WITNESSES: 1NVENTOR ATTORNEYj FFKQE JOSEPH E. FIKO AND MAXIMILIAN KILLIAN, OIF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
ADVERTISING DEVICE.
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, (1) JOSEPH E. FIKo and (2) ldAXIMILIAN KILLIAN, 1) subject of the King of Hungary and (2) citizen of the United States of America, residing at North Side, Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Advertising Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to an advertising machine, and the primary object of our invention is to provide a novel machine for printing advertisements upon asphalt pavements, streets or smooth surfaces, the machine being designed whereby the printing or placing of advertisements upon smooth surfaces can be expeditiously and economically accomplishedwithout a cessation inthe operation of the machine.
Another object of our invention is to provide a portable printing machine that can be easily and quickly operated to print or otherwise mark advertisements, signs, announcements and other matter at the intersection of streets, avenues or boulevards, or any other desired point where the matter can be read by pedestrians or travelers.
A further object of our invention is to furnish an automobile or similar vehicle with alternating operated printing rolls that are placed in position to print or otherwise mark a surface during the operation of the automobile.
A still further object of the invention is to accomplish the above results by a mechanical construction that is simple, free from injury by ordinary use, positive in its.action, and highly eflicient as an advertising medium.
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in a novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawings wherein like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which Figure l is a side elevation of the machine in accordance with our invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a portion of the machine. Fig. 8 is a plan of the same, and Fig. 4: is a cross sectional view of a port-ion of the machine.

Serial No. 617,999.
A machine in accordance with this invention comprises an automobile or other vehicle having side frames 1 supported by a forward truck 2 and a rear truck 3, said rear truck having the revoluble axle fl: thereof provided with sprocket wheels 5.
6 denotes oppositely disposed bearings carried by the frames 1 and extending into said bearings are trunnions '7 carried by depending bearings S secured to the under side of a longitudinal frame 9, the bearings 8 being arranged intermediate the ends of the frame 9, whereby said frame can be tilted.
The frame 9 has oppositely disposed bearings 10 and 11, the bearings 10 being located adjacent to the ends of the frame 9 and the bearings 11 centrally of said frame. Journaled in the bearings 10 are shafts l2 and journaled in the bearings 11 is a shaft 13. These shafts have the outer ends thereof provided with cranks 1 1, having wrist pins 15 pivotally connected by bars 16.
17 denotes sprocket wheels mounted upon the shaft 13 and over these sprocket wheels and the wheels 5 pass endless sprocket chains 18.
19 denotes large printing rolls mounted upon the shafts 12. These printing rolls are of a conventional form and are adapted to yieldably hold or support yieldable type (not shown).
20 denotes transverse braces forming elements of the frame 9 and which connect the side bars of the frame intermediate the ends thereof and these braces are connected by bars 21. Mounted between the bars 21 is a segment gear 22 having an operating lever 23, said segment gear having an opening 24 providing clearance for the shaft 18. The segment gear meshes with a segment rack 25 supported by a beam 26 arranged between transverse braces 27 connecting the frames 1.
Mounted upon the frame 9 are inverted U- shaped frames 28 provided with bearings 29 and journaled in these bearings are transverse inking rollers 30 adapted to apply ink to the type carried by the rolls 19.
When the machine is placed in operation, a rotary movement is imparted to the rolls 19 through the medium of the revoluble aXle 4, sprocket wheels 5 and 17 sprocket chains 18, shaft 13, bars 16 and shafts 12. By operating the lever 23, either one of the rolls 19 can be lowered to contact with and revolve upon a smooth surface, whereby the surface will be printed or marked by the type carried by the rolls 19.
There is illustrated a preferred embodiment of the invent-ion in the drawings, but we reserve the right to equip the machine whereby the rolls 19 can be operated independent of the axle 4 or the propelling power of the vehicle, to provide brushes for the type rolls, and to provide ink reservoirs and devices for feeding ink to the inking rollers.
Y Vhat we claim is 1. An advertising machine comprising a portable body, a tiltable frame pivoted centrally thereof upon said body, a printing roll revolubly supported at each end to said frame, means supported upon said frame and driven from a movable part of said body and operatively connected with said rolls for driving them in unison, and means for tilting said frame during the travel of said body for shifting one of said rolls into printing position.
2. An advertising machine comprising a portable body, a tiltable frame pivoted centrally thereof upon said body, a printing roll revolubly supported at each end to said frame, means supported at each side of said frame and driven from a movable part of said body and operatively connected with said rolls for driving them in unison, and supports carried by said frame, sets of inking rolls carried by said supports, each set operatively arranged with respect to a printing roll, and means fortllting said frame thereby shifting one of said printing rolls into operative position to print.
3.1811 advertising machine comprising a portable body, a tiltable frame pivoted centrally upon said body, a shaft journaled at 40 each end to said frame, a printing roll carried by each of said shafts, an operating shaft carried by the frame and provided with a crank at each end, means operatively connected with said cranks and the shafts of the printing rolls for driving these latter in unison when the operating shaft is actuated, means driven from a movable part of said body for actuating said operating shaft, and means for tilting said frame thereby shifting one of said printing rolls into printing position.
4. An advertising, machine comprising a portable body, a tiltable frame pivoted centrally upon said body, a shaft journaled at each end to said frame, a printing roll carried by each of said shafts, an operating shaft carried by the frame and provided with a crank at each end, means operatively connected with said cranks and the shafts of the printing rolls for driving these latter in unison when the operating shaft is actuated, means driven from a movable part of said body for actuating said operating shaft, means for tilting said frame thereby shifting one of said printing rolls into printing position, a set of inking rolls associated with each of said printing rolls, and supporting means for the inking rolls carried by said frame.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
