FAN ATTACHMENT FOR ROCKING FURNITURE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 336,128, dated February 16, 1886.

Be it known that we, ARTHUR W. MoCoMAs and HENRY A. FITZHUGH, citizens of the United States, residing at Austin ,in the county of Travis and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fans to be Applied to Rocking Furniture; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon,whieh form a part of this specification.

Our invention is an improvement in fans and devices for securing the same to rockingehairs and other rocking furniture. The fan, the essential feature of our invention, hangs, in its normal position, from two horizontal arms which are supported by upright stanchions, said arms and stanchions being braced and held together by bracing-arms secured by suitable metallic hinge-eonnections, by which the angle formed between said horizontal arms and upright stanchions may be increased or reduced to raise or lower the fan, as required, to bring it nearer to or more distant from the occupant of the rocking furniture. The frame of the fan, composed of the upright stanchions and horizontal bars chiefly, is held together by two lateral horizontal bars secured to the horizontal bars which support the fan permanently, or by some suitable means by which they may be readily detached. The fan is intended to swing from hooks fixed in the ends of the horizontal arms, and move back and forth as the rocker to which the frame is secured moves back and forth, propelled by the movement of the occupant.

In our drawings which accompany and form a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the fan-frame and fan. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the fan as applied to a rocking-chair. Fig. 3 is a detail drawing, showing the clamping device for securing the fan-frame to the rocker.

E E are upright stanchions, provided at their bottom ends with adjnstingdisks, to be hereinafter fully described.

A are arms, in horizontal position normally, which are connected to the uprights E E by hinged joints F F, to provide for change to the angles formed by the conjunction of the parts E and A.

E E are the diagonal bracing-rods, secured to the horizontal arms A by stationary hingejoints H, and to the upright stanchions E by hinge-j oints D, with sleeves adapted to slide up and down upon the stanchions,upon any point of which they may be fixed by suitable clamping-screws. The angle formed by the uprights E and horizontals A may be changed to suit circumstances by means of said braces E and the clamping-screws provided for the sliding sleeves. Staying bars or braces F F are secured, either adj ustably or permanently, to the arms A by suitable joint-fastenings. At the ends of the horizontal arms A are provided hooks I, upon which is hung, by suitable eyes, the fan J. The fan J is composed of any fabric, fibrous or textile, stretched preferably upon a frame of wire, the upper horizontal portion of which is provided with eyes to catch onto the hooks I of the horizontal arms A, and the lower portion of said fan is pro vided with a weighted balancing-bar, K, to steady the movement of the said fan. The rod or bar E is provided with a sleeve, G, with a hook or eye, and a clamping-screw, and to the said eye or hook is secured a cord or wire, h, which latter is also secured to the gravity or balancing bar K. By means of this wire or cord the movement of the fan may be limited or held to a fixed position when it is not re quired to be moved.

The device for securing the fan-frame to the piece of furniture may be described as follows: A is a forked clamping device, provided with a rubber plate, a, on one side, and on the 0p- 9 posite side with aplate, I), of metal, and one, 0, of rubber. Both of the latter are secured and held to place by the clamping-screw (1. Above the clamp described is a fixed disk, 6, and opposite to it are disks f, secured to the stanchions E. A clamping-screw, 9, holds the two disks together at desired points with relation to each other, and also to the rocking piece of furniture to which the clamping device is intended to be secured.

The clamping device 0, as shown in the drawings, is intended to be secured to the upper bracing-bar of a chair-back, the screw d being adjusted to force the parts a c b in close contact with the said bar.

It may be readily seen that by the adj usting-screw g the fan-frame may be adjusted and held to any position with reference to the chair, and by means of the clamping-slide D the fan maybe adj usted and held to any position desirable.

We are aware of the patent to Engle, No. 276,791, which shows double clamping-disks, with their planes at right angles to each oth er, and to such we make no claim.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is-

1. The combination, with the fan-frame and fan, sleeve G, cord h, and the rocker, of the double clamping device for uniting the fanframe to the rocker, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. The combination, with the frame forming the fan-support, of the fan J, sliding sleeve G, and the connecting cord or wire 71, as and for the purpose set forth.
