' W/TNESSES CAR.
To all uhom. 'Zt may concern.'v
Be it known that I, BENJAAUN'FRANKLIN B-Rmmennr, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Mount Hope, in the county of Fayette and State of W'est Virginia., have made certain new and useful Improvements in Cars, of which the following is a specification. A
)Iy invention is an improvement Ain ears and consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts hereinafter de'- scribed and claimed.
Referring to the drawings forming a part hereof-Figure 1 is a side view of the car in its normal position. Fig. 2 is a similar view in dumping position. Fig. 3 is an end view in normal position, and Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical section showing the car in dumping position.
The present embodiment of my invent-ion, comprises ay car having a frame l, supported bv wheels 2 `-in the ordinary manner, the
' wheels being adapted to run upon a track 30,
which is provided with a depressed portion 31 for a purpose to be hereinafter described.
The bottom of the car is com osed of two leaves 3, 3a, arranged longitudinally of the car and abutting at their inner ends, the outer edges of the leaves being hinged to the frame as at 4. The car is provided at each side near the bottom with a swinging door 5, extending the full length of the car and hinged at its upper'edge as at 6, the lower edge of the door b eing adapted to contact with the outer edge of the bottom as shown in Fig. 3, whereby to completely close the car. The ends 9 of the car are solid as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, and that 'portion of the frame above the side doors is also inclosed as indicated at 10.
Each of the side doors 5, is provided at each end with a. block 7, having a notch 8, adapted to be engaged by a locking bar 9, the locking bar extending the full length of the car and having angular ends 11, which ends are pivoted on a pin 10 connected with a plate 12 secured to each end of the car as shown in Fig. 3.
A pair of alined levers 15, are pivoted to each side of the car by their adjacent ends as at 16, and the free ends of the levers are concar, and a shaft 20 is arranged transversely Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led November 14, 1997. Serial No. 402,120.
of the U-shaped hanger. A wheel 19 is journaled on the shaft between thdarms' of the hanger, and a bar 1S' issecuredto the,
inner end of the shaft between the hanger "v and the side of the ear. Lin's 17 connect; the ends of the bar with the levers as shbwn inv Fles. 1 and 2, the said links being -connected with t-he levers near the free ends thereof.
A supplemental rail 32 is arranged upon each side of the track 30, and the said rails`\\- are normally engaged by the wheels 19 on t,
t the descriptlon, that when the wheels of the N car run into the depression 31 of the track, l the wheels 19 will be elevated, thus elevating each side of the car. It will be evident from the U-shaped hangers and the outer ends of the levers 15, which through the link connecnotches 8, thus permitting the weight of the material in the car to force the side dools outwardly as shown in Fig. 5.
The angular ends 11 of the locking bars 9,
, tion 13 will lift the locking bars 9 out of the 75 are provided withpins 23, engaging in slots 8o 25 in the ends of a cross bar 24, which is provided at its center with a bearing 26, through which passes a bolt 27, connecting the bar with the end of a. beam 29 which extends the full length of the. car immediately below the 35 of the car permitted to escape, on account of the lost-motion connection between the bar 24 and the angular ends 11 of the lockuig bars. lVhile I have described the track 30 as beinfr provided with a depression 31 into which 100 thz' car moves, it is obvious that the supplementary rails 32 might be provided with elevated portions for lifting the wheels 19 whereby to operate the dumping mechanism.
' It will be obi erved, that the car dumps its 105 load while moreno and that as soon as the car moves out of the depression 31, the parts will be restored to their normal position and the locking bars 9 will again lock the parts in the position shown in Fig. 3.
