Description
PATENTED VOCT. 1, 1907.
J. W. WHITEIELD.
INCUBATOE- HEATER.
APPLICATION FILED AUG. 9. 1906.
UNITED STATES JAMES WILLIAM' WHITFIELD, OF BIGTIMBER, MONTANA.
- INcUBAToR-HEATER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 1, 1907'.
`.Application filed August 9, 1906. Serial No. 329,913.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES WILLIAM WHITFIELD, a citizen of the United States, 4residing at Bigtimber, in the county of VSweet Grass and State of Montana, have invented certain'new and useful Improvements in Incubator-Heaters, and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in `incuba tor heaters.
The object of the invention is to provide a heating system for incubators, by means of which the heating capacity of the lamp is greatly increased, and by means of which the heat vin the incubator is more readily controlled.
The foregoing and other objects are accomplished by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,-
Figure l is a sectional view through a portion of an incubator, showing the application of the heater thereto; Fig. 2 is an end view of the incubator, showing the boiler of the heater in section; Fig. 3 is a plan view of the heater removed from the incubator.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, l denotes the boiler, which preferably consists of a cylindrical can or tank having in its upper end a filling opening 2, which is normally closed by a suitable plug 3, and at one side, adjacent to the lower end of the tank is arranged a draw-olf cock 4.
Arranged in the boiler 1 is a right-angularly-disposed heat flue 5, said flue opening through one side of the boiler adjacent to the lower end thereof and through the opposite side of the boiler near the upper end thereof. The flue 5 preferably tapers or decreases in size from its inlet opening 6 to its discharge opening 7, whereby the products of combustion will be retained in the flue for a greater length of time than they would should the flue be of the same size throughout, thereby utilizing the heat therefrom to a greater extent in heating the water in the boiler. y
The lamp of the incubator is seated upon a depending bracket 16 at one end of the incubator chamber or compartment 17 and provided with a metallic chimney 8, in one-side of which, adjacent to the lower end thereof is formed a discharge elbow 9, the outer end of which is adapted to be inserted in the outer end of the heat flue 5 of the boiler, whereby the lamp is removable and when the usual damper l0 is lowered into engagement with the top of the chimney, all the products of combustion will pass from the lamp chimney into the flue of the boiler, but when the damper is removed from the upper end of the chimney, all or a portion of the products of combustion will be permitted to escape therefrom, thus quickly lowering the temperature in the incubator, and providing for the more ready control of the same.
Connected to one end of the boiler near the upper side of the same and preferably at right angles to the flue 5 is a water discharge pipe 12, which is connected at its outer end to a rectangular conducting and radiating pipe 14, said pipe 14 increasing in size from its inlet end towardthe opposite end thereof, thereby providing for an equal radiation or distribution of the heat therefrom, this even distribution of the heat being occasioned by the enlarging of the pipes as they extend from the hot water supply pipe, so that the greater quantity of water contained in the larger portion of the pipe compensates for the loss of heat in the water as the same flows from the-boiler through said pipes.
Connected with the conducting pipe at the farther end of the radiating pipe 14 is a centrally-disposed return pipe l5, said pipe being larger at its juncture with the conducting pipe and gradually tapering toward its opposite end where the same connects with the boiler for the return of the water thereto, this end of the pipe being bent to pass beneath the boiler discharge pipe 12, which connects with the radiating and circulating pipe 14. The pipes 12 and 15 project through the end of the incubator and are preferably strong enough to support the boiler without the usual bracket or extension from the end of the incubator.
By providing a heating system for incubators, as hereinbefore described, a more even temperature is provided, so that all parts of the incubator will be heated alike, and by arranging the heat conducting chimney as herein shown and described, the products of combustion from the lamp may be all turned into the boiler heating flue, or all or only a portion thereof turned out of the same, as may be desired, thus providing for the positive and quick control of the heat from the lamp.
The lamp and chimney are located exteriorly of the boiler and entirely independent thereof, except the elbow 9, whereby ready access is had to each separate part, and repair or renewal is more easily effected when necessary. The lamp is also preferably placed about half-way between the filling opening 2, and the pipes l2 and l5, so that the flue 5 crosses the boiler at right-angles to a plane through them, thereby not interfering with the filling of the boiler. It also causes the damper l0 to be located at one side of the top of the boiler so as to be entirely out of the way in filling the boiler, and the discharge opening of the flue 5 is also located at one side of the boiler.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood Without requiring amore extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing `from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages oi this invention, as defined by the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim Ias new, and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is,-
In an incubator, a compartment provided with a support, a hot water pipe in the compartment and having its ends projecting therefrom, a boiler secured to and communieating with the ends of said pipe, said boiler' having a filling opening and provided with a tapering angular passage between said opening and the ends of said pipe and JAMES .WILLTAM Wlll'rlFlELll.
