MILL-FEED REGULATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 241,797, dated May 24, 1881.
Application filed December 30, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM FREDERICK, J r., a citizen of the United States, residing at Uniontown,in the county of Fayette and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mill-Feed Regulators; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings,and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention has for its object to furnish an automatic mill-feeding device; and it consists in the construction and arra-l'igement of the several parts as hereinafter set forth.

A is the shaft, to which is fixed the millstone, and it is given motion by a gear-wheel placed on it, which meshes with another gear wheel connected properly to the power of the mill. This shaft extends upward, and has fixed to its upper end governor-arms a a.

Near the lower end of the sleeve 0 is an annular bearing, 0, in which is supported the plate (I. The ends of the plate (1 project laterally and have fixed to them rods d d, which pass down through the hopper O, and are fixed to a feed-tube, B, which rests down on, and its lower end is closed by, the disk 6 on the shaft A. Thelower end of the hopper is formed to fit into the upper end of the feed-tube B, so that the latter may be raised or lowered for purposes hereinafter set forth.
0 is a brace-bar fixed to the upper end of the hopper, and it is adapted to support in firm position the upper end of the shaft .A and rods d d.
D is an arm, having one end fixed to the frame by a pivotal joint at D, while the other end is carried past the feed-tube, and has placed on it a regulating-weight, D. At its point of attachment with the feed-tube it is provided with a collar or other suitable means, D by which it is connected to the feed-tube,
as shown. This arm is employed as a counteracting-weight against the governor, so that the feed may be regulated to any given speed at which the mill may be run.
The operation of my device is as follows: The grain desired to be ground is placed in the hopper and passes down into the tube B, in which it is held by the disk 6 when the mill is at rest. When the mill is started the governor-rods a a and sleeve 0 revolve with the shaft. As the governor revolves and the balls ascend by the centrifugal force they carry the rods b b with them, thereby raising the sleeve 0, rods (1 d, and tube B, which are connected together as hereinbefore set forth. They lift the tube 13 from the disk 6, and permit the grain to flow into the stone. The greater the speed the greater the centrifugal force, and consequently the farther the balls depart from the axis of rotation. Hence the tube B, by means of connections above stated, is raised without revolving higher, and permits more grain to flow out of it with greater speed of the machinery of the mill.
Thus, it will be seen, by means of my device, the grain is fed according to the speed at which the mill is running.
1 have described the central shaft, A, as being in one piece; but it will be readily understood that it may be made in two parts, coupled together by any suitable means, as shown in Fig. 4.
When the shaft is made in two parts the feed mechanism hereinoefore described may be readily connected to any ordinary mill-burr by any mechanic.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a mill-feed, the combination, with the governor a, of the regulating-arm D, having one end pivoted to the casing at D and connected intermediately between its endswith the adjustable feed-tube B, and having its other end provided with an adjustable counter-balance, D substantially as set forth.
