Description

' ,(NoModeL) E HUBER GENTRIIEUGAL GOVERNOR.
Patented Feb. 4, 1896.
I mmwcop UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD HUBER, OF MARION, OHIO.
CENTRIFUGAL GOVERNOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.- 553,852, dated February 4, 1896.
' Application filed May 14,1895. Serial No. 549,307. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD HUBER, of Marion, in the-county of Marion and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Centrifugal Governors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in centrifugal governors, and is designed more particularly for controlling the operation of self-feeders for thrashing-machines, the object of the invention being to produce a simple and efiicient governor which shall be so constructed and arranged that the mechanism to be operated will be automatically thrown into action when the driven pulley shall have attained a certain predetermined rate of speed and so that said mechanism will be automatically thrown out of action when the speed of the driven pulley decreases below the predetermined rate.
\Vith this object in view the invention con sists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional view illustrating my improvements. Fig. 2 is a face view with the fast pulley removed.
A represents a shaft, on which a pulley Bis loosely mounted and adapted for the reception of a suitable strap from any convenient source of power and by which said loose pulley B will be driven. A pulley O is keyed to the shaft A in close proximity to the pulley B and provided with a laterally-projecting peripheral flange a. lVeighted arms C C are pivot-ally connected at one end with arms I) of the pulley B at points in proximity to the outer ends of the latter. To each weighted arm, at a point in proximity to its pivotal connection with the pulley B, a pintle c is secured and projects laterally therefrom. To
each pintle c a shoe D is loosely connected and adapted, when the weighted arms 0 swing outwardly, to engage the inner face of the peripheral flange a on the pulley or disk 0. Each weighted arm 0 is provided, at a point between its ends, with a perforated ear (1 for the attachment thereto of a rod 6, which latter also passes through a guide f on an arm of the pulley B and extends some distance beyond said guide. The free end of each rod 6 is screw-threaded for the reception of a nut g, and located on each rod between the guide f and nut g is a spring 71, the tension of which can be regulated by means of the nut g. The nuts 9 will be adjusted in such manner as to cause the springs h to offer suflicient resistance to the movement of the weighted arms 0 to prevent the engagement of the shoes I) with the flange a of the pulley or disk 0 until the driven pulley B shall have reached acertain predetermined rate of speed. NVhen the driven pulley B reaches the desired rate of speed the weighted arms 0 will be thrown out by centrifugal force and the shoes made to engage the peripheral flange a of the disk or pulley 0, thus, in effect, locking the driven pulley B to the shaft A and causing the latter to rotate to drive the machinery connected with it. hen the speed of the pulley B decreases below the predetermined rate, the springs h will serve to withdraw the weighted arms O and the shoes carried thereby, and thus unlock or throw the machinery out of action.
It will thus be seen that the machinery connected with the shaft A will only be actuated when the pulley B reaches a certain predetermined speed, thus rendering the device valuable for controlling or governing the selffeeder of a thrashing-machine.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination with a shaft, a pulley loosely mounted thereon, and a pulley keyed thereon and provided with a laterally-projecting annular flange extending toward and in close proximity to the loose pulley, of weighted arms pivoted to the spokes of the loose pulley, shoes pivotally connected with these weighted arms near their pivots, and adapted to bear on the flange of the other pulley, a rod extending from each Weighted arm and having sliding connection with spokes of the loose pulley, a spiral spring on each rod outside of its point of connection with the spoke of the loose pulley and means for regulating the tension of these springs, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
