NON-REFILLABLE BOTTLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS M. KEAN, a citizen. of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Non-Refillable Bottles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in non refillable bottles, contemplating particularly the provision of a valved stopper or closure for the neck of a bottle, the object of the invention being to provide a simple and. effective construction of stopper or closure of this character and means for securing the same permanently within the neck of the bottle, whereby, after the bottle has been initially filled refilling will be effectively prevented, while removal of the closure and tampering with the valve thereof cannot be accomplished without breaking or otherwise injuring the bottle, thus giving visual evidence of tfie fact that the bottle has been tampered wit The invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in Wl1lCl1I- Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section through the neck of a bottle embodying my invention. Referring to the drawing, 1 designates the body of a bottle of any preferred form and construction, and which is provided with a neck 2, preferably externally threaded at its upper end, and provided adjacent its upper end with an internal bead or shoulder 3 whose inner surface is beveled or flared to form a seat for the upper end of the combined stopper and valve casing, as hereinafter described. Below the shoulder 3 the neck is formed with an annular series of spaced vertical recesses 4 gradually increasing in depth upward and terminating at their upper ends immediately below said shoulder.
After the bottle has been initially filled, the neck is closed by a combined stopper and valve casing 5, which generally tapers to conform to the tapering contour of the inner wall of the neck. The casing may be made of sheet metal or any other suitable material and comprises a tubular body portion having upper and lower heads 6 and 7, the upper head being formed with a final discharge port 8 and the lower head with a primary discharge port 9, the latter being controlled by a cup-shaped check valve 10, pivotally mounted within the casing and normally held closed by a spring 11.
The upper end of the casing terminates in line with the up er edge of the shoulder 3 and bears snug y against said shoulder, while the lower end of the casing bears snugly against the wall of the neck below the recesses 4, so as to effectually prevent possibility of leakage of the liquid from without between the casing and wall of the neck. The casing is provided on its outer side with a series of locking springs 12 equal in number to the recesses 4, and are indented or recessed, as at 13, to receive the sprin s for the greater portion of their length, the ower ends of the springs being riveted or otherwise secured to the casing, while the u g per ends thereof are bent outward at an ang e to enga e the lower edge of the shoulder 3 and thus lock the stopper and easing within the neck to serve as a permanent closure therefor.
It will be understood that in applying the combined stopper and valve cage, the upper outwardly bent ends of the springs recede into the depressions 13 when passing through the contracted space formed by the shoulder 3 by their contact with said shoulder, and
then after passing the lower end of the shoulder snap into the recesses 4:, thus preventing the stopper and easing from being withdrawn without breaking the neck of the bottle or mutilating the casing to such an extent as to give visual evidence of the fact that the bottle has been tampered with.
In order to prevent the introduction of a wire or other tool into the valve casing through the outlet 8 in an attempt to tamper with the valve 10, the casing is provided with an internal guard plate or disk 14 disposed immediately below the head 6 and arranged to prevent the further introduction of a wire or tool intov the casing, said disk being connected with the side wall of the easing by series of spaced radial fingers 15 arranged to form intervening ports 16 for the passage of the liquid. The outer end of the neck may be closed by a screw cap 17 engaging the threaded portion thereof, which cap is preferably provided with a plug or stopper 18 to close the opening 8, so that when said cap is applied any possibility of leakage of the liquid beyond the valve casing will be prevented while the neck will also be'closed against the access of dirt and dust.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. A bottle having a neck, a check valve closure within the neck provided with a discharge outlet, and a cap adapted to be applied to the neck and provided with a closure for said outlet.
2. A bottle having a neck, a check valve closure within the neck provided with a discharge outlet, and a cap adapted to be applied to the neck and having an inwardly extending lug to enter and close said outlet.
3. A bottle having a neck provided with an internal shoulder and recesses below the shoulder, a combined stopper and valve casing fitting within the neck, springs carried by the casing and projecting into said recessesand engaging the shoulder, a check valve in said casing, and a guard within the casing for preventing access to said valve.
4. A closure for bottle necks comprising a hollow body rovided at its lower end with a primary discharge port and at its outer end with a final discharge port, a spring-actuated check valve within the body controlling said primary port, and a guard disk within the upper portion of the body below the final discharge ort, said disk being provided with radial fingers connecting it with the side wall of the body and forming intervening passages.
