ADVERTISING DEVICE FOR STAMPING STREETS 0R PAVEMENTS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 26, 1910.
Patented J une 13, 1911.
Serial No. 589,188.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ORRIEN S. BECK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sacramento, in the county of Sacramento, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Advertising Devices for Stamping Streets or Pavements; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which is appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this application.
This invention relates to improvements in advertising appliances, the object of the invention being to produce a device by which streets or pavements may be automatically stamped with any designated advertising device as may be desired, this being accomplished by means of a printing mechanism disposed on a vehicle, which printing mecha nism stamps printed matter on the streets or pavements as the vehicle moves along the same.
A further object of the invention is to produce a simple and inexpensive device and yet one which will be exceedingly efiective for the purpose for which it is designed.
These objects I accomplish by means of parts as will fully appear by a perusal of the following specification and claims.
In the drawings similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
Figure 1 is the side elevation of a portion of the motor vehicle showing my improved appliance installed thereon. Fig. 2 is a view of a portion of a chain showing a letter or Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the type rack without the type inserted therein. Fig. 4 is an end elevation of the type. Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view of one of the type. Fig. 6 is a sectional view taken on a line ww of Fig. 5.
Referring now more particularly to the characters of reference on the drawings, 1 designates a motor vehicle and 2 the fixed rear wheels thereon mounted on the rear shaft or axle 3. Secured on said axle 3 are vertical supports 1 carrying sprocket wheels 5 in their upper ends. Also secured to said member 3 are two obliquely upwardly projecting supports 6 spaced on either side of the support 4; and carrying sprocket wheels 7 in their outer ends. Similarly there is a downwardly obliquely projecting support 8 which is pivotally secured to the member 3 and has a block 9 slidable in its outer end and carrying a sprocket wheel 10, such block 9 being maintained in its normal outer position by means of a spring 11. The normal fixed position of the member 8 is maintained by the spring 12 interposed between such member 8 and one of said members 6 and said member 8 may be raised or lowered by means of a lever 13 operating a rod 14 which in turn operates a bell crank joint 15 connected by a link 16 to the said member 8.
Mounted on the sprockets 5, 7 and 10 is a chain 17 Each link of said chain has on its outer side a type rack comprising a steel spring ring split at one point forming a slot- 19 whereby type 20 having a body 21 and a neck 22 adapted to conform to the members 18 and slots 19 may be inserted therein and carried thereby. The body 21 of said type is hollow as shown in Fig. 6 and has a movable plug 23 which when removed permits ink to be filled into the type 21 and then across the neck 22 is a diaphragm 2 1 having holes 25 whereby said ink may feed to the type 20, the face of which is composed of a porous fabric 26, on the face of which fabric is delineated the letter, such as 27 As the motor vehicle 1 is operated along a street or pavement the spring 12 holds the member 8 in its lowest normal position, causing the type 20 to impinge against the pavement or street and thus the traction thus caused would move the chain 20 so as to cause the several type to rotate and bring its several difierent letters into contact with the pavement and thus print whatever advertisement was carried by said type. Then it is desired to lift the type from the pavement the lever 18 is operated, which through its several connections, as described lifts the member 8 and incidentally the sprocket 10, chain and type from the pavement.
The structure for carrying the device as described herein may be changed asmay be desired to extend the full length of the machine or otherwise, the principle involved being a self inking type and the feature of using this type for the purpose of stamping streets and pavements.
From the foregoing description it will I of the invention.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by LettersPatent is:
1. A device of the character described comprising a' vehicle mounted on Wheels, projecting arms on said vehicle, sprocket Wheels mounted on said arms, a chain movable over said sprocket Wheels, a type rack on each link of said chain, such rack comprising a spring ring split at one point to form a slot and self inking type carried by said rings.
2. A device of the character described comprising a vehicle mounted on Wheels, projecting arms on said vehicle, sprocket Wheels carried by said arms, a chain mount ed on said sprocket Wheels, a self inking type carried by said chain, one of said arms being so disposed as to hold said type against the ground surface over Which said vehicle travels, and a spring resting against said arm as described.
3. A device of the character described comprising a vehicle mounted on Wheels, projecting arms on said vehicle, sprocket Wheels carried by said arms, one of said sprocket Wheels being spring pressed and movable in its arm, a chain mounted on said sprocket Wheels, a self inking type carried by said chain, said spring pressed sprocket Wheel being adapted to hold said chain in ORRIEN SMITH BECK.
