To cll whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALFRED J. ORMSTON, av citizen of the United States, residing at WVatertown, in the county of Jeiferson and 'State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Governors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in governors for steam engines, &c., and the object in view is to produce a simple and eihcient apparatus of this nature so arranged that the center of the weights of the governor may be such as to have the same degree of sensitiveness throughout the entire range of their stroke and so arranged that the governor may be more or less sensitive through either the upper or lower portion of its range.
My invention comprises various details of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts wh ch will be hereinafter fully descr bed, shown in the accompanying drawings and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
I illustrate my nvention in the accompany ng drawings, in which:

of the drawings) and forming knife edges fulcrun ed against the edges of the shells N, which engage recesses in the disks 0, the clrcumferences of which have annular grooves for the reception of the ends of the The. operation of my governor will be readily understood and is as follows: When there is a tendency for the, governor weights by centrifugal force, they will be resisted by thespring which is fulcrumed onthe edges of the shells N. When the governor is revolved at a suiiicient speed, a centrifugal force generated by the governor weights will over coine the resistance .of the spring and said governor weights will turn ea ant t upon the pivots C, causing the sleeve S to 7 action of the rollers H, the circumferences of said rollers being in con tact-with the opposite edges of the slots F. Said sleeve its movement is guided by the boss A of the base or fly. wheel, while the governor weights are guided by the rollers and the edges of the slots. As the clutch collar is attached to. the sleeve S, the upper movement of said sleeve will cause the collar to move therewith, being guided by the pin Q, which moves in the slot M and the movement of the clutch collar is adapted to. transmit a corresponding movement through mechanism not shown to the Valve mechanism of the prime mover.
By the provision of a governor embodying the features of my invention, it will be noted that, by selecting the proper angle for the rollers H, the force available for regulation of the sleeve Q may be made equal in the highest and lowest position and practically constant throughout the entire stroke and, by locating the fulcrum points of the shells N with reference to the pivotal points C at the center of gravity of the governor weights B, the latter may be made practically regular, that is so as to have the same degree of sensitiveness throughout the entire range of the stroke. In the event of it being desired, it may be made more or less sensitive through either the upper or lower portion of its range. Various degrees of sensitiveness may be obtained by using more or less coils of springs or by using springs of greater or less scale as may be desired. On account of having constant energy at the sleeve Q, the speed may be varied by placing a load upon the latter without changing the stability and, by arranging the bearings of the governor weights, as far as possible radially from the center of rotation, the friction which is produced when the governor is accelerated or retarded may be reduced to minimum and, by having the force exerted by the spring acting through approximately the center of gravity of the governor weights, very little friction due to centrifugal force will be produced.
hat I claim to be new is 1. A governor mechanism. comprising a shaft, a clutch collar splined thereto, a fly wheel fastened to the shaft, a sleeve rotatable about a boss projecting from said wheel, governor weights pivotally mounted upon the fly wheel, anti-friction wheels journaled upon projections of said sleeve and engaging slots in the inner edges of the governor weights, a spring connecting the latter, and connections between said sleeve and clutch collar, as set forth.
2. A governor mechanism comprising a slotted shaft, a clutch collar splined thereto, a fly wheel fastened to the shaft, a sleeve rotatable about a boss projecting from said wheel, governor weights pivotally mounted upon the fly wheel, anti-friction wheels j ournaled upon projections of said sleeve and engaging slots in the inner edges of the governor weights, a spring connecting the latter, a rod fastened to said sleeve and mount ed in a chambered portion of the shaft, a pin carried by the clutch collar and engaging said rod and movable within the slot of said shaft, as set forth.
3. A governor mechanism comprising a slotted shaft, a clutch collar splined thereto, a fly wheel having a central boss fitted upon said shaft, a nutupon the shaft engaging the end of the boss, a sleeve having a sliding movement over said boss, a rod attached to said sleeve, a pin carried by said clutch collar and engaging said rod and movable within slots in the chambered portion of the shaft, lugs projecting from the fly wheel, governor weights pivotally mounted upon said lugs, the inner ends of said weights having slots therein, anti-friction rollers carried by said sleeve and mounted one in each of said slots and adapted to contact with the opposite edges thereof to guide the governor weights, and a spring fulcrumed on and connected to the governor weights, as set forth.

A governor mechanism comprising a slotted shaft, a clutch collar splined thereto, a liy wheel having a central boss fitted upon said shaft, a nut upon the shaft engaging the end of the boss, av sleeve having a sliding movement over said boss, a rod attached to said sleeve, a pin carried by said clutch collar and engaging said rod and movable within slots in the chambered portion of the shaft, lugs projecting from the fly wheel, governor weights pivotally mounted upon said lugs, the inner ends of said weights having slots therein, projections upon the sleeve, rollers journaled upon said projections and engaging said slots, and a spring connecting the governor weights, as set forth.
5. A governor mechanism comprising a slotted shaft, a clutch collar splined thereto a fly wheel having a central boss fitted upon said shaft, a nut upon the shaft engaging the end of the boss, a sleeve having a sliding movement over said boss, a rod attached to said sleeve, a pin carried by said clutch collar and engaging said rod and movable within 'slots in the chambered portion of the shaft, lugs projecting from the fly wheel, governor weights pivotally mounted upon said. lugs, the inner ends of said weights having slots therein, projections upon the sleeve, rollers journaled upon said projections and engaging said slots, bolts fastened one to each governor head and each having a T- shaped end with tapering edges, shells against which said tapering edges bear, disks engaged by said shells, and springs connected to said disks, as set forth.
6. A governor mechanism comprising a slotted shaft, a clutch collar splined thereto, a fly wheel in ving a central boss fitted upon said shaft, a nut upon the shaft engaging the end of the boss, a sleeve having a sliding movement over said boss, a rod attached to said sleeve, a pin carried by said clutch collar and engaging said rod and movable within slots in the chambered portion of the shaft, governor Weights having arms which overlap and provided with registering slots, lugs projecting from the fly wheel, pivotal pins mounted in said lugs and upon which the arms of the governor Weights are journaled, projections upon said sleeve, pins carried by the projections, rollers journaled upon the pins and engaging said slots and a spring connecting the governor members, as set forth.
7. A governor mechanism comprising a slotted shaft, a clutch collar splined thereto, a fly Wheel having a central boss fitted upon said shaft, a nut upon the shaft engaging the end of the boss, a sleeve having a sliding movement over said boss, a rod attached to said sleeve, a pin carried by said clutch collar and engaging said rod and movable Within slots in the chambered portion of the shaft, governor weights having arms which overlap and provided With registering slots, lugs projecting from the fly wheel, pivotal pins mounted in said lugs and upon which the arms of the governor Weights are j ournaled, projections upon said sleeve, pins carried by the projections, rollers journaled upon the pins and engaging said slots T-shaped members fastened one to each governor weight shells engaged by the inner ends of the T-shaped member forming fulcrum points, grooved disks, each recessed upon adjacent faces and engaged by said shells, and a coiled spring, the ends of which engage said grooves, as set forth.
