Description

J. HBGGBN'. CLOTHES DRIER. APPLIQATION FILED APR. 3, 1 907.
ATTORNEY PATENTBD JULY'1'4, 190s.
, UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN HEGGEN, OF SEATTLE, WASHINGTON, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO ADOLPH E. OHRISTOPHERSON, OF SEATTLE, WASHINGTON.
CLOTHES-DRIER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN HEGGEN, citizen of the United States, residing at Seattle, in the county of King and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes-Driers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to im rovements in clothes-driers of that class w ich are provided with a vertically movable member having radiating arms upon which the articles to be dried are hung.
The object of the invention is the erfecting of such devices to provide one of simple and inexpensive construction, which is of neat appearance, occupying but little space, and is efficient in operation.
The invention consists in the novel construction, adaptation and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a clothes drier embodying my improvements with the lower portion shown in section and, for clearness, some of the sticks omitted. Fig. 2, a horizontal section of the same taken on line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3,'a vertical longitudinal section of the head; Fig. 4, is an enlarged cross sectional view of one of the sticks to illustrate the wire stick-links; and Fig. 5 is a perspective detail view of the outer portion of one of the sticks to illustrate one of the offices of the stick-links.
In the drawings, the reference numeral 5 represents a standard adapted to be fixedly secured, as by screws 6, to a room -wall or a like upright surface. This standard is formed desirably of wood and is provided in its side edges with longitudinal grooves 7 and has in its front face a similarly arranged central groove 8.
Slidabl attached to the standard is a head 9 adapte to be slidably mounted upon the standard 5 by a frame portion 10 which embraces the standard in front of said side grooves 7 and terminates in inwardly directed elongated ends 11 which engage with these side grooves. Connected integrally with said frame portion of the head as by diverging bracket arms 12, is an arcuate front ortion comprised of an upper web 13 and a ower web 14 with rad1a ly' disposed inwardly curved interconnecting ribs 15.
The webs 13-14 are concentric and of un- Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed April 3, 1907. Serial No. 366,096.

equal radii, the lower one protruding beyond the periphery of the other to furnish a shelf upon which are fulcrumed the clothes sticks 16 when in operation. These sticks are inserted in the interstices 17 between said ribs and are retained therein by any suitable means which is incapable of being drawn through the respective interstices, as, desirably, a wire ring 18 at one end and a link 19 pivotally connected at the other end of a stick. Such a link, see Fig. 4, is formed of spring wire which is doubled centrally of its length as at 19' and thence extends for a short distance and is bent outwardly as 19 and then continued in two arms 19' substantially parallel and terminate in opposing rectangularly bent ends which are sprung into a hole 20 from opposite sides of the stick.
-21 is a bridge-piece connecting the web 13 with the portion 10 of the frame and is pro vided with an aperture 22 and a communieating notch 23 at the side thereof next to said frame. The function of this notch is to receive the line 24 by which the head is suspended, and, to make a connection between the line and the head, the part 2 3 of the latter is made with a concavity 25 immediately below the notch for the reception of a knot 24 formed upon the end of the line. This line is extended about a grooved sheave 26 mounted in a pulley housing 26 secured to the to of the standard 5 whence it passes throug the aperture 22 and is fastened in a bifurcated attachment 27 at the bottom of the standard by providing knots, such as 24 at suitably spaced positions to respectively 7 engage beneath the claws of this attachment when the head is in its lower and uppermost positions. To facilitate the movement of the head and to furnish additional support therefor, said frame portion of the head is provided with pendent arms 28 to carry the axle 29 of a roller 29 which travels in the groove 8 and serving as an antifriction bearing, and likewise through engagement with the sides of the groove prevents lateral tilting of the head in event of the uneven loading of the head.
When the device is not in use the sticks are dropped through the interstices 17 of the head so that the rear ends of the sticks will be at the bottom and in relatively close relation with the standard, thus occupying but little space. 0 c
When the drier is to be used the head, if

not already so located, is brought to the bottom of its travel and thereat secured by the proper knot of the line being engaged beneath the claws of attachment 27. The sticks are now thrust upwardly through their interstices to bring them into radial positions in a horizontal plane and whereupon they are prepared to receive the clothes which are successively hung by forming a fold in each to receive the respective stick.
Ordinarily the doubling of the fabrics over the sticks will suflice to prevent their falling 'ofi, but if not the links 19 may be thrown back, as shown in Fig. 5, to engage individually over the adjacent edges of the fabric. This feature of the invention is particularly advantageous where a drier is to be employed outside of a dwelling and where subject to winds. However, the links may also otherwise serve a useful function by allowing articles of clothing which are to be dried being caught in the contracted parts of the link or in two adjacent links and hung droopingly therebetween, thereby increasing the capacity When the drier has been thus supplied with clot-hes it is elevated through manipulating the said line as a hoist and then secured by engaging the knot of the line with the claw attachment as before explained.
Having described my invention, what I claim is,-
In a device of the class described, a standard adapted to be secured to a stationary support and provided with longitudinal grooves in the side faces and a longitudinal groove in the front face, a head having an. arcuate front portion provided with an upper web and a lower web and radial inwardly curved ribs connecting said webs, said head being provided with spaced apertures between said ribs for receiving the clothes supporting members and with side arms provided with lugs engaging the side channels of the standard, said head having a bridge piece provided with an aperture and having a notch at one side thereof communicating with said aperture, said head having a depending arm provided with a terminal guide roller operating in the front longitudinal channel of the standard, and means for adjusting said head and its attachments longitudinally of the standard.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
