SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 588,282, dated August 17, 1897.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CLARENCE EDsoN MAYO, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State 0f Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fans, of which thevfollowing is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to makeand use the same.

This invention relates to fan attachments for rocking-chairs; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which may be quickly and easily connected with the back of a rocker or one of the sides thereof and which is designed to support a fan above the chair in such manner that the fan will swing back and forth over the occupant of the chair in the operation thereof.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which theaccompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is a front View of one -side of the back of a rocking-chair, showing my improved fan attachment connected 'therewith and supporting the fan; Fig. 2, a side view thereof -with the fan detached; Fig. 3, an enlarged side View of the attachment or that portion thereof by which the same is connected with the chair and showing the connecting devices; Fig. 4, a side View of an arm which supports the fan, which forms afpart of the attachment; Fig. 5, a front view of a hanger which is adapted to be connected therewith; Fig. 6, an edge view thereof; Fig. 7, an edge view of a clamp for supporting the fan and showing means for connecting it with the hanger;

Fig. 8, a front View thereof; Fig. 9, a side view of a modified form of device for connecting the fan with the arm of the support; Fig. 10, a bottom plan view thereof, and Fig. 11 a plan view ofl a clamp by which the attachment is connected with the chair.

In the drawings forming part of this specication theseparate parts of myimprovement are designated by numerals of reference, and in said drawings I have shown at 5 one side of the back of a rocking-chair, which may be of any desired form or construction, and in the practice of my invention I provide a fansupport which is adapted to be connected therewith and which is of the following construction: The main part of the fan-support tively, Athe arm 9 being provided with a circular or segmental head 10, and the arm 8 being provided with a screw-threaded bolt 1l, which passes therethrough and which is also provided with a circular or segmental head 12, which is adapted to'operate, in connection with the head 10 of the arm 9, to clamp the back 0f the chair, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and the opposite end of the bolt 11 is provided with a knob or handle 13.

The cross-head 7 of the clamp is provided with a depending arm 14, and pivot-ally connected with said cross-head at 15 isatriangular plate 16,in the lower side of which is formed a circular or segmental slot 17, through which passes a set-screw 18, which enters a corresponding screw-threaded opening in the lower end of the arm 14 of the cross-head 7, and the plate 16 is provided at its outer side with a vertical head 19, through which passes a vertical bore 20, through which the rod 6 is passed, and said head 19 is provided with a set-screw 21, by which said rod may be held in any desired position, and by means of this construction the angle of the rod 16 may be changed or adjusted as desired, it being understood that said rod issupported by the triangular plate 16, which is pivoted at 15, and that the position of said plate` may be adjusted byl .means of the set-screw 18, which works in the therewith at 23, and said rodj 22 is curved over forwardly and provided with a horizontal arm 24, which is provided with a screwthreaded extension 25, and at a predetermined distance from the end thereof is a collar 26, and the screw-threaded extension 25 is provided with a detachable thumb or end nut 27. I also provide a hanger which is adapted to be connected with the arm 24 of the supplemental rod 22, and this hanger consists of a rod 28, which is provided at its upper end with outwardly-directed'side arms 29, each of which is provided at its outer end with a ring or eye 30, through which the arm 24 of the supplemental rod is adapted to be passed,

and the hanger is held on said arm by the thumb or end nut 27, and said han gcris adapted to swing on said arm, as will be readily understood.

The rod 28 of the handle is provided at its lower end with two parallel arms 31, which are connected at their lower ends by a short tube 32, in one side of which is formed avertical slot 33, and I also provide a clamp with which the fan is adapted to be directly connected, said clamp being shown in Figs. 7 and 8, and consisting of two similar springoperated jaws 34, which are pivotally connected at 35, and each of which is provided with a projecting frame 3G, each of said frames consisting of two outwardly and downwardly directed arms 37, the outer ends of which are connected by two curved or circular rods 38.

One of the jaws 34 is provided with an arm 39, at the end of which is a cylindrical head 40, which is provided at one side with a pin or projection 4l and at its outer end with an annular shoulder or rim 42, and by pressing the jaws 34, or the ends thereof adjacent to the arm 39, together the frames, consisting of the arms 37 and the curved or circular rod 38, may be separated and a fan 43 inserted between the same, as clearly shown in Fig. 1.

In connecting the clamp with the hanger 29 the head 40 of the arm 39 is passed between the arms 3l of the hanger, and in this operation the arm 39 passes through the slot 33 in the short tube 32, and when the clamp is released the head 40 of the arm 39 drops down into the said tube 32, the pin 41 entering the slot 33 therein, and the annular shoulder or rim 42 of the head 40 will rest on the top of said tube, this position of the parts being clearly shown in Fig. 1.

Vhen thus supported, the fan will be free to swing back and forth over the chair as the latter is rocked back and forth, and in Figs. 9 and l0 I have shown a modified form of attachment for connecting the fan with the hanger. In this form of construction I employ a tube 44, which is preferably thicker at one side than at the other, and connected with one end thereof is the arm 39, which is the same as the arm 39 which is connected with the clamp shown in Figs. 7 and 8 and which is also provided with the head 40, and the tube 44 is provided with a set-screw 45, and when this form of attachment is employed any desired form of a fan, such as a palm-leaf fan or other fan of that class, may be connected therewith by passing the handle upwardly into the tube 44 and securin g it therein by the set-screw 45.

Either of the attaching devices-namely, that shown in Figs. 7 and 8 or that shown in Figs. 9 and lO-may be used in connection with the hanger, which is shown in Figs. 5 and 6, and when either is used the fan will be free to swing back and forth over the chair, as will be readily understood.

One of the jaws 34 of the fan-holder shown in Fig. 8 is provided with an outwardly-directed extension or blade 4G, which is designed to enter between the separate pivoted parts of the fan, handle, or head to keep the fan in position and prevent it from moving laterally or otherwise within the frame or holder, and it will thus be seen that I accomplish the object of my invention by means of a device which is simple in construction and operation and which is also comparatively inexpensive and which may be quickly and easily attached to the back or the side of the back of a rocking-chair of almost any construction.

IIaving fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. In a fan attachment for rocking-chairs the same comprising the combination with the back of a chair or the side thereof of a suitable support which is secured thereto by a clamp consisting of a cross-head which is provided with arms at the opposite ends thereof, one of said arms being provided with a segmental head, the other arm being provided with a screw-threaded bolt which passes therethrough, said bolt being provided with a segmental head adapted to operate in connection with the segmental head of the first arm, said bolt being provided at the free end with a knob or handle, said cross-head being also provided with a depending arrn and a triangular plate pivotally connected to said crosshead having a segmental slot in the lower side thereof, a screw-threaded opening in said depending arm and a set-screw secured therein and adapted to engage the said segmental slot, said triangular plate being also provided with a vertical head having a vertical bore therein adapted to receive the fan-supportin g rod, and a set-screw to engage the same, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. In a fan attachment for rocking-chairs, the combination with a suitable support of a rod 28 provided with side arms 29 having eyes 30 adapted to engage said support and turn thereon, said rod 23 being provided with two arms 3l, connected by a short tube 32 having a vertical slot 33; a clamp consisting of two springoperated jaws 34 pivotally connected at 35, and each being provided with a projecting frame 36, each of which consists of two arms 37 connected by curved rods 38, one of said jaws being provided with an arm 39, having a cylindrical head 40 provided with a pin 4l, and rim 42, substantially as shown and described and for the purpose set forth.
