Application ltiled July 13, 1907. Seral l Journale in the dei? frame 10 is a rock shaft 13 which 'rox'.a citizen of the United States, and a rcsihas a square endas shown at 14, upon which dent of Roselle Park, county of Union, and' State of New Jersey, have lnvented certain' new and useful Improvements' in Transonb Operating Mechanism, of which the following is aspecication.
My invention relates to mechanism for op etat-ing transoms and the like.
The object of my invention is to provide an im roved transom operating device which willi facilitate the operation of the transom, that is-opening, closing and locking the transom in any of its positions.
A further object is to 'provide a construetion by which the greater portion of the .mechanism may be concealed within the door frame.
The invention comprises more specifically speaking a lever fulcrumed at an intermediate point having one of its arms connected through suitable devices with the transom and 'its other arm suitably connected with a lever refer to operating and locking means. I employ a rock shaft suitably journa ed in the door .frame having a spring arm fixed thereon suitably connected with the transom, and also having fixed to it a rock shaft which is slotted to receive a pin provided on one arm of vthe fulcrumed lever, the other arm of the fulcrunied lever being engaged by the lever operating and looking means, which latter is adapted to be actuated by hand.
An embodiment of my invention with several modifications of certain part-s is shown in the accompanying drawings, of which Figure 1. is a side elevation showing the door frame, a transom and operating device with the preferred form :of lever operating means; Fig. 2 is a detail elevation, part in section, showing the rock shaft, rock arm and spring arm hereafter referred to; Fig. 3- is a detail sectional elevation of the lever opcr ating means shown in Fig. 1 Fig. ,4 is a detail elevation of amodified form of lever operating and locking meaus;i1`ig. 5 is a detail view showing a part of the lever operating means shown in Fig. 4, with special reference to the locking and unlocking operation; and Fig. 6 is a detail elevation of a further modified form of lever operating and locking means.
Referring now more s ecitically to said drawings, 1 0 indicates tlie door frame in which is suitably mounted .the transom 1l.
g The transom 11 may be mounted in the ing move-ment. t The outer end of rock shaft 13 has suitably is mounted a sleeve 15 which may be keyed thereto by a set screw 16 and which has a 1n FE- 1, and passing looselyT under a retainer '.18 oiithe transom 11 to permit a slightslidfixed thereon the rooliiprm 19 which has` a slot and pin connection as by slot 2O and 1n 21 with @ne arm of a lever 22 fulcrume at irermefziisre point 23 in the door frame. Itl is obvious that although I have here shown the slot 2Q as being in the rock arm.l9 and the pin 21 as being on one arm of fulcrumed lever 22, the pin 21 cou-ld just as well be on rock arm 19 and the slot 20 be formed in fulcruined [ever 22. The slot 20 is diagonally disposed in the rockarm 19to provide a certain acceleration of movement which is thereby obtained upon rocking the rock arm 19 into 'a position shown in dotted lines in Fia'. 1 by operating the fulcrumed lever 2 2. 'lille lower arm of the fulcrumed lever 22 is slotted as shown at 24 in Fig. 1 to receive a pin 25 mounted on an extension 26 of a tlneaded nut 2T which is moved by rotation of the worm 'Zit passing through it. The rotation of the wenn 28 is designed to be affected' by an actuating handle 29. The rotation of the worm 2e nieves the nut 27 which b means ofthe pin 25, thus operates the fu crumedr le ver 22 bij.' which the transom 1s closed and Other means may be employed to eli'ectA the opersng and locking of the fulcrumed lever 22- For example, in Fig. 4, I have shown e.- segment gear 32 -pivotedat 33 which is. provided with a slot 34 engaging the pin 35 on the leerer arm of the ful'ci'umed lever 22. Rot-ation of the segment gear 32 on the pivot 33, thus obviously operates the fulcrumed lever 2:2 F or the purpose of rotating said segment gear 32 a pinion 36 is provided which is mounted u'pon the rod 37 which is suitably peurnaled and passing through the face of the? door frame, has tilted on its out-er end a hand actuating lever 38. The pinion 36 meshes with the teeth of segment gear 32 and in .rotating the rod 37 by turning the handle 38, the movement is transmitted to the segment gear 32. The rod 37 has sutlicient reciprocating movement in itsrjournals connected with t .to permit me to provide a locking lpin .39
e pmion 3.6 when the latter 1s'1n a normal position which is adapted to engage and hold t inwhich itis held by means of a spring 40 To unlockI the pinion 36 the handle 38 is drawn outward and thus the pinion 36 moved against the tension of spring 4.0 out of engagement \vith the locking pin 39, the return tolocklng position being automatic by the action of s ring 40. In .this form of lever operating an journal bearings for the rod 37.
A still further modified form of lever o eratingtmd locking means is illustrated in `ig. 6.
this form an actuating handle 45 may operate a lever 46 suitabl guided in a frame 47 and .provided with a s ot 48 enga ing the pin 35m fulcrumed lever 22. The ever 4 6 passes through a guide plate 49 on the door rame and hason itsunder portion slots 50 which are normally moved into engagement with the bottom of guide 49 by a spring 51 'as clearl shown in Fig. 6. To operate the lever, tlie handle 45 is raised, thus moving the lever 46 against the tension fof spring 5] out of its locking engagement with the bottom of guide 49, and the lever may then be reciprocated to operate the fulcrumed lever 22.
