for devices ofthat class wherein the register is set to the particular fare to be registered by means of a rotating shaft, the actual registering or actuation of the registering mech anism being accomplished by a reciprocating or oscillating part after the register is set. Machines of this type are illustrated, for instance, in an application filed by Wilfred I. 1904, Serial No. 238,346, and in an application filed by said Wilfred I. Ohmer j ointly with Albert J. Kirchner and John IV. Hill, December 16, 1905, Serial No. 292,068, both of which applications are assigned to The Recording and Computing Machines Company, the assignee of the present application. In these machines, which are adapted for use on interurban lines, provision is made for dealing with a large number of different specific fares, the last-mentioned application dealing, for instance, with twenty-four different specific fares.
It is the object of the present invention to provide a simple and compact mechanism which will take up a relatively small space in the car-body in which it is mounted and which shall not only serve to set and actuate the register, but also to indicate at different points in the car the particular fare which the machine is set to register, so that both the conductor and passengers may readily know the fact.
To this end my invention consists in certain novel features which I will now proceed to describe, and will then particularly point out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a mechanism embodying my invention in one form. Fig. 2 is an enlarged elevation of one section of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view taken on the line a; :r of Fig. 1 and looking in the directionof the arrows. Fig. 4 is a similar view taken on the line 1 y of Fig. 1 and looking in t'he direction of the arrows, and F 1g. 5 is a front elevation of the device as shown in Fig. 1
In the said drawings, 1 indicates the side wall of the car-body, to the inner faceof which are secured, at each end thereof,'b'rack ets 2, in which is mounted a shaft 3, which is connected with the setting-shaft ofthe register by means of any suitable gearing, so that rotation of said shaft 3 will set the register'to any desired fare. The shaft 3 is provided'at suitable intervals with hand-grasps 4', of any suitable construction, by means of which said shaft may be readily rotated. Near each of its ends the shaft 3 is provided with a bevel-gear 5, located adjacent to the bracket 2, and each bevel-gear 5 meshes with a bevelgear 6, secured on a shaft 7, which is mounted in an arm 8 of the adjacent bracket 2." Each shaft 7 has secured to it a winding wheel or drum 9, to which is secured one end of a flexi ble connection 10, forming part of the indicator. Said flexible connection may be of any suitable description, such as a cord, rope, wire, chain, or the like. The winding wheels or drums are preferably spirally grooved, as indicated at 11., to cause these flexible-connections to wind and unwind properly when the apparatus is in use.
The shaft 3 is supported at various intermediate points between the brackets 2 by means of intermediate brackets 12, secured to the wall 1, and these intermediate brackets are apertured for the passage of an index bar or red 13, to the ends of which the other ends of the flexible connections 10 are secured in any suitable manner. The indexbar carries at suitable intervals indices or pointers 14, which are secured thereon, preferably between each pair of intermediate brackets 12, and said pair of intermediate brackets support between them an indicating-scale 15, subdivided into equal spaces, on which the various fare denominations are shown in any suitable manner. The index bar is located behind the indicating-scales 15, and the index or pointer for each scale ex- L tends forward under the lower edge of the scale and then upward on the face of the same a distance sufficient to be plainly vlsible 1n connection therewith. As the apparatus is generally arranged at a considerable height in the car, the indicating-scales are inclined,
' as shown so that their indicatin -faces will 7 D 1 said wheels in opposite directions, so that when said wheels are thus rotated the flexible connection at one end will be wound upon its wheel, while the flexible connect-ion at the other end will be unwound from or paid out by its wheel to a corresponding extent, so that the index-bar is moved in one direction or the other, according to the direction in which the shaft 3 is turned and to an extent proportionate to the extent of angular movement of said shaft. The parts of the operating mechanism are so proportioned and adjusted relatively to those of the register that the pointers 14 will always be located oppo site those particular divisions of the indicating-scales which show the fare denomination corresponding to the fare for which the register is set, so that such fare will be prominently indicated at different points in the car, and

Incidentally it may be noted that the register is provided with a suitable detent mechanism for holding the setting mechanism in proper position for each fare, and this detent mechanism enables the conductor to determine when the setting mechanism is in proper position by the varying resistance offered to the rotation of the shaft 3.
The operation of the register may be effected by means of an operating rope or cord 16, connected to the actuator of the register and passing through apertured supporting and guiding lugs 17, carried by the brackets 2 and 12.
It will be noted that the mechanism is simple and ellicient and at the same time very compact, taking up but little wall-space on connection with the setting mechanism of a register, winding wheels or drums driven from said shaft, and an indicator extending substantially parallel to said shaft and comprising flexible end portions wound on said wheels or drums, and an intermediate portion provided with an index or pointer, and an indicating-scale cooperating with said index or pointer, substantially as described.
2. An operating mechanism for fare-registers comprising a rotatable shaft adapted for connection with the setting mechanism of a register, winding wheels or drums driven from said shaft, and an indicator extending substantially parallel to said shaft and comprising flexible end portions wound on said wheels or drums, and anintermediate portion provided with a plurality of indices or pointers, and a corresponding plurality of indicating-scales cooperating with said indices or pointers, substantially as described.
3. An operating mechanism for fareregis ters comprising a rotatable shaft adapted for connection with the setting mechanism of a register, winding wheels or drums driven from said shaft, and an indicator extending substantially parallel to said shaft and comprising flexible end portions wound on said wheels or drums, and an intermediate indexbar provided with an index or pointer, means for supporting and guiding said indexbar, and an indicating-scale cooperating with said index or pointer, substantially as described.
4. An operating mechanism for fare-registers comprising a rotatable shaft adapted for connection with the setting mechanism of a register, winding wheels or drums driven from said shaft, and an indicator extending substantially parallel to said shaft and comprising flexible end port-ions wound on said wheels or drums, and an intermediate indexbar provided with a plurality'of indices or pointers, a corresponding plurality of indicating-scales cooperating with said indices or pointers, and brackets supporting and guiding said indexbar, and carrying the indicating-scales, substantially as described.
5.
