sass-Look.
Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed March 12, 1908. Serial No. 420,723.'
Patented Aug. 4, 1908.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT NATIIEN Pon- TEX, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Crawford and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Locks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descr' tion of the invention, such as will enable otcrs skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. 7 This invention relates to an improved sash lock designed for locking both the upper and lower sashes in any desired position.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of this class which is simple in construction, cheap to manufacture and ellicient in operation, having means for preventing the opening of the device from the outside.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out 1n the ap pended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a front elevation of a portion of two window sashes showing this improved lock applied; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a portion of two sashes showing the device in locked position, with parts broken out; Fig. 3 represents a front view of the locking mechanism applied. Fig. 4 shows a perspective view of a slightly modified form of rack bar.-
In the embodiment illustrated a base plate I is shown having apertures as 2 therein through which the fastening screws as 3 are passed for securing this plate to the top of the meeting rail of the lower sash.
Two perforated spaced lugs 4 and 5 project u wardly preferabl from the'rear edge of sait plate 1 to form )earings for the in-v tle 6 of the dog or catch member 7. his member 7 is preferably made as shown provided with a rack engaging terminal 8 having a screw threaded aperture 9 in which is mounted a set screw 10 for a purpose to' be described.
The rack bar 11 is secured in any suitable face of one of the side rails of the upper sash",
as shown in Fig. 1: This rack bar 11 has latorally projecting shoulders 12 with screw threaded apertures 13 arranged beneath each shoulder to receive the set'screw 10 of the catch member when it is desired to lock said member-securely to the rack bar and thereby prevent d sengagement of the catch or dog 7 romsaid rac r her by 1neans, of a. cane or other implement such as might be used to disengage the dog 7 were this screw not emplo ed.
n Fig. 4 a casting 14 is shown having a single shoulder or tooth 15 with a screw threaded aperture 16 arran ed therebelow to receive the set screw 10 of the catch member and it is also provided with the aperture 17 to receive a fastening screw for securin it to the sash rail. When this form is use an desirednumber may be spaced at a suitablia distance alon the side rail of the upper sash and secured tl i desired.
In the use of this device the plate .1 having becn'secured to the upper face of the meeting rail of the lower sash and the rack bar 11 atereto by SCI cws or otherwise astached to the side rail of the 11 :per sash, the
lower sash may be raised and t 0 upper sash lowered the desired distance and the catch 7 engaged with one of the shoulders 12 of the rack bar 11 whereby said sashes are held against movement from the outside.
The set screw 10 is )rovided when it is desired to more securely ock the sashes against movement.
From the fore-going description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings,
the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requirin a more extended explanation.
Various changes iin the form, proportion and the minor detai s of construction may be resorted to without'departing from the principle or sacrificing angnof the advantages of this invention as de claims.
I claim as my invention:
