MARI C. WILSON,"OF NEW ORLEANS, LOU,ISIANA`.
GAnMEN'r-ASTENING.
'Patented July 14, 190s.
application flied nay s1, 1907. serial No. 376,514.
Be it known `that I, MARI C..W1LsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at'New Or? leans, inthe parish of Orleans. and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements' in .Garment- Fastenings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention contemplates certain' new' and-falseful improvements in garment fasten' ings', articularly hook and eye fastenings, and t e invention is desi ned for use generally wherever it isdesireigl to quickly fasten ortions-or ed es'of a garment, the inventionlfleing. designe .particularly for the-fastening of waists, vforinstance the waists such as are known as' tightfitting, loose, or maternity waists, although it -is to be understood' that the invention is also applicable for use in fastening skirt plackets girdlesand the like.
The invention has for itsl primary object, a new article of manufacture which is formed` com lete in itself, vand which will expedite and acilitatethe work of dressmakers, seamstress'es, or others, the device saving considerable labor in that it can be easily applied and without 4the necessity of the operator securing the hooks and eyes or other f'astenings to the waist or other part which it is desired. to fasten. f l
For a full understandi of the invention and the merits thereof aridi-'also to acquire al' knowledge of the details of construction, of the means for effecting the result, reference is' to be had to thefollowing description and accompanying drawings, in' which:
-Figure 1 is an inner face view of one-.em-` bodiment' of my invention. Fig.V 2 is a similar view of another embodiment thereof. Fi 3 is a similar view of another slightly modi 'ed form: Fig. 4 isa detail view of one of the.
cloth strips in its-fielded or creased condition,
preparatory to bein vstitched to form one part ofthe complete article: Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional view, vthe section.` being aan substantially on the line 5-56f Fig. 1. Fig. 6 isan enlarged detail view illustrating the staplingof the hooks and eyes to the two strips of the fastening.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following-description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters. i In carryin out my invention I take two stripsof clot of any kind desired or found smtable, and of any predetermined length l,and Width, according as the taste or judgment may dictate, and I creaseA each of these strips longitudinally alon the center line as indicated at 3. I next fol .the raw edges inwardly so as to' roduce'twoother longitudinal creases 4; IE5
the raw edges of the strips are sealed and se cured between 'the inner folded edges, next form a longitudinal row of stitching 5 at one edge of each of these folded-strips, namely the edge where the first crease was made, and I then set in each of' these folded strips, a stay 6 of whalebone, feather bone or any other suitable material. These stays ma be of any desired length, within reasonable.. ounds,
y this means, it is evident,
and it isv vintendedthat they shall extend mi dle longituull lengthof the extend above and below the ends of the' stays, the latter will be securely held in place. The eyes 10 andv hooks 11 'are then secured, either by stitching 12 or staples 13, in two rows or series along the meeting edges of the folded stri 's' 1 and 2. i
In that form o the invention illustrated in Fig.`1, the eyes 10 are .set so las to project beyond theA margin of the strips, the complemental hooks 11 are set back fromthe edge of the strips a distance corresponding to the projecting ortions of the eyes, and the eyes and hooks a ternate on .the respective strips, as clearly illustrated in the drawing. By this means the common type of hook and eye may be employed, that is wlthout any hump or fastening device, and the two portions of the garment fastening will be securely held together against casual or accidental `detachis manifest, will be found particularly useful in maternity walsts, as the lwaist portions of s in whichA invention illustrated in 7' extending along .the meline of the stays 6,". and I then form anthe strips may be loosened as the Wearermay find convenient'orneeessary j In that mbodiment of the invention illus tratedxin Fig. 3, all of the essential features of the form illustrated in Fig. l are employed, thel only dierence being in the arrangement v'of the hooks andeyes,l the eyes in Fig. 3 beingV vall onone strip and the hooks on the other strip. In such instances it willbe found advisable to use hurnped hooks 11, to secure thel pro er fastening. This type or embodiment o the invention may be-made either in facture and complete in itself and which will' 'expedite' and render easy the. work of the dressmaker or the like, because it Willonly be 25 necessary to insert the edges ofa waist `lining or other` garment betweenthe two free edge 4portions 9, of two plies each, that are formed in the manner hereinbefo're set forth, all of the Work of attaching the stays and hooks `and eyes or eyelets for the lacing, having been done before hand. I
It is obvious thatv the invention can also Vbe used in 4the fastening of girdles and skirt plackets merely by cutting away the boned portion of the fastening. The boned portion `can be used for the'fastening of two girdles,
andthe remaining unboned portion can be used for fastening a skirt placket. If an unbon'edwaist fastening-is bought, it is evident that it can be cut in halves and used for two skirt plackets.
Having thus described the invention, is claimed as new is:
1 As a new article of manufacture, the herein-de'scribed garment fastening, consisting of what a pair of cloth strips, each creased longitudinally at its middle and again creased along two other longitudinal lines, the end portions being turned inwardly, a line of stitching extending longitudinally -along said strips at ing extending longtitudinally through the stays, the said lines of stitching extending above and belowv the stays whereby to assist in preventing longitudinal movement there* of,.and fastening devices attached to the respective strips and arranged for interlocking engagement.
2. As an improved article of manufacture,
4the herein-described garment fastening. consisting of two folded strips having inturned ends and provided withfree edgeportions of two plies each, a longitudinal line of stitching in each strip, at the opposite edge thereof,
thereof, other lines of stitching extending longitudinally throughout the length of the strips, one of said lines of stitching passing through the stay and the other just outside of the outer edge of the stay, hooks and eyes secured to the respective strips, for a portion of the length of the latter, the-strips being provided in their remaining portions with eye lets, and a lacing'adapted to be threaded through said eyelets. l
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
