TELEPHONE-SUPPORT.
. Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 11 1908.
Application filed May 10, 1907. Serial No. 372,991.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. AUNosT, of Alliance, in the county of'St ark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Telepl1one-Supports; and I do hereby declare the following tube a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others'skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use thesame.
7 My invention relates to animprovement in desk attachments for supporting portable telephones, theobject being to'proyide a support capableof being elevated or lowered, moved towardor away from the-supporting standard, or turned to the side, thus enabling the telephone transmitter to be moved to and positively held in any position within the range of various adjustments of the holder.
Mv .invention consists in the'parts and combinations of parts as will be more fully described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in elevation of my improvement, the sections of the bracket being shown closed up in full lines and distended in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a view in section through same, and Fig. 3 is anenlargedview showing the sliding and clamping connection between the upright standard and the bracket.
1 represents ametal rod or standard, secured at its lower end to a suitable base 2, which in the present instance, is a clamp having a thumb screw 3 for its movable at.-
tachment to the ed e of a desk the standard h 7 1 being secured in the socket 4 at the upper end of the clamp by the screw 5.
The standard 1 may be angular or cylindrical in shape and of a length Sufiicient to permit. of all reasonable and necessary vertical movement of the bracket carrying the-telephone transmitter. This horizontal bracket is made in sections, preferably-four, the inner end one 6 of which is provided near its rear end with a vertical opening 7 of a size slightly greater than the cross section of the standard so as to permit. of the free vertical movement of the bracket on the stamiard, and at the same time, act as a clamp for sustainin the bracket in any horizontal ad-- justment. at which it may be placed on the standard.
As the opening through the section 6 is but slightly greater than the diameter of the standard, it will be seen that the weight. of
the bracket falls on the rear u per edge and the front lower edge of the wall of the opening 7, which edges biting against the standard, act as a clamp and sustain the bracket -in position against accidental displacement-.
The greater the weight on the bracket, the greater the clamping action, hence in order to adjust the bracketvertically it is simply necessary to grasp the bracket and lift same sufficiently to take the weight elf the clamping edges of the wall of the opening through section 6 of the bracket, which leaves the latter free to be elevated or lowered, and when the bracket is released its clamping edges; will hold it in the position to which it has been adjusted.
In the present instance I have shown the rear .end of the section 6 closed bv a solid block the latter having the opening 7 for the standard 1, but it is evident that the opening may be directly through the tube constituting section 6 of the bracket. This bracket is made up of a series of telescopic sections 6, 8, 9 and 9 made of metal, the sections 6, 8 and 9 being tubes and the other either of tubing or solid metal. Each section 8 and 9. is provided with a longitudinal groove 10 closed at its inner end, and engaged by stops 1 1 carried respectively by the sections 6 and 8, the stop 11 in section 6 engaging the groove in section 8 and the stop 11 carried by section 8 engaging the groove in section 9. Tliese stops and grooves prevent any rotary movements of the sections and limit their outward movements. The outer section 9 of this extensible bracket is slotted to receive. a pin carried by section 9 and is bent downwardly, rearwardly and outwardly forming the foot 12 on which the telephonetransmitter rests. cured to the foot 12 is the Y-shaped clamp, having two toes 13 adapted to overlap or engage the base of the transmitter at two points; the latter being engaged at a third point by the rearwardly bent portion of the section 9 of the bracket. The stem 14 of the clamp is provided with an elongated slot having its upper walls beveled to receive the beveled head 15 at one end of a screw 16 passing through the 'foot 12. A wingnut 17 is screwed on the lower end of the screw 16 and engages the under face of the foot 12. By this arrangement the clamping toes 13 may be adusted to suit bases of different. sizes and clamp them securely to the bracket. With a bracket thus constructed a telephone transmitter may be supported at any convenient height to suit the user, and the bracket may be manipulated to carry the transmitter out of the way, or bring it into any position most convenient for the user.
While I have described the improvement as a support for a telephone, it is clearly evident that the bracket may support a tray or tool rack or an electric lam and when the standard 1 is made cylindrical in cross-section, as shown inFig. 1, the bracket can be rotated or turned thereon so as to carry the tele hone, tray, etc., out of the way;
aving fullyzdescribed my invention what I claim as new and desire'to secure by Letters-Patent, is,
1. A desk attachment for supporting a portable telephone, com risin a standard,
support a telephone, whereby means for sustaining sai stan ard in an ulpright position, a bracket movable on t e standard and provided near one end with a hole for the accommodation of the standard' said hole having sli htly greater diameter than the diameter of t e standard, and means at the free end of said bracket to receive and the weight upon the free end of said bracket will slightly amass "passage- 0 said standard and the free end of the other end section terminating in a foot, and clamping means on said foot for clamping a telephone to said foot.
3. The combination with a standard, of
a horizontal bracket vertically adjustable thereon, and made u of telescopic sections,
means for limiting t e movements of said sections, a telephone'su ort carried by the outer end section of said hracket, and means for clamping the telephone in said support.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribmg witnesses.
