Description

No. 893,845. PATENTED JULY 21, 1908.
A. P. HERRINGTON. CONVERTIBLE SEA-T.
APPLIOATION FILED NOV. 7, 1907.
Wzi'ffiekrses I liwkq kkyza ALEXANDER POLK HERRINGTON, OF ATLANTA, GEORGIA.
CONVERTIBLE SEAT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 21, 1908.
Application filed November '7, 1907. Serial No. 401,096.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER POLK HERRINGTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Convertible Seat, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new and original idea, for the converting of a suit case or similar package into a comfortable seat; and the object of my said improvement is to provide a cheap and inexpensive method by which travelers on crowded cars, or waiting for trains, cars, boats, or otherthings incident to travel, may convert their burdensome baggage into a comfortable seat.
The preferred form of my invention is illustrated by the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a suit case provided with my convertible seat. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the same with the bottom of the suit case removed. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1 with the side of the suit case removed. Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 1 with a part of the side removed and showing the seat in the extended osition. Fig. 5 is detail view of the seat an related parts.
Fig. 1. represents an ordinary suit case, in which a false bottom has been placed and between which false bottom and rea bottom, an opening is made, and covered by a fia (i) being buckled over ,when desired or use the fla may be opened and a seat as shown inig. (2), may be drawn out and used as such on which to rest.
Fig. 2. represents a view of the folded seat as itappears fastened in the bottom of a suit 40 case, with the top and false bottom removed. The extension frame, (1)) is made of Wood or metal, and any size to fit the different suit cases or packages. The frame is made telescopic-opening and closing through the thimbles (e) and (f) engaging the guides or tracks h and is fastened to the suit case in any manner, by the bottom half of the frame, leaving the top half, on which is hinged, at (d) a light seat (0) of any material, free
to be drawn out by the loop (a) after opening the flap ('11), when the seat (0) naturally drops forward forming a seat, and the frame (b) standing higher, makes a support to the back, and converts the burdensome load-into a comfortable seat on which to rest.
Fig.- 3. represents a side view of the seat closed, and resting between the false bottom (g) and the real bottom of the suit case. To bring the device into use, the flap i is opened, the loop a. is grasped and the frame I) is pulled out until the seat (1. drops forward on the hinge a, forming a seat and back.
Fig. 4. represents a side view of the seat opened up or extended, showing also the bottom half of the frame (it) as firmly fixed to the suit case and the thimbles (e) and (f) drawn up with (1)) thereby bracing and strengthening the back.
Fig. 5. represents exactly the same extension frame, with seat attached as shown by Fig. (2), to be operated and used in the same way, except that by the use of hooks and straps (j) the frame and seat may be attached to any suit case, whether originally designed for the seat attachment, or not, by hooking the folded or closed frame, to the bottom section of any suit case from the outside. a
Having thus fullydescribed my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A portable seat comprising a traveling case in combination with a plurality of guides and means to secure the same to the traveling case, of a back rest mounted to slide upon said guides, and a seat member hinged to the back rest, adapted to open out and form a seat when the back rest is extended.
, 2. In a convertible seat, the combination with a traveling case or the like, provided with a double bottom, and a plurality of guides or-tracks secured within said double bottom, of a back member slidably mounted on said guides or tracks and adapted to extend beyond said traveling case, and a seat member hinged to said back member, adapted to swing downward and rest on the exterior of the said case when the back member is extended.
3. The combination with a traveling case having a double bottom open at one end and I the back member is in the outward position, a folding seat attachment adagted to be the two members forming a seat.
wholly contained within said dou 1e bottom, T comprising a back member mounted to move ALEXMDER POLK HERKINGTM in and out of said double bottom and a seat Witnesses:
member hinged to the back member and D. G. PEEL, adapted to swing outward therefrom, when W. T. JUSTIN.
