DEWIS LANDAU, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
STREET-PRINTING MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 4, 1908.
Application led .Tune 22, 1906. Serial No. 322,861.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Beit known that I, DEwIs LANDAU, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Street-Printing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a machine which will rapidly and effectively rint upon street pavements, roadways, or the like, for the purpose of extensively advertising throughout a city or locality.
In the accompanyin drawing, the figure is a side elevation, part y broken away, of a machine embodying my invention.
Referring to the drawing, 1 represents the side bars of the machine, mounted upon front Wheels 2 and rear wheels 3. Between said front and rear wheels the side bars are formed into U-shaped bearings 4 for boxes 5 slidable vertically in said bearin s.
6 indicates the printing rol er having a shaft 7 normally depressed in said boxes 5 by springs 8. Said prmting roller can be raised by means of a lever 9 connected by a link 10 with an arm 11 on a transverse shaft 12 upon which shaft are secured arms 13 connected by links 14 with said boxes, so that the driver can, at any time, by moving forward said lever 9, raise the printing roller off the ground. In this position it can be held by a curved rack 15 of common construction. The printing roller carries type 16, preferably of rubber. said boxes are frames 17, whic carry the shafts 18 of inking rollers 19, of which there may be any suitable number, three being here shown. Thus said inking rollers move u and down with the printing roller, being a ways in contact therewith. To supply the inking rollers with ink there are provided three tanks or vessels 20, adapted to discharge the ink upon the several inking rollers through valves 21, which are operated by means of levers 22 attached to links 23 extending forward in reach of the driver and there provided with handles 24. These ink receptacles 20 preferably contain inks of different colors, and the driver supplies the ink of the desired color to its inking roller by drawing forward the corres onding handle 24. In order to maintain c ean the printing roller, there is provided a rotary brush 25 driven by a sprocket wheel 26, sprocket chain 27, and sprocket wheel 28, the latter driven Supported upon the u per ends of.
by a sprocket chain 29 and sprocket wheel 3() from the rear axle.
To clean the surface of the roadway which is to be printed there are provided two rotary brushes 31 (one only being here shown), arranged diagonally in front of the printing roller, and driven by sprocket wheels 32 and sprocket chains 33 from sprocket wheels 34 on a transverse shaft 35, which shaft is driven by a sprocket wheel 36, and chain 37 from a sprocket wheel 38 on the same shaft as the wheel 28. The frames 39, carrying the brushes 31, swing from pivots 40 and are raised, with the printing roller, by means of links 41 attached to the lever 9, swinging arms 42, and links 43 connecting said arms with the frames 39, so that the brushes are only lowered to brush the street just before the printing is commenced. When the brushes are so lowered the dust is blown from under the printing roller by means of a series of nozzles 44 supplied with compressed air by a tube 45 leading from a blower 46 driven by means of a sprocket Wheel and a chain 47 from a sprocket wheel 48 upon the rear axle. These nozzles are also raised and lowered with the printing roller by means of the swinging arms 42 by which they are supported.
In some cases it may be desired to first print the surface of the street with oil and then blow on the imprint paint in the form of a powder. This powder is supplied by means of a tube 51 connected with a receptacle 52 for the powder, compressed air being supplied from a blower 53.
54 is a roller which is rolled over the imprint to spread the paint and render the same as uniform as possible.
I claim 1. A street printing machine, comprising a frame mounted on wheels, bearings vertically movable therein, a shaft in said bearings, a printing roller on said shaft, inking rollers, means movable with said bearings for supporting said inking rollers, means for inking said inking rollers, a lever, an operative connection between said lever and printing roller, to vary its height by the operation of the lever, a rotary brush for cleaning said printing roller, means for blowing the dust from the ground in front of said printing roller, a rotary brush arranged to brush the ground in front of the printing roller, means for raising said latter brush from the ground, and means connected with the driving wheel of the. machine for rotating said brushes and operating said blowing means, substantially as described.
2. A street printing machine, comprising a frame mounted on wheels, bearings vertically movable therein, a shaft in said bearings, a printing roller on said shaft, inking rollers, means movable with said bearings for supporting said inking rollers, means for selectively inking said inking rollers, a lever, an operative connection between said lever and printing roller, to vary its height by the operation of the lever, a rotary brush for cleaning said printing roller, means for blowing the dust from the ground in front of said `means, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand 1n the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
DEWIS LANDAU.
