UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.4
ALFRED SWANSON, OF ALBUQUERQUE, TERRITORY OF NEW MEXICO.
BUTTON.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, ALFRED SwANsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Albuquerque, in the county of Bernalillo and Territory of New Mexico, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buttons, and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in detachable buttons.
The object of the invention is to provide a button of this character in the construction of vwhich is arranged a picture, symbol, or other device adapted to be dis layed beneath a transparent covering w ich forms the top or outer side of the button.
l/Vith thisobject in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a plan view of a button constructed in accordancewith the invention, Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same; Fig. 3 is a plan view of the reverse side of the button Fig. 4 is a plan view of the blank from which the button is formed; Fig. 5 is a similar view of the transparent cover which forms the outer side of the button; Fig. 6 is a vertical sectional view of the button showing a modified construction of shank or attaching device whereby the button is secured in the button hole of a coat lapel, Fig. 7 is a erspective view of the fastening device or s ank shown in Fig. 6; and Fig. 8 is a perspective view of a modified form of the button.
Referring more particularly to Figs. l to 5 of the drawings, 1 denotes a button, which consists of a body portion, 2, formed of sheet metal having on two of its opposite edges integrally formed shank attaching fiaps, 3 and 4, which are adapted to be bent or folded over onto the back or rear side of the body portion, 2, the flap, 3, being adapted to overlap the iiap, 4. In forming the flaps, 3 and 4, the edges of the same are cut inwardly or obliquely to form right-angular corners, 5, which are adapted to be bent over upon the outer side of the body portion,

2, to hold the covering plate of the button in place.
In the outer end of the iiap, 4, is formed a rectangular notch, 6, with which is adapted to be engaged the stem of an attaching device, 7, which is shown in the first figures of the drawing as consisting of a head, 8, which is arranged between the folded iiap, 4, and the adjacent side of the body portion, 2, with the stem, 9, of the shank engaging the notch 6 in said fiap. Said shank is held in the notch 6 and the shank thus secured to the button by means of the flap, 3, which overlaps the flap, 4, and has its edge engaging the stem 9, as shown. On the edge of the stem 9, are hingedly connected spring metal fastening members, 10, the inner ends of which have a pivoted cam engagement with the end of the stem, 9, and are adapted to be turned thereon in opposite directions to form a retaining 'device by which the button is secured in the button hole.
Arranged on the outer side or surface of the body portion 2 is a transparent plate, l2, which is preferably formed of Celluloid and corresponds to the shape ofthe body of the button, the corners of the plate being cut off as shown. The plate 12 is retained in position on the body portion 2 of the button by means of the inwardly bent corners 5 of said body portion and between said transparent plate and the outer side of the button, is adapted to be placed a picture which may be in the form of a photograph or print of a person, or a symbol or insignia of an order or lodge.
In Figs. 6 and 7 of the drawings is shown a modified form of shank or attaching device, the saine being shown in this instance as formed from a strip of sheet metal bent midway between its ends to form a iiattened, loop-shaped head, 13, which is adapted to be engaged with the notch 6 in the flap, 4, of the button, and is held therein by means of the fastening flap, 3, in the same manner as described in connection with the fastening device, 7. The flap 3 is bound down into engagement with the flap, 4, by means of the corners, 14, of the flap, 4, which are bent inwardly upon the outer side of the flap, 3, as shown. The outwardly extending ends l5 of the fastening device shown in Figs. 6 and 7 are preferably tapered from the body portion toward their outer ends and are adapted to be engaged with the button hole in the flap of the coat or other article to which the button is to be applied, after which said ends 15 are bent laterally in opposite directions, thus securely holding the button in place. y
In Fig. 8 of the drawing is shown a slightly modified form of button, 16, the body of whichis constructed in the same manner as shown and described in connection with the first igures of the drawing. The button 16 as shown in Fig. S is provided with a perfectly plain finishing plate, 17, for the outer surface of the body portion, 2, said plate being formed of a suitable two-ply material, which is preferably in the form of a rubber composition. The plate is adapted to be secured to the outer side of the body portion 2 by means of the inwardly bent corners, 5, which are inserted between the layers forming the plate, 17, the corners of said plate be ing cut o'll to facilitate the engagement of the inwardly bent corners, 5, between the layers of the plate.
Having thus fully-described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1. A button of the character` described having a body portion, an integrally formed overlapping shank, securing flaps arranged on the opposite edges of said body portion, a'
button attaching shank secured to the button by said naps, a covering plate arranged on the outer side of the body portion, and means formed by the corners of said button portion to retain said covering plate in place, substantially as described.
2. A button of the character described, comprising a body portion, integrally formed shank securing flaps arranged on the opposite edges of said body portion, one of said flaps having formed therein a shank engaging notch, a button attaching shank secured to the reverse side of said body portion by said securing flaps, a covering plate arranged on the outer side of said body portion of the' button, and means to secure said covering plate in place, substantially as described.
3. A button of the character described,
portion whereby a picture or other device r may be protected and secured in place upon the outer side of the body portion of the button, and means formed by the inwardly bent corners of said body portion to retain said cover plate in place, substantially as described.
4. A button of the character described comprising a body portion, integrally formed shank attaching flaps formed on the opposite edges of said body portion, a shank secured to the button by said flaps, said shank being constructed from a single piece of sheet metal bent to form a centrally disposed head engaged by the flaps on the body portion of the button, and outwardly projecting attaching members adapted to be engaged with a button hole to retain the button in place, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto se my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
y ALFRED SWANSON. Vlfitnesses:
