DEVICE FOR PRINTING ON SIDEWALKS.

Be it known that I, DAVID J. ETLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices forPri ntin g Advertisements on Paved Streets, &c. and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertaius to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The object of this invention is to produce a device for printing advertisements upon paved streets, sidewalks, &c. and to this end the invention consists in the construction hereinafter described and claimed, embodying a wheeled frame supporting a printing device and provided with a rotating brush which operates in advance of the printingroller to sweep the dust and dirt out of the path of the latter and thereby provide a clear surface for the print-ing roller to imprint upon.

In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention, Figure l is a perspective view of a printing device constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a view of the printing device proper.

A designates a casing mounted on wheels B and supporting a brush 0, havingipulleys c at the ends of its shaft. Attached to the case is a bail D, to which is secured the handle E, by which the device is propelled, and within the case, near the brush, are dust-pans F. The drive-wheels B engage the pulleys c and thereby rotate the brush, which latter picks up the dirt from the pavement or street Suitable provision will be made for emptying the pans. In the construction shown in the drawings this is accomplished by hinging the pans at one end and providing their other ends with spring-straps), engaging projections f 'on the case and provided with handles f for convenience in releasing them to dump the pans. Supported at the rear end of the case by arms G is a box H, open at its top and bottom, and

movably fitted within said box is a second box I, by which the printing means are carried. This printing means embodies a printing roller J, carrying the advertisement to be printed, arranged to project below the bottom of the box I and to run upon the ground and imprint upon the surface cleared by the brush, and an inking-roller K in contact with said printing-roller.

To hold the printing-roller properly in engagement with the surface to be printed, boX I is preferably provided with a horizontal partition supporting a weight L.

The box I is connected with the handle E by chain 7 so that the printing-roller may be lifted off the ground to clear a space upon which it is desired to not imprint, and the front end of the case is provided with supplemental rollers M, upon which the device is supported when any distance is to be traversed without imprinting.

To keep the inner box within box H when not in use, a pin N, designed to engage a perforation in the inner box I or any other suit able fastening means, is employed.

It will be observed that the printing devices are carried bya box which is located outside the casing inclosin g the sweeping mechanism and is connected with said casing by arms. This arrangement is one of prime importance, because it enables the utilization of the common and well-known carpet sweeper for sweeping in advance of printing and thereby obviates the necessity of specially constructing a sweeping means to be used with the printing devices.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is l. A device for printing advertisements on paved streets, &c., embodying a casin g, a pivoted handle therefor, a brush, and a movable boX carrying inking and printing rollers-and connected with said handle, so that it may be raised without elevating said casing.

2. The combination with a carpet or analogous sweeper embodying a wheeled casing, a brush therein, and a propelling-handle; of a printing attachment thereto, comprising a box, movable relatively to said casing and supported at the rear end of and outside the same, and a printing-roller and in king means therefor, both carried by said box, substantially as described and for the purpose specified.

A device for printing advertisements on paved streets, &c., embodying a casing, a hair dle therefor, a brush, a box supported at the rear end of the casing and open at its top and bottom, a second box, movably supported within said box and connected with said handie, a printing-roller jonrnaled in the inner box and projecting below the lower end thereof so as to imprint upon the surface swept by said brush, and an inking-roller journaled in said inner box and engaged by said printingroller.

i. In a device for printing advertisements on paved streets, &c., the combination of the casing, and the brush, of the pivoted propellinghandle, and printing means connected with said handle.

5. In a device for printing advertisements on paved streets, the combination of the easing, the brush therein, the propelling-handlc, an open-ended box supported rearward of said casing, a box movably fitted within the same and connected with said handle, printing means carried by said inner box, rollers on the front end of said casing, and means for holding the inner box iminovably in the outer box when desired.

6. In a device for printing advertisements on paved streets, the combination with the casing, the brush, and the propelling-handle, of arms projecting rearward from the casing, a box supported by said arms and open at its top and bottom, a box movably fitted within the same and connected with said handle, an d printing means carried by said inner box.
