Boil. known lhatl, Zn/run A. llommonK, a cilizenol' the llniledfilales. andaresidentof .\lilwaul ee. in the county of Milwaukee and Stateof \Visconsin, have invenledccrtainnew and useful lmpro'.'ementsin Railway Freight- (lars; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exactdescription thereof.
My invention consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts hereinafter particularlyset fortluwith reference to the accompanying d rawings, and subsequently claimed, its object being to economize the production of strong and durable railv'ay freight-cars.
Figure. l of the drawings represents a side elevation of a freight-ear body in accordance with my invention, partly broken away and in section; Fig. 2, a transverse sectional view of'the same on the plane indicated by line 2 2 in Fig. l, and Fig. 3 a transverse sectional view of a fragment of the car provided with a fiat bottom and dumping-door.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A indicates each of a pair of lower central steel channel-beams on suitably-bent lower members B of metallic bmly-bolsters, the upper horizontal members Uof whicharesuppol'ted on said beams. Angular melallicclips l) embrace the ends of beams A and are made fast at their ends to horizontal stay-bars l supported on said beams parallel to the upper members of the body-bolsters. .()thcr steel channel-beams F are fastened on the bolsters and bars aforesaid, and end braces l" are connected at their ends to the, latter beams. The aforesaid body-bolsters and end clips serve in practice as supports for the drawbars of the car. Depending side trusses (i and stays H are made fast to the beams F, and in rigid hook comurction with these beams are the ends of metallic rests l at suitable intervals apart, the construction and arrangement of parts thus far described constituting the underframing of the freight-car herein specified.
The body J of the car is tubular, and in practice it consists of a plurality of suitablybeiit plates of iron or steel riveted together similar to-the construction of the body of an ordinary tank-car. 'lhe carbody is supported on bolsters and r sts l th under-framing. to which it is fastened by suitable means. Embracing the car-body are metallic bands K, fastened at their ends to the beams F of tallic sliding doors N, the lower ends of.
which are shown bent to embrace under flanges P of said extensions.
The top of the car-body is shown provided with openings closed by doors Q, and a runway R. as well as a hand-rail S are shown supported over said car-body. Ladder-rails 'l are shown attached to' a side'of the carbody, and in Fig.1'anormally plugged cleanout opening U is shown in the bottom of said car-body.
As shown in'Fig. 3, the bottom of the carbody may be flat and pmvided with a dump: ing-door V, that is held closed by a suitablyarranged turn-l'iutton W or other suitable means. Steel braces, similar to the one X shown in Fig. 3; may be made fast at their ends to the beams 1* to strengthen the underframing and supplen'ient the rests has the direct supports for the flat-bottom tubular car-body and various modifications of detail may be made in the general construction of said under-training and ear-body without depal-lure from my invention.
From the foregoing It will be understoodlhat i provide a tubular all-metal freight-car for the hauling of general merchandise, and the same will be found very strong and durable in practice. i
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desireto secure by Letters I Patent, is 1. A railway freight-car having a tubular body provided with side openings and lateral extensions surroumliug the openings, trackrails supported on said extensions of the car.- body, and sliding doors hung on the rails.
2. A railway freight-car having a tubular body provided with side openings-and lateral extensions surrounding the openings,- trackrails supported on said extensions of the carbody, and sliding doors hung on the rails and engaged at their lower ends with flanges of the aforesaid body extensions.
3. A railway freight-car having an underframing comprising a pair of central lower channel-beams,body-bolstershav'ingthe members thereof under and over the said beams to which they are connected, clips embracing l l l the ends of the aforesaid beams, bars on the beams in connection with said clips, other beams on the bolsters and bars and rests supported in connection with the latter beams; a
' 5 tubular body on-the rests, and means for s0.-
curing the body in place.
framing comprising a pair of lower central channel-beams, body-bolsters having the mem- 4. A railway freight ear' having an nnder bers thereof over and under said beams to which they are connected, other beams on the
