Description
PATENTED JULY 21, 1908.
G. W. ST. JOHN.
GRATE.
' APPLICATION FILED mm. 5, 1907.
GEORGE W. ST. JOHN, OF STONEFORT, ILLINOIS.
GRATE Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 21, 1908.
Application filed December 5, 1907. Serial No. 405,227.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. ST. JOHN, citizen of the United States, residing at Stonefort, in the county of Saline and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grates, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is an improved grate which may be laterally adjusted to fit broad or narrow fireplaces and which may be readily set in place therein without the use of bricks or mortar or the like.
With this and other objects in view as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructions and arrangements of parts that I shall hereinafter fully describe and claim.
F or a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved grate, and Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof. I
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawing by the same reference characters.
My improved grate embodies two 'side members 1 which in the present instance are in the form of andirons, a plurality of grate bars 2 being secured at one end to the respective side members and extending inwardly therefrom. Some of these grate-bars 2 are secured at correspondingly elevated points of the side members and lie substantially in a horizontal plane to form the bottom 3 of the grate, the others being secured near the forward end of the side members and lying in a vertical plane to constitute the front 4 of said grate. In order to hold the other or inner ends of the grate-bars in proper position I have provided a support 5 between the two 1 side members, said support embodying a horizontal portion 6 and a vertical portion 7 at the front end thereof. The horizontal and vertical portions of the support extend along the bottom and the front of the grate respectively and are formed with transverse openings 8 which are designed to receive the inner ends of the grate-bars and to permit them to travel longitudinally therethrough. It will be obvious that by this arrangement the side members may be drawn apart or pushed together to laterally adjust the grate to fit fireplaces of different widths.
From the above description in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be seen that I have provided a simple, durable,
and efficient construction of grate which may be readily and cheaply manufactured, which may be adjusted to fit different sized fireplaces and which may be conveniently set therein.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
1. The herein-described grate, comprising two side members, a plurality of grate bars carried by the respective side members and rigidly secured at their outer ends thereto,
them to travel longitudinally through the support to effect the lateral adjustment of the grate.
2. The herein-described-grate comprising two side members, a plurality of grate bars carried by the respective side members and rigidly secured at their outer ends thereto so as to form the bottom and front of the grate, and a support positioned between the side members and embodying horizontal and vertical portions extending along the bottom and front of the grate respectively, and formed with transverse openings designed to receive the inner ends of the grate bars to slidingly support the same.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
GEORGE IN. ST. JOHN.
I/Vitnesses:
W. G. OSBORNE, JOHN BARKER.
