UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY WEINHAGEN, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK;
IMPROVEMENT IN ATOMIZERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 201,967, dated April 2, 1878; application filed January 19, 1878.
and-useful Improvements in Atomizers, of
which the following is,a specification:
My invention relates to atomizers of the kind commonly employed to facilitate the inhaling of medicated liquids; and its object is to combine or organize all the parts commonly comprised in such articles in one instrument.
My invention consists in an atomizer for inhaling medicinal vapors, comprising the combination of a base or stand, a steam-generator, a vessel for medicinal liquids, suction and supply tubes, a face-shield, and a handle extendin g from the base or stand on the side nearest the face-shield, andconnected with thebracket for supporting the vessel for medicinal liquids, whereby I produce a durable instrument, which may be handled with great facility, because well balanced, and which entails less danger of burning the wrist when turning the instrument toward the mouth than do those atomizers which are provided with a handle on the side of the base or stand farthest from the face-shield.
My invention also consists in a face-shield for an atomizer, comprising a flaring mouth, a tubular portion, and having in one side of said tubular portion a bulge, cavity, or chamber for collecting condensed liquid, and isolated entirely from the flaring mouth, whereby the said chamber does not interfere with the passage of the spray of liquid through'the shield.
It also consists in details of construction to be hereinafter explained.
. support a steam-generator of suitable form.
B designates a steam-generator of spherical or spheroidal form, provided with a filling-mouth, c, fitted with a screw-cap, d, having a flange, e, which rests upon the top of the base-piece or stand A, and having a flat bottom, which enables it to stand upon any flat support in an upright position. It is also provided with a socket, f, in which is fitted a suction-tube, O, surrounded by a packing, g, of cork or other suitable material, and connected with a supply-tube, D, so that the ends of the two tubes are in proximity to each other, and that a jet of steam issuing from the suction-tube will induce a suction at the mouth or tip of the supply-tube, sucking or drawing up liquid and atomizing it in the ordinary manner. E designates a vessel for containing medicated liquids, which may be of glass or other suitable material, and is shown as of cylindrical form, terminating in a flaring mouth or top. This vessel E is supported upon an arm or bracket, F, shown as extending from the base-piece or stand A, and connected to the upper end of a handle, G, shown also as extending from the base-pieceor stand A. Preferably the arm or bracket F is provided with a cup, S, into which the vessel E may be fitted, and thereby precluded from displacement. H designates a face shield or tube, made of glass or other suitable material, occupying a horizontal, or nearly horizontal, position on the same side of the base-piece or stand as the handle G, and having a flaring mouth opposite the tips or adjacent ends of the suction and supply tubes 0 D. It is supported in a holder, I, which may advantageously consist of a semicircular spring-clasp, supported by an arm, J, fitting in a socket, K, arranged on the arm or bracket F or handle G, or at the junction of these two parts, said arm J being removable from the socket K at pleasure. 1f preferable, it may loo-supported in the two-arm holder M. (Shown in dotted v outline.)
I have shown this face shield or tube Has provided on the lower side or portion of its wall with a bulge, H, forming a chamber, in which liquid formed by the condensation of steam and collection of the atomized medicated liquid therein may collect, and thereby be precluded from entering the mouth of the patient. This face shield or tube H is prefer ably inclined slightly toward the vessel E, conthe vessel for medicinal liquids, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. 'A face-shield for an atomizer, comprising a flaring mouth, a tubular portion, and a bulge, cavity, or chamber in one side of said tubular portion, and entirely isolated from the said flaring mouth, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
