To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RINGLING R. MO- Gianoon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Waco, in the county of McLennan and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nebulizers and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in nebulizers and more particularly to that class adapted to be used for treating diseases of the head, throat and lungs and my object is to provide means for applying medicinal properties in the form of a spray to the parts affected.
A further object is to provide means for forming the spray and directing the same through a nozzle and a still further object is to provide means for directing air under pressure into engagement with the spray-forming mechanism.
Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings which are made a part of this application, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved nebulizer complete and ready for use. Fig. 2 is a sectional view through. the spray-forming mechanism, and, Fig. 3 is a similar view, the section being taken transversely to the section shown. in F 2.
Referring to the drawings in which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 indicates a case adapted to receive the parts of the nebulizer when not in use, said case be ing provided with a closure 2 at its upper end, whereby ready access may be had to the case.
Located within the case 1 is any suitable form of air compressor or pump 3, which pump is provided with an operating handle 1, by which means the pump is operated.
Extending from the pump 3, is a conveying pipe 5, the end thereof farthest from the pump being secured to a terminal 6, which extends tlnough one wall of a socket 7, the free end of the terminal being extended upwardly and preferably at right angles to the axial plane of the body of the terminal.
The upper end of the socket 7 is preferably interiorly threaded to receive the threaded Specification of Letters Patent.

end of a bulb 8, which bulb is preferably constructed of glass, mica, or similar transparent material and surrounds the upper end. of the terminal 6 and extends a distance above the same.
The lower end of the socket 7 is exteriorly threaded and provided with a shoulder 9, the threaded portion of the lower end of the socket being adapted to be engaged by the threaded portion of a cup-shaped receptacle 10, the lower end of the receptacle being provided with a depending flange 11, thereby forming a base for the receptacle, whereby the receptacle and parts above the same will be supported in a vertical position when resting upon the flange.
The receptacle 10 is adapted to retain medicinal liquids and in order to convey the liquids from the receptacle and discharge the same through a nozzle 12, a tube 13 is extended parallel with the vertical portion of the terminal 6 and is secured thereto in any preferred manner, as by means of a collar 14, which surrounds the tube and terminal adjacent their upper ends, the extreme upper end 15 of the tube 13 being slightly restricted and curved laterally, so as to extend over the restricted upper end of the terminal 6, the opening in the curved end 15 extending slightly beyond the axial center of the vertical portion of the terminal 6, while the lower end of the tube 13 is extended into the receptacle 10 and to a point adjacent the lower end thereof and, by so arranging the parts, when the pump 3 is operated, the air passing through the terminal will draw the liquid through the tube 13.
The inner end 16 of the nozzle 12 is extended through the wall of the socket 7 and bent upwardly parallel with the upper end. of the tube 13 and the vertical port-ion of the terminal 6, said end being held in juxtaposition to the tube and terminal by the collar 14, the highest portion of the end 16 being slightly below the upper end of the terminal 6 and the fluid drawn from the receptacle 10, is conveyed into said opening in the end. 16 by means of an agitator 17, which agitator is suspended above the end of the terminal 6 by means of a bracket 18.
The agitator is provided with a plurality of blades 19, which are placed at an angle to the horizontal and the axial center of the agitator is placed at one side of the axial center of the vertical portion of the terminal 6, so that the air forced through said terminal and the fluid drawn through the tube 13 will be directed into engagement with one edge of the agitator and the force of the air on the inclined portions of the blades 19 will cause the agitator to rapidly revolve, thereby forming the fluid into a spray and directing the same into the open end of the nozzle 12, the increasing of the volume of air passing through the terminal resulting in a finer vaporization of the fluid.
As shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the draw ing, the outer end of the nozzle 12 is provided with a tip 20, said tip being shaped to lit the nasal passages and prevent air entering the same around the end of the nozzle, but, when the nebulizer is used for treating the throat or lungs, a diflerent form of tip 21 is employed in connection with the end of the nozzle, so that the medicinal properties may be readily carried into engagement with the throat and lungs.
In applying my improved nebulizer to use, the medicinal liquid is placed in the receptacle 10 and the receptacle secured to the lower end ol the socket, the passage of air between the receptacle and socket and the bulb and socket being prevented by introducing gaskets 22 and 23 between the shoulders 9 and receptacle 1.0 and a rib 24 on the bulb 8 and upper end of the socket, respectively. The handle 4 is then operated and air pumped into the bulb 8 through the pipe 5 i and terminal 6, the force of the air passing the end of the tube 13, causing a suction at this point, which will result in drawing the medicinal fluid from the receptacle and direct ing the same into engagement with the blades of the agitator, the force of the air from the terminal 6, rotating the agitator and thus vaporizing the medicinal fluid, the fan action of the agitator forcing the vaporized fluid through the nozzle 12 and into engagement with the parts being treated.
Then the nebulizer is not in use, the re ceptacle 10 and parts attached thereto may be placed in the case 1 and the closure secured in position over the upper end of the case, thereby forming a very compact instrument and one that will occupy but a minimum amount of space.
What I claim is:
A nebulizer comprising the combination with an air compressor, of a receptacle, a bulb secured to said receptacle, a terminal extending through the wall of the receptacle and projecting upwardly within the bulb, means to convey air from the pump to the outer end of the terminal, a nozzle extending through the wall of the receptacle projecting upwardly within the bulb, a tube arranged within the bulb and receptacle, said tube extending from a point adjacent the bottom of the receptacle and terminating in a restricted portion curved to extend above the upper end of the terminal, said upper end of the terminal being also restricted, a strap surrounding the upwardly extending portion of the nozzle and terminal and around tube to hold the same in position, a bracket projecting above the terminal held thereto by the strap and an agitator carried by the bracket above the terminal, said agitator being rotatably movable in a horizontal plane.
