Description

0. BRUECK.
Improvement in Rocking Chair Fan-Attachment. N0. 132,245. Patented 0ct. 15,172.
OTTO BRUEOK, OF UNION HILL, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN ROCKING-CHAIR FAN-ATTACHMENTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 132,245, dated October 15,1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OTTO BRUEOK, of Union Hill, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, haveinvented a new and Improved Fanning Attachment to Rocking-Chairs and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear7 and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, which drawing represents a side view of my attachment as applied to a rocking chair.
This invention consists in a clamp made to fit the back of a rocking-chair, and provided with an arm running transversely to the back of the chair and forming the bearings for two levers, one of which carries a weight and the other afan, and which are connected together in such a manner that when the chair is set in a rocking, motion an oscillating motion is imparted to the weighted lever, which motion being transmitted to the fan-lever produces a current of air suficient to cool the person occupying the chair and to chase away iiies or mosquitoes.
In the drawing, the letter A designates a clamp provided with a set-screw, c, and so constructed that it can readily be secured t0 the back of a rocking-chair. From this clamp extends a bracket, b, in the outer end of which is secured a rod, B, which extends across the back of the chair and at right angles to the same. In the rear end of said rod B is secured a lever, C, which swings on a fulcrumpin, c, and on the lower end of which is secured a weight, D. The upper end of said lever extends some distance above the fulcrum c, and it connects, by a rod, E, with a lever, F, which has its fulcrum on a pin, e, secured in the front end of the rod B. To the lower end of this lever F is secured a fan, G, while its upper end extends a short distance above the fnlcrum-pin e and connects with the rod E, so that a comparatively small motion of the weight D will impart a large oscillation to the fan Gr.
If my attachment is securedto the back of a rocking-chair, and the person occupying said chair begins to rock, an oscillating motion is imparted to the weight D, and, since this motion is transmitted to the fan G, a current of air is thrown down on the person occupying the chair.
If desired, the rod E can be connected to the fan-lever F in such a manner that when the weight swings in and the fan is swung out to its extreme position it will be released and caused to iy in by means of a sprn g, and the same if the weight swings out away from the back of the chair, so that for every complete oscillation of the weight two complete oscillations of the fan are produced, and consequently the current of air is proportionately increased.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The clamp A with its supporting-rod B, in
combination with a weighted lever, C, a fanlever, F, and a rod, E, connecting said two levers, substantially in the manner show n and described.
OTTO BRUEOK.
