STREET-SWEEPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 592,539, dated October 26, 1897.
Application filed July 26, 1897. Serial No. 645,952. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that LALEXANDER H. S. DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at \Vashington, in the District of Go1umbia,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Street-Sweepers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such' as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of my invention is to provide means whereby streets may be efficiently and economically cleaned or swept by hand which shall be convenient of adjustment to accommodate men of different heights and to compensate for variations in the length of the brush and having a brush head or carrier easily reversible, so that when the brush is unduly worn in one direction itmay be turned for use in the other direction.
The invention consists in the combination of a roller or truck, a frame or handle connected with the axle of said roller, a brush or broom carrying frame having perforated bent arms pivotally connected with the truck, and means for adjusting the broom-carrying frame with relation to the handle or operating frame.
The invention also consists in the combination of a pivoted brush or broom carrying frame having projecting arms and a reversible brush or broom head having clampingbars for gripping the brush material or completed brushes, provided with sockets to fit the projecting arms, and means for coupling and uncoupling the frame and the head, whereby the entire brush may be readily reversed.
In the drawings formingapart of this specification, Figure l is a side elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same, and Fig. 3 is a detail showing the projecting arm and the end of the broom in elevation.
In the preferred form of my improved sweeper represented in the drawings, 1 is aroller-support. 2 is the axle with which the operating frame or handle 3 is connected and upon whichit is supported. By mounting my broom on a single roller said broom will follow and conform to ordinary irregularities of a street-surface just as freely as it would without any rolling support, whereas if supported on a two-wheel truck the broomcarrying frame to have such freedom would have to be swiveled or pivoted to the truck to permit of a rocking motion with relation to the line of movement. 4 isabrush or broom carrying frame having perforated bent arms 5 5 and projecting arms 6 6.
The brush-frame is pivotally connected with the machine, and is adjustable with relation to the operating-frame by means of rod 7 and the perforations in the bent arms 5 5. The purpose of this adjustment is to adapt the same machine to men of difierent heights and to compensate for the wear of the broom or brush. The brush or broom head, or brush carrying head consists of clamping-bars 8 8 for gripping brush material 9 or for gripping and holding completed brushes. These bars are caused to operate as clamps and are held in gripping contact with the brush material or brushes by means of rods or bolts 10 10;
The clamping-bars constituting a head are socketed so as to fit on the projecting arms 6 6, and the head is secured in position on said arms by means of nuts or keys 11 11.
Having described my invention,Iclaim as new- 1. In a street-sweeper the combination of a roller, an operating frame or handle operatively connected with the roller, a broomcarrying frame having perforated bent arms adj ustabl y coupled with the operating-frame, and a rod or bar for adjusting the frames with relation to each other, substantially as described.
2. The combination of a brush-carrying frame, adjustable with relation to an operating-frame, and having projecting arms and a reversible broom-head consisting of clamping bolts and bars, the bars being provided with sockets to fit the projecting arms, substantially as described.
