HITCHCOCK Z. AXGEVINE, OF LOS ASGELES, CALIFORNIA, ASS IGNOR OF ONE-THIRD TO CHARLES EDWARD .lOXE-S, OF LANCASTER, CALIFORNIA.
BOOT AND SHOE.
Application filed September 26, 1906. Serial No. 336,355.
To all 21:71am it may concern:
Be it known that I, HrroncoorcZrzxrs Axonvrxn, of the city of Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles, in the State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boots and Shoes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification, reference being bad to the annexed drawings and to the letters and figures marked thereon.
My said invention which relates to certain new and useful improvements in boots and shoes, has for its object to enable the bottom or lowest part of the heels of boots and shoes to be easily removed when worn, and to be easily replaced by a new or unworn bottom part when required.
My invention is such that the removable and replaceable bottom or wearing part of the heels of boots or shoes is easily removed and replaced without necessitating resort to the services of a boot or shoe maker or repairer. I
My invention consists in constructing the heel portioniof a boot or shoe with a hollow or receptacle of sufficientdepth or height therein, wherein the operative parts of my device are contained.
The operative parts of m device consist of a plate fastened to its edges by nails. or brads, or spikes, driven into the wood or leather or other material, of which the heel of a bootor shoe is constructed. This plate is a covering late for inclosing the bottom of a reces in heel of a boot or shoe wherein two adjust-able plates having holes or indentations for engagim with, and firmly holding or retaining in the boot or shoe certain studs and the parts connected therewith, are contained. These studs project upwards from the lower halves of a series of snappcis, whiclrengage with 9. corresponding series of the upper halves of snappers, or equivalent recesses in the plate wherein the upper parts of these snappers are contained. Tie lower halves of the snappers are contained in, or fastened to, the removable plate of metal, or other material, which constitutes the treading surface of the heel. and I g I the purpose of admitting of the temporarily 105 whcnthe two halves of the several pens are placed together so as to engage \Vi each other, thenthe movable lower portion or the heel is fastened to the upper part of the heel and the studs provided with a head project upwards from the center of the lower leslf of 1 each other as required. In the movable 110 Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 4, 1908.
each snapper, passing through the upper part of the snapper, and through corres 0nding holes in the plates fastened to the inside of the hollow of the heel and movable plates operated by a right and left. hand screw, which on being rotated in either a right or left hand direction cause the holes or catches in the two movable plates to engage with the studs, and thereby to retain the bottom or tread plate firmly in place.
The entire device constituting my invention operates as is next herein set forth, with reference to the annexed drawings of which Figure 1, is a longitudinal section of the heel of a boot or shoe constructed in accordance with my present invention. Fig. 2, is an enlarged section of the lower art of. the heel showing the arrangement an construction of the parts more distinctly than in Fig. 1. Fig. 3, IS a detailed plan of the two movable plates and the right and left hand screws for operating them. Fig. 4, is a plan of the plate which covers over the movable )lates shown at Fig. 3, and the right and left hand screws therein.
Fig. 0, is a plan of the plate containing the lower halves of the snappcrs. Fig. 6, is a plan of the plate containmg the upper halves of the sna )pers. Fig. 7 is a plan of a vulcanized india rubber pa fastened to the lower hollow part of the heels of a boot or shoe, by cement and nails, or otherwise fastened thereto.
As shown by Fig. 1, my new or improved heel is or may be constructed of a series of lifts a, b, c, (I, e, f, and g, respectively, as shown at Fig. 1. A hollow or receptacle marked B, extends upwards into the heel as shown in F i 1, of the drawings. Alon the center of the heel as shown at Fig. I, tiere extends a suflicient opening to ermit of the right and left hand screw sha t C, to pass horizontally therethrough.
T he rightand left hand screws upon the posite directions of the screw thr respectively, engaging with correspondinglliy tapped portions of the two movable plates J, and E. The outer end of the shaft C, is made square as shown at Figs. 1, and 3, for
placing thereon, a handle or key for rotating 1 the right and left hand screws D, D, for moving the right and left hand movable plates E, and E, nearer to or further from shaft C, are shown by the inclinations in (B)- eads D,
i i i plates E, and E, there are holes F, and F, respectively, as may be more particularly seep in plan, Fig. 3.
he two plates E, and E, are carried upon the plate II, II, whichis fastened by brads or nails to the material constituting the heel of the boat. as shown more especially in Figs. '1, 4, and 6. The plate H, H, constitutes an elticient flat sliding surface for the plates D, and D, to be 'moved backwards and forwards upon. Another )late I, as shown in Figs. 1. and '2, and in Fig. 5, is situate beneath the other parts of the heel which are hereinbefore described, and a lining of vulcanized india rubber J, or of analogous ma terial is placed between the plate I. and the plate H, H. This pad of indie. rubber or analogous material is shown at Fig. 7, and this pad is fastened to the body of the heel by nails or brads being driven through it and into the material of the said heel, as shown at Figs. 1. and 7. The plate I, is the plate which carries the larger, that is to say, the upper half of each of the several snappers K, as shownx at Figs. 1, '2, and 0, while the smallerhalves K, of the snap )ers are fas tened to the bottom plate 1, and these smaller halves K, of the snappers K, and studs with heads marked 72, pro ect upwards through the holes in the upper halves of the Snappers K, through holes in the plate H, and into and through the holes or recesses F, and F, in the two sliding plates E, and E.
'hen the lower plate G, with its smaller and lower halves of the snappers K, fastened thereto. which smaller halves of said snappers have each a stud head It. projecting upwards from it. is to be inserted so as to be held securely in my new or improved heel, then the screw shaft C, is so turned that the holes or recess s F, and F, in the )lates E, and E, are situated centrally over the snappers so that the heads and studs 71, of the snap ers may pass up through and into the upper wives of the Snappers K, fastened as already explained into the plate 1, without interference by the holes or recesses F, and F, in the two )lates E, and E, and when the lower plate G, ias been thus placed so as to be in touch all round with the pad J, then the screw shaft C, with its right and left hand screws I), and D, is turned in the direction to move the two plates E, and E, so that the holes or recesses F, and F, therein, are under the heads of, the studs 71, and thereby hold the bottom plate G, in operative position.
I claim as my invention. In heels for boots and shoes, the device snappers, the smaller part of each of which carries a vertical PIOJtCtlHg stud and head the larger part of the snappers, the sliding plates operated by right and left hand screws and having openings for engaging with the studs and heads of the smaller halves of the Snappers, the plate upon which the sliding plates are supported and moved, the plate carrying the larger part of the snap crs, she plate carrying the smaller part of t 1e snappers with studs and heads, the elastic pad, all contained in and fastened to the heel of a. boot or shoe and operating together in the manner and for the purposes substantially as hereinbefore described.
In testimony whereof, I, the said HITCH- COCK ZENL'S Axonvmn, have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
