ADJUSTABLE SANDBOX CANOPY Filed May 28, 1957 INVENTOR KENNETH E. HASELTON ATTORNEY ADJUSTABLE SANDBOX CANOPY Kenneth E. Haselton, Athol, Mass., assignor to The N. D. Cass Company, Athol, Mass., a corporation of Massachusetts Application May 28, 1957, Serial No. 662,105
Claims. c1. 135-5 This invention relates to an adjustable sandbox cover or canopy although the invention may be applied to other relationships as for instance to wading pools, childrens playpens, orthe like.
The principal object of the invention resides in the provision of a relatively simple and easily adjusted construction providing a cover for the sandbox to keep prowlers out, for instance during the night-time, and also to provide a rain and sun parasol or cover, the construction comprising a pair of uprights which are secured to the sandbox at corresponding corners at one edge thereof, and there being a pivoted linkon each upright intermediate the ends thereof, said links pivotally mounting the cover itself at their opposite ends at points inter-mediate of the lengths of the side edges of the cover, together with detachable fastening means at an edge of the cover for securement to the uprights near the upper ends thereof, whereby the cover is quickly and easily mounted in horizontal position directly over the sandbox, being supported by the links, and spaced vertically from the box, to form a sunshade or the like, and by detaching the fasteners from the uprights, the entire cover is swingable, while being maintained generally horizontal, to a position directly upon the sandbox, covering the same throughout the entire area thereof.
Further objects of the invention include modifications and variations and specifically means for holding the cover at various angles with respect to the sandbox to provide a shade against sun in morning and afternoon; and provision for holding the cover with one edge in the sandbox at an edge thereof so that the cover is generally inclined with respect to the sandbox and acts as a wind screen for the occupant of the sandbox, wading pool, etc.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear hereinafter.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, in which Fig, 1 is a perspective view illustrating the invention;
Fig. 2 is a view showing the sandbox in closed relatron;
Fig. 3 is a view in side elevation showing the cover tilted; and
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3 but showing the cover in a different position.
In carrying out the invention, the same is applied for instance to a receptacle generally indicated at 10. This receptacle is shown as rectangular and is provided with supporting legs if desired. The receptacle may form.
a sandbox, wading pool or playpen or similar device for the amusement of a child.
Adjacent corresponding corners of the rectangular body 10, there are provided a pair of spaced uprights 12 and 14. These uprights may 'be secured to the receptacle in any way desired as by bolting to the sides thereof or to the legs if present.
Intermediate the ends of the uprights 12 and 14, there a United States Patent 0 is pivotally mounted on each a link 16 or 18. These links are pivotally secured at their ends to the respective upright, and at their other ends the links 16, 18 are pivotally secured to side edge rods or bars 20, 22, which bars support the cover generally indicated at 24. This cover may be of any desired construction and is conveniently formed with a pair of rods extending between the respective ends of side edge bars 20 and 22 with a canvas material secured between the same.
The rods or bars 2022 are each provided with a series of holes 26 adjacent corresponding ends thereof as clearly shown in Figs. land 3, and the top portions of the uprights are provided with dowel-pins, studs, or other similar devices 28 which are inwardly directed and face toward each other for selective entry in corresponding pairs of holes 26, in order to support the cover in the position as shown in Figs. 1 and 3.
In Fig. 1, the cover is shown as horizontal, but merely by detaching the dowel-pins 28 by springing theuprights outwardly slightly, these dowels 28 may be entered into either of the other pair of holes 26 providing for the adjusted slanted disposition of the cover as shown in i Fig. 3 to ward off sunlight in morning or afternoon.
When the pins 28 are disengaged from the holes 26, the entire cover may be swung downwardly on the links 16, 18 from the Fig. 1 to the Fig. 2 position. In the latter position, the cover maintains the sandbox completely covered and safe from prowlers and from entry of dirt, rain, etc., and it will be seen that this action is an easy one to accomplish and does not require strength or undue exertion in order to carry it out or to bring the cover back to the Fig. 1 position.
Referring now to Fig. 4, it will be seen that the cover, when detached from pins 28, may be swung downwardly to the right and the forward edge thereof which is indicated at 30 may be lodged in the corner of the sandbox opposite the uprights. The links 16, 13 hold the cover in the position shown in Fig. 4 wherein it acts as a complete wind-screen'because it covers the entire side or front portion of the sandbox from the bottom of the box to a point high enough to completely protect a child playing in it.
Having thus described my invention and the advantages thereof, I do not wish to be limited to the details herein disclosed, otherwise than as set forth in the claims, but what I claim is:
l. A childs amusement device comprising an open topped receptacle body, a coextensive cover therefor,
swung whereby the cover is movable bodily verticallybetween positions directly upon the receptacle body to close it and vertically spaced therefrom for a rain and sun shield, and means detachably securing the cover to the uprights at points spaced from the links holding the cover parallel to the receptacle body.
2. The device of claim 1 wherein said detachable securing means for the cover include selective means arranged along the opposite side edges of the cover and adapted to hold the same in various angular positions of adjustment relative to the body.
3. The device of claim 1 wherein said detachable means includes pins on the uprights and a series of holes in the side edges of the cover, said pins selectively receiving the holes in corresponding pairs.
4. A childs amusement device comprising an open topped rectangular receptacle body, a coextensive cover therefor, and a support for the cover, said support ineluding a pair of uprights on the body at corresponding corners thereof, a swinging link on each upright intermediate the ends thereof, said cover being pivotally secured to and, between the links at points intermediate the ends of the side edges of the cover, and the links being free to be swung in parallelvertical planes'whereby the cover is movable bodily vertically between horizontal positions directly upon the receptacle body to close it and vertically spaced therefrom, and detachable connections for the cover adjacent the ends of the side edges to the top portions of the uprights, said connections comprising inter-engaging apertures and pins axially enterable in the apertures.
5; A childs amusement device comprising an open topped rectangular receptacle body, a coextensive cover therefor, and a support for the cover, said support including a pair of uprights on the body at corresponding corners thereoha swinging link on each upright intermediate the ends thereof, said cover being pivotally secured to and between the links at points intermediate the ends of the side edges of the cover, and the links being free to be swung in parallel vertical planes whereby the cover is movable bodily vertically between horizontal positions directly upon the receptacle body to References Cited in the file of this patent UNITED STATES PATENTS 356,128v McComas et a1; Feb. 16, 1886 536,131 Coldwell et a1.
