i. To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, I'IENRY N. BAcK'Us, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Im )rovements in Hinges for Shipping-Cans; and clear, and exact descri )tion of the invention, such as will enable otliers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. This invention relates to a hinge for uniting the cover to the body of a can or "essel for use in the transportation of oysters in bulk in refri erator packages and consists in the c'ombinagon and association of parts hereinafter in re fully set forth and claimed.

The objeetd the invention is to provide a simple and strong hinge for connecting the cover .to the body of the can or receptacle, the structure of the hinge being such as to enable the cover to'fall to a vertical position at the back of the can or receptacle when opened and there being such an arrangement as to obviate all strain upon the hinges and prevent their being torn from the can.

The above object is attained by the structure illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which: k

Referring to the characters of reference 1 indicates the body of the can which is )referably rectangular in shape and 2 incicates the cover adapted to lit onto the can.

Cncircling the can near the top is a ledge 25 onto which the cover is adapted to fit when closed, the portion 4 of the can above said ledge lying within the cover, as clearly shown in Fig. 3. The margin of the cover is strengthened by rolling it as shown at- 5,

over a metal strand 6. At the back of the cover a portion of the. rolled margin 5 is cut awayto allow of the mounting of the hinges upon the strand 6. Each of the hinges 7 consists of a strap of metal folded upon itself forming at one end an eye 8 through which passes the metal strand Gin the rolled margin specification of Letters Patent. The ends of the metal strap from which the hinge is formed overlap and are secured by the transverse ri'vet 13 which is passed through said ends and the body of the hin e between the pintles 6 and 10. In order to allow the hinges to pass the rolled flange 3 f on the body of the can, said hinges are bent outwardly as shown at 14.

To allow the eyes 9 of the hinges to receive the strand or bolt 10 passing through the rolled flange ll of the plate 12, a portion of said flange is cut away as clearly shown in Fig. 1.

The use of the hinge herein'shown obviates the liability of its being torn from the body of the can and enables the cover to be thrown backwardly to any desired position when opened, yet directing the cover properiy into place upon the top of the can when closed.

Havim thus fully set forth my invention, what I eliiim as new and-desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In a hinge structure, the combination of the cover and body of the can, the top hav *ing a rolled margin and a metal strant assing through the roll of said margin, the liody of the can having .ate secured thereto whose margin is rolleil and a metal strand passing through the rolled margin of said plate, hinge members comprising metal straps folded upon themselves to form eyes in their opposite ends, the eyes at one end of said hinge members receiving the metal strand in the margin of the cover, and the eyes at the opposite ends of said members receiving the metal strand in the rolled margin of the plate secured to the body of the can.
