Description

G. W. YOUNKMAN.
CENTRIFUGAL GOVERNOR. APPLIOATION FILED APE. 30,1907.
UNrrnn .srarns ATENT onnron GEORGE W. YOUNKMAN, OF DENVER, COLORADO.
CEN'IRIFUGAL GOVERNOR.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. YoUNx- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Centrifugal Governors; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in centrifugal governors, my object being to provide an efficient device of thisclass, for automatically regulating the speed of a shaft connected with any suitable mechanism.
The mechanism will now be described in detail reference being made to the accompanying drawing in which is illustrated an embodiment thereof.
In this drawing, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved mechanism. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same partly in section, the flange of the stationary member being partly broken away. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary detail view of one of the tension springs and the regulating stem connected therewith, the parts being shown on a larger scale.
The same reference characters indicate the same parts in all the views.
Let the numeral 5 designate a stationary member having a circular flange 6 whose inner surface is acted on by friction devices 7 connected with the governor mechanism as hereinafter explained. A shaft 8 is so ar ranged that its axis coincides with the axis of the circular flange of the stationary member. This shaft 8 is suitably journaled and connected with the mechanism (not shown) to be controlled by the governor.
Keyed to the shaft 8 whereby it is caused to -rotate therewith is a sleeve 9 which sur- Specification of Letters Patent.

I arms, though the structure is better balanced and will undoubtedly work more smoothly and efficiently where the two pairs of arms are employed. The outer extremity of each arm 10 is provided with two parts 12 and 13 extending in different directions and forming a suitable angle with each other. The two parts 13 of each pair of arms 10, are arranged on opposite sides of one extremity of a lever 14 and are pivotally connected with the same by means of a pin 15 held in place in any suitable'manner as by a cotter 16. The opposite extremity of each lever 14 is provided with a weight 17 connected by means of two links 18, with the outer extremities of two radial arms 19 whose inner extremities are formed integral with collars 20 loosely surrounding the reduced outer extremities of the sleeve 9. The reduction of these sleeve extremities, form shoulders whereby collars 20 together with their arms 19 are suitably spaced. The two levers 14 together with their weights 17 are arranged on opposite sides of the shaft 8, whereby the structure is perfectly balanced. The corresponding extremities of these two levers are also oppositely disposed for the same purpose. The extremity of each lever remote from the weight, is provided with a cam portion 21 adapted to act on a cap screw 22 connected with each friction shoe 7. These friction shoes are curved to conform to the curve of the inner face of the flange 6 of the stationary member 5. Each shoe is provided with a removable wearing member 23 which directly engages the inner face of the flange 6 when the shoes are thrown out against the flange by centrifugal force.
Each shoe 7 is provided with an extension 7 whose extremity remote from the body of the shoe is arranged between the two parts 12 of each pair of radial arms 10, the said extension being connected with the said arms by a pin or key 24. Each extension 7 is also provided with an inwardly projecting lug 7 which is connected with a pin 25 attached to one extremity of a tension spring 26 whose opposite extremity is connected with a pin 27 passing through a finger 28 formed integral with one of the levers 14. This pin passes through the lever finger, its free extremity being threaded and provided with a nut 29 which bears against a washer 30, the latter having a projection 31 entering a recess formed in the finger to prevent the rotation of the washer during the adjustment of the nut. By turning the nut 29 on the screw pin 27 the tension of each spring 26 may be regulated at will, whereby greater or less force would be required in order to cause the friction shoes to engage the inner surface of the rim 6. Each cap screw 22 is adjustable in its friction shoe, with reference to the cam portion of its corresponding lever 14. Each of these screws is also provided with a lock nut 22 for maintaining the screw in any desired position of adjustment.
From the foregoing description the use and operation of my improved centrifugal governor will be readily understood. Assuming that the mechanism to be controlled, but not shown herein, is in operation, whereby the shaft 8 and its connections are rotated, the entire mechanism with the exception of the stationary rim 5 is caused to rotate with the shaft. It must be assumed that the tension of the springs 26 has been properly regulated. N ow when the speed of the shaft has become suificient, the centrifugal force act ing on the weights 17, will move the levers 14 sufficiently to cause their cam portions 21 to act on the screws 22 of the friction shoes, and force the wearing portions 23 of the latter outwardly against the inner face of the flange 6 of the stationary device, thus properly regulating the speed of the shaft.
The sleeve 9 forms a stop to limit the inward movement of the fingers 28 and theirconnections, when the friction shoes are disengaged from the rim 6.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. In a centrifugal governor, the combination with a shaft to be controlled, and a circular stationary member having a friction face, radial arms connected with the shaft, the outer extremities of said arms being provided with two p-arts'forming suitable angles with each other, friction shoes pivotally connected with one of said parts and arranged in suitable proximity to the friction face of the stationary member, weighted levers connected with the other part of said. arm and arranged to act on the friction shoes, a collar passing loosely around the shaft, a link connection between the said collar and the op- 1 posite extremity of the weighted levers, each of the last named levers being provided with inwardly-projecting fingers, and tension means connecting the said fingers with the friction shoes substantially as described.
2. In a centrifugal governor, the combination with a shaft to be controlled, and a circular stationary member having a friction face, radial arms connected with the shaft, the outer extremities of said arms being provided with two parts forming suitable angles with each other, friction shoes pivotally con nected with one of said parts and arranged in suitable proximity to the friction face of the stationary member, weighted levers connected with the other art of said arm and arranged to act on the 'riction shoes, a collar passing loosely around the shaft, a link connection between the said collar and the opposite extremity of the weighted levers, each of the last named levers being provided with inwardly-projecting fingers, springs connecting the said fingers with the friction shoes, and means for regulating the tension of said springs substantially as described. Y
3. In a centrifugal governor, the combination with, an operating shaft and a friction means surrounding the shaft, of a sleeve connected with the shaft to rotate therewith, radial arms rigid with the sleeve and projecting therefrom in opposite directions, the outer extremities of each arm being provided with two parts forming suitable angles with each other, friction shoes pivotally connected with one of said parts, and weighted levers pivotally connected with the other part of said arm, a collar passing loosely around the shaft, a link connection between the said collar and the opposite extremities of the weighted levers, each of the last named levers being provided with an inwardly-projecting finger, and tension springs connecting the said fingers with the friction shoes, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
