MITER-GAGE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. HEINRICH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lexington, in the county of Fayette and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Miter- Gages, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in miter gages. One of its objects is to provide a miter gage having two ad'ustable arms so arranged as to be free from link or other projecting mechanism, which would be in the way in measuring angles either between the adjustable arms or between either adjustable arm and the base or main frame.
Another object is to provide a miter gage in which three different angles may be secured at one adjustment.
Another object is to provide improved and accurate means for mounting and engaging the adjustable arms to cause the arms to move simultaneously, and improved means for clamping the adjustable arms in their adjusted positions.
Another object is to provide an improved compact arrangement of parts whereby the adjustable arms may be completely housed and protected when not in use.
Another object is to combine with a miter gage an adjustable spirit level.
It further consists in certain details of form, combination, and arrangement, all of which will be more fully set forth in the description of the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the preferred form of my improved gage with the arms open to a right angle. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same with the arms housed. Fig. 3 is a section on line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a section on line 44 of Fig. 1 with the armshoused. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the arms of Fig. 1 detached. Fig. 6 is a side elevation, with the arms extended, partly in section, showing a modification. Fig. 7 is a side elevation of Fig. 6 with the arms housed. Fig. 8 is a perspective view of one of the arms of Fig. 6 detached. Fig. 9 is.a view similar to Fig. 1 showing a modification.
In the accompanying drawings, Figs. 1 to 5, A represents the main frame, handle, or base of the tool, which for lightness is preferably constructed of wood. If constructed from a single piece of wood, it is recessed Specification of Letters Patent.

through one end and the middle portion to receive and house the adjustable arms and operative parts. If constructed of two pieces they are recessed on their meeting faces to receive the arms and operative parts, and are riveted together by rivets at S.
B B represent the adjustable arms, which are ivoted upon bolts or pins 1) b at one end of t 1e frame A. As shown the bolts are provided with counter-sunk heads 5 square shanks b and counter-sunk nuts I). The inner ends of arms B B are provided with either circular or segmental 'ears C C, preferably secured to one side of the arms B B by rivets c. The teeth of the gears mesh with each other so that the movement of one of the arms will cause the other or opposite arm to move in the opposite direction to an extent dependin upon the relative diameters of the gears. The arms B B are in different planes and their inner ends 12 are-preferably arranged to overlap the faces of the gears so as to assist in holding the parts firmly in place when clamped.
D represents a clamping bolt having a counter-sunk head and a nut d by means of which the front and back portions 1) b of the upper end of the frame A may be drawn together to clamp the gears and arms B B to any adjusted position.
I) represent recesses for the passage of bolt D when the arms are housed within recesses a a of the frame A as indicated in Fig. 4 and in dotted line in Fig. 1.
1) represents a scale on arm B by means of which the arms may be set to varying angles relative to frame A.
.A metal ring E, V-shaped or concave in cross-section, is seated in a recess in the face of frame A. Within the ring E is a split ring F which carries a spirit level G. The ring F is provided with a scale f and is adjustable to varying angles, and may be locked to varying angles by means of a tapered screw f which spreads the meeting edges of ring F to lock it within ring E.
In the modification Figs. 6 to 8 the arms B B are somewhat thicker than those of Fig. 1, and have segmental gears 6 b out upon their inner edges, which gears lie in the same plane in a recess 1) in the frame A, being locked to their adjusted position by clamping the front and back portions of frame upon opposite sides of arms B B by means of bolt b and nut I). It will be noted that by pressing the two arms to the work they are self-adjusting, thus being more convenient and saving time.
In the modification Fig. 9 the gears m m carried by the arms 13* B are of different diameters, thus causing a difference in ratio of movement in the respective arms. This arrangement permits of measuring three different angles with one adjustment of the arms, one between the edges h h, another between the edges 72, h and a still different one between-edges h h". As shown in Figs. 1 and 6 the angles between the edges h h are the same as the angle between the edges 7L2 72. In either form measurements may be conveniently made between any two edges mentioned Without interference of projecting parts at any point.
When not in use the adjustable arms are completely housed Within the frame and are not liable to injury. (1 represents a notch by means of which the end of arm B may be grasped to draw the arms out of the housing.
The device herein shown and described is capable of considerable modification without departing from the principle of my invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim is:
1. In a device of the character indicated, a frame, recessed at one end and through its middle portion to receive the adjustable arms, and to form a shoulder on each side of the arms to engage the work, a pair of adjustable arms separately pivoted to one end of said frame, and adapted to be housed in the recesses of said frame, gears in mesh with each other carried by said respective arms, to transmit motion from one of said arms to the other, and means for locking said arms in their adjusted positions by clamping the opposite sides of said frame upon both of said arms.
2. In a device of the character indicated, a frame recessed to receive the adjustable arms and operative parts, a pair of, adjustable arms separately pivoted to one end of said frame, gears of different diameter in mesh with each other and carried by said respective arms, to transmit motion from one of said arms to the other, and means for locking said arms in their adjusted positions.
3. Ina device of the character indicated, a frame recessed to receive the adjustable arms and operative parts, a pair of adjustable arms separately pivoted to one end of said frame, gears in mesh with each other carried by said respective arms, the inner ends of said arms overlapping the gear carried by the opposite arm, and means for clamping said arms and. gears between the front and back of said frame.
4. In a device of the character indicated, a frame recessed to receive the adjustable arms and operative parts, a pair of adjustable arms located in different planes, gears carried by and at the side of said respective arms, said gears being in mesh with each other, and means for clamping said arms in their adjusted position.
5. In a device of the character indicated, a frame recessed at' one end and through its middle portion to receive the adjustable arms, and to form a shoulder on each side of the arms to engage the work, a pair of adjustable arms separately pivoted to one end of said frame, and adapted to be housed in the recesses of said frame, gears in mesh with each other carried by said respective arms to transmit motion from one of said arms to the other, and a bolt passing through the free ends of the sides of said frame in rear of the arm pivots to clamp the free ends of said frame upon the inner ends of both of said arms to lock the arms to their adjusted positions.
