To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEVI PHYLANDER HAR- RIs, a citizen of the United States, residing at- Clay Center, in the county of Clay and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Heater for Incubators, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to heaters for incubators and more particularly to heaters of that type in which hot water is used as a heating medium. Devices of this character usually consist of a boiler having a passage therethrough for the reception of hot gases from a lamp and the top of this assage is designed to be opened or closed y a thermostatically controlled cap. When the interior of the incubator becomes too warm this cap automatically opens the passage so that the products of combustion can pass therethrough and not be confined within the passage as when the cap is lowered. It has been found, however, that when the cap is opened the products of combustion while passing through the passage in the boiler continue, more or less, to heat the water contained within the boiler and therefore the temperature of the water is not reduced as quickly as desired.
The object of the present invention is to overcome this disadvantage by providing means whereby, when the ca \is opened, the products of combustion wil pass directly through the heater without coming into contact with the boiler or further heating the water contained therein.
Another object is to provide means whereby the products of combustion will be directed against the boiler only when the cap is closed.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings is shown the preferred form of the invention.

An outlet pipe 5 and a return pipe 6 communicates with the interior of the boiler there being a deflector 7 within the boiler for directing water from the return pipe downward toward An inlet 8 is formed in the top of the boiler and is provided with a movable closure 9. The boiler is designed to be filled through this opening 8.
A cylindrical jacket 10 surrounds the greater portion of the boiler and is spaced therefrom and secured thereto by means of arms 11 disposed at desired intervals. This jacket extends u ward from a base ring 12 which extends be ow the boiler and projecting upward from the ring and into the passage 2 is a frusto-conical guard tube 13 having a covering 14 of asbestos or other heat resisting material which extends throughout the extent of its outer or convex surface. The guard tube terminates adjacent the top of the boiler and its upper end is substantially equal in diameter to the outlet end of assage 2. The base ring 12 extends inward from the tube 13 and the opening 15 therein is designed to receive the chimney 16 of the heater. I
When the cap 4 isin its normal position upon flange 3 the products of combustion passing into the device from the chimney 16 flows downward between the guard tube 13 and the wall of passage 2 and thence under the boiler and out between the jacket and boiler. The products of combustion -will therefore come into direct contact with the boiler and uickly raise the temperature of the water tlierein. When the heat within the incubator reaches a predetermined temperature the cap 4 will rise and the products of combustion will pass directly from the chimney 16 through the guard tube 13 and thence through the outlet end of passage 2. The guard tube keeps the products of combustion out of contact with the boiler except at the upper portion thereof and therefore the escaping heat will have practically no action u on the water within the boiler.
