I AlhrneJ u JACOB TAIZ, OFPHIIiADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
BINDER ATTACHJVIENT FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 28, 1908.
Application filed August 9, 1907. Serial No. 387,871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAooB TAiz, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphiaand State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Binder Attachments for Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to improvements in binder attachments for sewing machines, and has for its object the provision of means for facilitating the regulation of the width of binding which is sewed or otherwise attached to a piece of material, preferably, a piece of cloth.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a top plan view of an attachment constructed in accordance with the resent invention. Fig. 2 is a view in front e evation of the device depicted in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the regulating-lever. Fig. 4 is a sectional view, taken on line 4, 4, Fig. 1. Fig. 5 isa sectional view taken on'line 5, '5, Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a sectional view taken on line 6, 6, Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, 1
designates the base plate, which is adapted to lie flat against the top of a sewing machine, and 2 is the folder. The folder 2 com prises a body provided with guiding flanges 3, 3, which are positioned in, substantially, a
vertical plane near the outer end of the body, while they lie in, substantially, a horizontal plane with the inner end of the body, see Fig.
6. It will be noted that the body of the folder is of greater width at its outer end 4, and converges toward its inner end. Integral with the base-plate land the body intermediate its ends, is an auxiliary plate 5, which plate is provided at its outer end with a vertical flange 6. The flange 6 is provided with ratchet teeth 7, whichflange and teeth, 6 and 7, respectively, are positioned contiguous to the body, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 5.
Near the inner end of the body, there is formed a cut-away portion or elongated opening 8, which is normally closed by the guiding and presser body-portion 9 of the regulating-lever 10, hereinafter described. A slotted plate 11 is fixedly secured, at 12, to
regulating lever.
lever-supporting plate 5, and is also, preferably, integrally secured, at 13, to the upper flange of the folder. It will be noted that the front end of the slotted plate 11 is u wardly curved or bowed, at 14, whereby tfi portion 9 of the regulating-lever 10 is per.- mitted to have a free adjustment in said bowed portion. The bowed or curved portion 14 of the binder attachment constitutes a guard for the inner end of the body 9 of the The regulating-lever 10 comprises a plate or horizontal portion 15, provided with an aperture 16, and integral with the plate or horizontal portion 15, is an upwardly extending lever arm 17. The lever-arm 17 is bent upward, at 18, and is e body provided with a suitable grip 19, at its outer end. The lever-arm 17 is provided with a depending lug or tooth 20, constituting a pawl, which normally slides over ratchet 7 and thereby secures the regulating-lever in an adjusted position, as said arm 17 is formed of material having suificient resiliency to act as a spring-lock for fixedly securing the lug or tooth 20 in one of the notches of the ratchet 7 against accidental displacement or adjustment.
The body 9 of the regulating-lever comprises a concavo-convexcd piece of sheetmetal, which conforms in contour or shape to the body portion of the folder 2, Fig. 6. By reason of the fact that the regulating lever is pivotally mounted upon plate 5, at 21, the body portion 9 can be adjusted rela tive to the body portion of the folder, thereby increasing or decreasing the size of the folder at its inner end, which, consequently, controls or regulates the width of the binding, as it passes out of the binding attach "folded binding 23, as clearly seen in Fig. 1.
By reason of the slotted plate 11 being positioned at right-angles or at an obtuse angle to the folder 2, my binding attachment can be adjustably secured to the frame by ordinary fastening means 24. As soon as the binding 23 passes through the lips or lugs 22 of the regulating-lever, the same passes under the presser-foot 25 of the machine, and said binding is sewed to the cloth 26.
The auxiliary plate 5, together with the flange 6, provided with ratchet 7, constitutes a brace for the entire structure of the folder,
said brace provided with adjustable means.
for regulating the width of the binding,
vihiplh'is adapted to be sewed to a piece of 0 0t The body portion 9 of the regulating-lever constitutes an adjustable portion of the folder, which portion is capable of having a lateral movement controlled by a lever-arm, constituting lever-means, which lever-means is provided with locking means for holding it normally in an adjusted position; the locking means being constituted by a ratchet and a lug, the lug perform the function of a dog or pawl for engaging the teeth and notches of the ratchet, and, therefore, the means for regulating the width of the binder is locked in an adjusted position by pawl and ratchet means. The body 9 is protected from injury, by the operator accidentally striking the same or cloth coming in contact with said body or its lugs 22, by the bowed portion 14, under which said body is movably mounted; the bowed portion 14 constituting a guard positioned above the means for controlling the width of the binding.
That I claim is:
1. In a binding attachment, the combination with a plate or support, of a folder provided at one end with a cut-away or open side-portion, a regulating-lever, means pivotally securing said lever to said plate, said lever provided with a portion conforming to the shape of the body of the folder and being capable of closing the cut-away portion thereof, and means for normally holding said regulating-lever in an adjusted position.
2. In a binding attachment for sewing machines, the combination with a folder, of means pivotally mounted and positioned contiguous to said folder and being capable of adjusting the width of the binding passing through the folder, and pawl and ratchet means cooperating with said adjusting means for normally holding the same in an adjusted position.
3. In a binding attachment, the combination with a support, a folder carried by said I support, of a regulating-lever carried by i said support and cooperating with sald folder, said lever rovided with a depending lug or tooth, an said support provided with a ratchet adapted to be engaged by said lug or tooth of the regulating-lever for normally securing said lever in an adjusted position.
4. In a binding attachment, the combination with a folder, of an auxiliary plate socured to and constituting a brace for said folder, said auxiliary plate provided with a vertically-extending flange terminating in a ratchet portion, a regulating-lever pivotally mounted upon said plate, said lever provided with binding-engaging means, and said lever provided with a spring lever-arm adapted to engage said ratchet portion and thereby secure said binding-engaging means in an adjusted position with respect to said folder.
5. In a binding attachment, the combina tion with a plate, of a folder carried by said plate, said folder provided with a side-opening, a regulating lever, means pivotally connecting said regulating lever to said plate, said regulating lever provided with a horizontally-extending concavo-convexed body portion adapted to close the side-opening of said folder, and said body portion provided at its outer end with lips or lugs extending to one side of the body portion and positioned beyond one end of the folder.
6. In a binding attachment for sewing machines, the combination with a folder, of means movably mounted and positioned contiguous to said folder, and bein capable of adjusting the width of the binding passing through said folder, and pawl and ratchet means 006 aerating with said adjusting means for norma y holding the same against movement.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
JACOB TAIZ.
