No. 895,2115. i.
' To all who-m it -iiiy concern:
Be it 'known that we, JOHN R. Vfinr'rnfiloni: and JOHN F. Morta-ii., both of Iiidianapolis, county of .\Iarion, and State of 'lndiana, have invented a certain new and uscful Inserted-Cutter-Blade Holder; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full,A
clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the acconipanvingr drawings, in which like letters refer to like parts.
The object of this invention is to inrlirove the means for holding` inserted cutter blades more securely and steadily in place. To this end we combine with the housing or eut-ter head and the cutter or blade therein, a thimble beside the cutter or blade heldin placeby a screw bolt entering the housing. the adjacent surfaces of said tliiniblc. and blade being correspondingly op )osite and recessed to receive a loc-king blocI for holdingr the blade in place.
The nature of this invention will beuiiderstood from the accompanying drawings and the followingr description and claims.
Figure 1 is a plan view of the milling cutter. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the cutter partly broken away a-iid partly in section and with some of the blades removed. l* ig. 3 is a side elevation of a blade. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the locking block. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the tliinible.
Iii detail l0 is the housing or cutter head ada ted to be secured. upon any suitable shaft or spindle 1], whereb the housing will he driven. The housing has in its periphery Specification o/Lettefrs Ptent. Y

transversely extending grooves l2 to receive -l the blades or cutter I3.' These blades or cutters are elongated pieces of steel with the cro :ing edge along one side, on eizd or both oii end and side. .In one side of the blade a pair of recesses i4 are made sid.- by side and near each other. The recess has two surfaces, a back flat surface arranged align larly with reference to the surface of the knife, and a curved. crescentsh-.iped surface, the points of the crescent extending towards the cutting edge of the knife. ln other words, the rec-ess is so formed as to recei\c about half of the cylindrical locking block i )INSEBTAED-CUTTER-B LADE HOLDER.

thiinble 17, which is eylindrically and centrally apertured to receive the screw bolt 1S that extends through said thiiiible with a iillistcr head and screws into the body of the housing l0. 'llie tliimitle 1T is provided oii its periphery with a recess 19 substantially the saine as the recesses 14 in the blade excepting that the curved surface in said recess 19, whicliis crescent-shaped. has its points iojectiiw inward towards the middle of the housing, lbeing arranged just the rei'erse of the curved surfaces o'i the recesses 14 iii the blade.
"i vWhen assembled the cylindrical locking block lits iii the recesses I4 and 19. they registering with or being opposite to each other'. When the screw bolt is tightened it holds the thiinble down, the tliiiiible holds the locking block and the locking block holds the blades in place. It is noted that the cutter is not held in place by engagement therewith of thei tliiiiible as the blade and thiiiiblt` need not necessarily touch each other. nor is the locking block held in place by the contact of the screw bolt` as they need not touch each other. ln fact, not more than two parts of the combination need necessarily touch each other. the action being successive from tht` bolt to the thiiiible, from the tliinible to the locking block and `from the locking blocl: to the blade, so that considerable binding force is exerted u )on the blade. By .reason of the cylindrical locking block and the correspondiiig recesses in the blade and tliiiiible. the blade will be held from a longitudinal moveiiiciit as well as `from any movement radially of the housing. This holds the blade in plact` while its` eiid may he used. as well as while its longitudinal edge may be used.
Whenever the eiid o'f the cutter or knife has been coiisidcmbly worn. or if for any reason there needs to be an adiiistnient of the )ositioii of the blade. this is rendered possile by the plurality of the recesses H iii each blade. Y
l5, the flat end of the locking block engaging the flatiiiiier surface of the recess and the periphery of the locking block resting against the curved surface of the recess. A recess lti is also formed in the eripliery of the hoizsiug 1U and ad'acent to the transverse groove l2. This circular recess is adapted to receive the Arecesses hnvinff similarl f formed opnosing surfaces, a loclring bloc fitting in Lie recesses in the blade and thimble, und n bolt for securing seid thiinble to the housinff whereby the sleeve resists the tendency o the blade to escape from the groove.
2; The combination of a housing grooved to receive a blade und recessed to receive a thiinble adjacent thereto, a. blade in said groove provided with n recess in its side, a
thimble beside the blade with n recess regis' tering with the recess in the blade, said recesses in the blade and thimble having opposing inner flat surfaces and op osing concave surfaces, a cylindrical lockin lock fitting in the 'recesses in said blade and thimble, and a.
,Screw bolt for securing 'the thimble to the housin '31 T e combination of a housing grooved to receive s. blade and recessed to receive a fixed our signatures in the presence of the Witnesses herein nan1ed.
