CALVIN R. DAVIS, OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR TO OLIVER CHILLED PLOW WORKS, OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA.
PLOW. A
Specicaton of Letters Patent.
Patented July 14, 1908.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, CALVIN R. DAVIS, of South Bend, in the county of St. Joseph and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plows; and I do hereby declare thefollowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such aswill enable others skilled inthe art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to 'improvements in plows and more particularly ,to j ointer holders therefor,-one object of the invention being to provide a jointer holder in which the vertical and lateral adjustments can be effected independently of each other.
A further object is to provide a device of the character described which shall be simple in construction; comprise few parts, and which shall be easy to adjust.
A further object is to so construct a ointer holder that, when clamped to the plow beam, will not be liable to shift or change its position under heavy strain when at work.
With these objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation showing the application ofmy improvements to a ig. 3 is a similar view showing the lateral adjustment of the jointer.
My improved holder comprises a plate l, having in its central portion an enlargement 2, the outer face 3 of which is convex. Holes 4 5 are provided in theplate or casting l above and below the convex enlargement 2 and approximately in line with the respective en s of said enlargement, for the passage of the arms of a U-bolt 6, by means of which the holder is secured to a 4channeled plow beam 7. The free ends of the arms of the U-bolt are threaded for the reception of nuts 8 which abut against the face of the plate or casting 1. The convex enlargement 2 is provided with a vertical slot or opening 9.
through which the shank I0 of the jointer passes. This shank, and consequently the pglow beam. Fig. 2 is a.
jointer, can be secured at any desired vertical adjustment by means of a set screw 11 passing through a boss l2 on the plate or casting l and enga ing said shank.
It will be seen t at byloosening one and tightening the other nut 8 on the clamping U-bolt, the holder will be thereby rocked on the plow-beam and this will accom lish the lateral adjustment of the jointer an the latter may be adjusted in or out of line with the landside of the plow base as the case may require. Such lateral adjustment will be permitted on account ofthe convexbearing of the holder against the channeled plow beam.
From the construction and arrangement of parts as above described, it will be noted that the vertical and lateral adjustments are independent of each other, and this is important for the reason that whenthe jointer is adjusted in proper line with the plow base, said jointer may be raised or lowered as required without interfering with the lateral adjustment and vice versa.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is,-
1. In a ointer holder, the combination of a plate or casting having an opening for the passage of the shank of a j ointer, means for securing said shank to said plate atany desired vertical adjustment, and means for adjustably securing the device toa plow beam.
2. In a jointer holder, the combination of a plate or casting provided on one side with a convex enlargement havin a vertical opening for the passage of the s ank of a j ointer, means for securing said shank to theplate or castin at any desired vertical adjustment, said p ate or casting provided with holes above and below said convex enlargement, a U-bolt having its arms passing through said holes, and nuts on the free ends of the arms of the U-bolt,l substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination with a plow beam, of
a plate mounted to rock thereon, means forf securing said plate in position, and means for securing a jointer shank to said plate at any desired vertical adjustment. v
4. The combination with a ploW beam, of In testimony whereof, I have signed this a plate mounted to rock on one side thereof', speelioation in the presence ol two subserib- 10 means for securing a jointer shank to said ing Witnesses. plate at any desired adjustment, and means 5 engaging said beam and plate for rocking the latter and securing it to the side of the beam Iitnesses:
to hold the vertically adjustable jointer at FRANCIS C. N IPPOLD, different lateral adjustments. A. A. FREDERICK.
