WINSLOW R. PARSONS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
WINDOW-SASH-OPERATING APPARATUS.
Speecation of Letters Patent.
Patented Dee. SO, iQlLS.
Application filed December 19, 1910. Serial No. 598,026.
To all whom t may concern Be it'known that I, WINsLow It. PARSONS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and .State of Illinois,l have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window-Sash- Operating Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in window sash operating apparatus especially designed and intended for opening and closing very large and correspondingly heavy swinging sash, and may be shutters, heretofore essentially consisting of a pin projecting from and below the bottom edge of the sash into a continuously straight slot in a lever bent at its shank beyond the slot, vand provided with a gear actuated by a worm supported from the window sill. Viththe pin thus located `and the slot Straight throughout its length the direction of the force applied during the initial opening and inal closing of such a sash is tangentlal-to the axis of the lever, and, therefore, substantially at a right angle to the length of the lever diametrically through the axis of the pin, and with the result that heretofore an objectionable amount of force has been necessary in the initial movement of the window from and toits closed position, which resistance is also increased to some extent by the location of the pin directly beneath the sash, but mainly because of the leverage being then the shortest.
Thev prime object of my invention, broadly stated, is an apparatus generally of this pin and slotted lever t pe in which the initial force .exerted by tlie lever against the pin shall be on lines at a right angle to the axis of the lever and the pin located ataJ point removed from the sash,l and the pin, as the result of all the forces moves on a line whereby the power for actuating the window immediately from and toward its closed position is reduced to a minimum.
A further object of my invention is to have the pin so located, with reference to -the sash, that when the sash is closed the lever, its gear and the worm may be located inwardly beyond the sash, and thereby at a pointwherethey areprotected by the sash from'outside moisture, and at the same time exposed to the influence of the internal dry and warm air of the room in which the window is located.
With these ends in view, my invention finds embodiment in certain features of novelty in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts by which the said objects and certain other objects are hereinafter attained, all as fully described with reference to the accompanying drawings, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In said drawings:
Figure l is a horizontal view in section through a window 'casing and sash having my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a view in section on the line A-A of Fig. l; and, Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line lB-B of Fig. 2.
My invention is concerned primarily with windows of the class which employ a casing' a in which the sash Z) is pivoted at one side thereof by the hinges c. In a suitable recess in the casing I secure the o-perating mechanism which will be seen to consist of the shaft d having the worm e secured thereto,
and for convenience in adapting the apparatus to sashes pivoted at the right or left hand as may be desired, I preferably secure the worm on the shaft by detachable connections, such as the screw f, so that the worm can be removed from the shaft and its direction reversed.
The worm shaft is ournaled in the vertical sides g of the base plate L, which is secured to the bottom of the recess in any suitable manner as byl the screws indicated. The base plate is preferably provided with a cover plate z', which is conveniently secured in place by the lugs j on the side pieces g passing through correspondingly shaped recesses in the top of the plate.
Journaled on a suitable bearing projecting upward from the base plate is the gear segment 7c, the teeth of which mesh with the worm e. This bearing may be conveniently formed by the pin Z passing through the bearing disk m and apertures in the segment 7c and the cover plate z', the latter being held in place bythe screw n, and the washer 0.
ably formed by' the army p secured to the bottom of the window sash and carrying the projection q at its outer end, which projection preferably takes the form of an antifriction roller and extends over the slots vformed in the arm r which is preferably formed integrally with the gear segment c. In order to enable me to get the full The connection between the window sash and the gear segment is prefercan be introduced into the narrow space allowable in the window casing, and it will further be seen that the mechanism herein shown is arranged so as to give the greatest leverage at the start of the opening movement and at the end of the closing movement when the greatest power 4is required. Itpwill also be noted that the co-action of the worm and its gear serves to hold the sash in any position of adjustment.
While I have shown and described my invention as embodied in the form which'I at present consider best adapted to carry out its purposes, it will be understood that it is capable of modifications, and that I do not ldesire to be limited in the interpretation of the following claims except as maybe necessitated by the state of the prior art. And in this connection `it should be observed that as to that feature of my invention providing for the application of a force from' vention to dispense with the arm p and have the pin project directly from the bottom of the sash.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is l. In a device of the class described, a window casing and a sash pivoted therein, a pin supported by the sash, a lever provided with an angular slot engaging said pin, a
worm and a gear connection between the lever and the worm, substantially 'as described.
2. In a device of the class described, a window casing and a sash pivoted ltherein in combination withy a worm means .for ro-V tating it, a segment gear mes Ling therewith, a lever swung byv said segment having a slot therein, the inner end of which slot is at an inclined angle, relative to its outer end and a projection carried by the sash engaging said slot, substantially as described;
3. In a device of the class described the combination with a worm and means for ro-
