To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY A. Knox, a citizen of the United States, residing at Waello, in the county of Louisa and State of owa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Fan Attachments for Rocking-Chairs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to an improvement in automatic fan attachments for rocking chairs, and has for its object the provision of means for attaching a fan to a rocking chair,whereby when said chair is rocked, the fan will be swung for creating a current of air.

With this and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.

Referring to the drawings by numerals, 1 designates a rocking chair of any preferred type, to which is secured the standard 2. The standard 2 is, preferably, provided with elongated slots or apertures 3, whereby any suitable fastening means, as for instance, bolt 4 may be positioned in one of said slots for attaching the same to the chair 1. It will be obvious that any suitable fastening means may be positioned within both'of said slots for preventing any rotary movement of the standard 2 upon the chair. The bolt 4 is provided with an ordinary nut so that the nut may be loosened upon the bolt and the standard adjusted to any desired. position and then secured in the adjustedposition. It will, therefore, be seen that I have provided means for adjustably securing the standard 2 upon a support, the support being constituted by the chair 1.

The fan supporting-arm 5 is provided intermediate its ends with a loop or eye 6, and at its inner end with an eye or loop 7. Any suitable fastening means, as for instance, a nail or tack 8, extends through the eye or loop 7 erably, longer than the inner portion 1.0 and.

terminates in, preferably, a right-angled ex tension 12, which extension 12 is integral with the finger 13. An ordinary fan 14 has its handle positioned, preferably, above and transversely of portions 10 and 10, and the finger 13 is positioned above the handle at right-angles thereto, whereby the fan 14 is securely clamped between the portions 10 and 10 and the finger 13 of the clamp. It will be obvious that the operator can easily twist the outer end of the arm 5 for placing the fan in any desired position. The angle pendulum 15 comprises a primary portion 16 and auxiliary portions 17, the portions 16 and 17 being connected at their contiguous ends by a loop or eye 18, within which is positioned suitable fastening means, as for instance, a tack or nail 19, whereby the pendulum 15 is pivotally secured to the standard 2. At the lower end of the portion 16, a Weight 20 is secured. The outer end of portion 17 is provided with a loop or eye 21, within which is secured the lower hooked end 22 of the connecting link 23. The upper hooked end 24 of the connecting link is positioned within the eye or loop 6 of the fan-supporting arm 5.

Referring to the drawings, it will be noted that when the chair 1 is rocked, the weighted endulum will swing. upon its pivot, constituted by the fastening means 19, which will reciprocate the connecting link 23 vertically and thereby swing the fan supporting arm in a vertical plane, producing a reciprocating movement of the fan 14, whereby a current of air will be created, which, if a person is sitting in the chair will create a pleasant sensation. If a person is sitting in the chair and wishes to cease fanning, by a forward motion of the chair, the fan automatically rises to a vertical position and locks itself, Fig. 4, so as not to interfere with sitting down or getting up from the chair. When it is desired to p ace the fan attachment in operation, it will only be necessary to draw the arm 5 downward, which will immediately start the fan in motion. l

- What I claim is:

1. A fan attachment 'for rocking chairs, comprising a standard with an enlarged portion having a plurality of separate longitudinal elongated slots therein, a pendulum bent at right-angles to provide a weighted vertical portion, and a horizontal portion having a terminal eye and an eye at the intersection of the vertical and horizontal portions to pivot the pendulum to said standard, a fan holder having one end ivote'd to the upper end of the standard an having an eye adj acent to its pivot, a link having hooks on opposite ends which serve to detachably connect the same to the eye adjacent to the pivot of the holder and the eye on the terminal of the horizontal portion of the pendulum, and said link serving to operate the fan holder and also swing the vertical weighted portion substantially as specified.

A fan-holder for fan attachments, comprising a strip of wire having a plurality of eyes formed on one end, thereof, and arranged at suitable distances apart a clamp on the other end of the holder formed by bending the wire in U-shape to provide a plurality of parallel supportingarms, said wire being also bent and arranged parallel there:

with to rovide a finger which extends be yond and over the bends of the supporting arms, said finger serving to clamp a fan in contact with the arms, so that the fan will extend horizontally outwardly beyond said arms, substantially as described.

3. A fan attachment for rocking chairs, comprising a standard, a pendulum bent at right-angles to provide a weighted, vertical portion and a horizontal portion having a terminal eye and an eye at the intersection 'of the vertical and horizontal portions to pivot the pendulum to said standard, a fan holder having one end pivoted to the upper end of the standard and having an eye adjacent to its pivot, and a link having hooks on opposite ends which serve to detachably connect the same to the eye adjacent to the pivot of the holder and the eye on the terminal of the horizontal'portion of the pendu- 'lum.
