L. E. HIGGINS. BROOM HOLDER. APPLICATION FILED DEC. 10, 1907.

BROOM-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 10, 1907. Serial No. 405,917.
Patented July 28, 1908.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LIDEI E. HIGGINS, a citizen of the United States, residing in New York, borough of Manhattan, county and State of New York, have made a new and useful Invention in Broom-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is directed particularly to a novel means for holding or securing a'broom in place against a door, wall, or other means of support, and itrhas for its objects, first, to provide a holder of this nature which shall be cheap, simple, and efficient. Second, to provide a holder of this nature which may be readily attached to or detached from its ermanent means of support and which wil retain the head of the broom in perfect shape. Third, to provide a holder of this nature with means for sustaining a dust-pan or dustcloth, or both.
- My invention will be fully understood .by referring to the accompanying drawings, in which, i
Figure 1 is a front elevational View thereo showing the same attached to a door or other means of support, said holder being partlybroken away for the purpose of illustrating the means for hanging it to the door or support, and also showin the broom in place. Fig. 2 is a longitudina sectional View taken through the body of the holder, illustrating the broom and the door or means of support in side elevational view.
Referring now to the drawings in detail A represents the handle and B the head of an ordinary broom and H represents as awhole my novel form of broom holder or support, the same being preferably made of pressed metal and having the conformation or shape of the broom head B, said holder being open at its back for the reception of the broom and provided at its lower end with an opening I for retaining the handle in position when the holder is closed against a door or rigid means of support D. This holder is formed preferably of pressed metal and is provided around its outer edge with a strengthening bead which incloses a continuouswire W, said wire being bent back and forth uponitself and outward at the upper end so as to constitute a hook E, and around the lower end of the opening I and outward so as to constitute a second hook F, these hooks serving the purpose of supporting any article of household use ordinarily utilized in connection with a broom, as, for instance, a dust-pan on one and a dust-cloth upon the other.
G represents a metallic hinge having one edge bent around a portion of the wire W and provided with slotted screw-holes K, K, K for receiving flat-headed screws J, J, adapted to detachably secure the holder to the door or support D. v The 0 posite ends of the wire W approach each ot er at points approximately opposite the hinge G, and the continuation of the bead therearound constitutes a sliding means of Sn port for a wire catch C which serves also t e function of a handle or means of turning the holder H about its hinged point of support G. P represents a locking screw or pin for securing the catch 0.
, In using this improved holder to secure and protect a broom, the catch C is moved into the up or position indicated in dotted. lines, there y releasing the holder, after which it is rotated about the hinge G a sufficient distance to permit of the insertion of the broom head B with the handle A extending downward through the opening I. The holder and broom are then turned until the outer or beaded edge rests firmly against the door or support D, after which the catch C is moved to its lower or locked position behind the pin P.
I am aware that it is not broadly new with me to provide a broom holder which retains the conformation or shape of a broom head and to hang or support such a holder from a fixed point, as a nail or screw, attached to a door or wall, and I make no claim hereinafter broad enough to include such a structural device.
Having thus described my invention what I claim anddesire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is '1. As an article of manufacture a pressed metal broom holder having the conformation of the headof a broom and provided with a bead extending around its outer rim, said bead inclosing a continuous stiffening wire which is bent outward at the opposite ends of the holder to constitute a means of support for additional articles, substantially as described.
22. As an article ofmanufacture a pressed metal broom-holder open at its back and provided with a strengthening bead extending name to this specification in the presence of around its outer edge and inclosing a contwo subscribing witnesses. tinuous wire; 'a hinge secured to said wire on a LIDEI E. HI I 8. one side and a. sliding catch secured within GG the bead on the other side, substantially as Witnesses: desenbed. EDWARD R. WILLIAMS,
In testimony whereof I have signed my C.ED1TII HIGGINS.
