siding at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Telephone-Directories, of which the following is a specification, reference being, had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to telephone directories, and more particularly to what may be termed an emergency directory ada ted to be secured to, or adjacent to, a telep ione, and containing the names of persons or )laces to be called in case of emergency, togetlher with their telephone numbers without taking time to look up the numbers in the usua directory. Il'h'en, for example, it is desired to call the lire or police departments, a physician, an ambulance, or the like, haste is desirable, and the present invention aims to provide means whereby such emergency telephone calls ma y be promptly made without the delay incident to handling the ordinary bulky telephone directory boo The invention comprises a simple and inexpensive plate, preferably of light sheet metal,

ormed with parallel slots 'and bearing the names of persons or places to be called (preferably stamped in the metal) above said slots, a card bearing the telephone numbers of such persons or places, in such position as to expose them through said slots and means for retaining the cards in )lace and for securing the plate against a'wall or other c0nvenicnt support.

The construction ofthe invention will be more specifically described hereinafter, in connection with the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this specification, and its novel features will be defined in the ap pended claims.

In the drawing, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a telephone directory constructed in accordance with my invention, Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line x-z oirFig. 1, Fig. 4 is an elevation of the number cam detached from the plate, Fig. 5 is a view in perspective ofthe upper portion of a modified construction of the device, and Fig. 6 is a detail pers nective showing the inner side of the lower en of the plate.

The ends 4 are eachwpreferably formed with a central opening 8\to receive tacks or screws to secure the plate to a wall or to the telephone board or box.

One longitudinal edge of the plate is benut rearward to provide a liange 9 against which one edge of a card 10 rests, the opposite edge 11 of the plate being straight to permit the 'card to be readily slipped behind it to upon the lowercleat 7 and the flange 9.

The card bears telephone numbers so spaced a art that when the card is placed behind t e plate the number will show through the slots 2 and be readable in cemnection with the names or designations stamped on the plate immediately above the slots.

In Fig. 5, I have shown a modification 'of the device in which both longitudinal edges i of the plate are bent rearward forming arallel flanges 12 to hold the longitudinal ges of the card, and the upper enrportion of the plate is cut away to provide integral arms I3 connecting the top 14 to the body of the plate, said arms being bentrearward to a.

lha-t I claim is A device of the character described consisting of a unitary body portion formed of a vertically-extending elongated rectangular plate formed with a lurality of transverselyextending elongate rectangular slots suitably spaced apart and with that portion of the plate arranged above cach slot provided with an inscription, each inscription being different, each of said slots of the same area and of a length substantially equal to the width of the front of the body portion, said plate at a point slightly removed from the vertical edges of said slots and at each side thereof bent rearwardly to forni rounded side walls havin@r verticallyextending edges adapted to irectly abut against a support thereby roviding between the body of the late an( the support a space a card bearing mscriptions for exposure through said slots, the inscriptions upon the plate associating with the inscriptions on the card, said plate further .having its lower portion bent rearwardly at an inclination to form a lower wall for said space, and then downwardly in a vertical direction to constitute a flange of greater length than the width of the body portion, the inner face of said flange adapted to bear directly against the support, said lits ends and provided at its center withan opening through which is adapted to extend a hold-fast device for securing the lower end ofthe body portion to the support, said plate further having the upper portion thereof bent at right angles with respect thereto thereby forming an upper wall for said chainber, said angularly-bent portion at the up )er end of the plate terminating in a vertical yextending portion forming thereby a flange adapted to bei r directly against the support and of greater length than the width of the body portion, said` upper flange of greater width at its center than at its end and provided at its center with anopening through which is adapted to extend a hold-fast device for securing the upper portion of the plate to 'the support, said top wall being cut away to provide an elongated rectangular slot positioned at right angles with respect to the slots in the body portion7 and of a lenvth slightly greater than the length of each stlot in the body portion, saidslot in said top wall allowing for the positioning in said space of said card.
