Description
@esta 6 ed, tant @tutti wam/ww- ELI CRANDALL, OF WILLIAMSTOWN, NEW YORK.
Letters Patent No. 89,294, dated April 27, 1869.
IMIPROVED TABLE-CARv 0R CASTER.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the smc.
' do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and
exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specication, in whichv *Y Figure 1 is a vertical section, taken longitudinally through the centre of the improved car, mounted upon its track.
Figure -2 is an elevation of one end ofthe same.
Figure 3 is a view of the sectional rail-track.
-Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
The nature of my invention consists in a portable reservoir-car, which is adapted for containing milk, water, and various other drinks, and which is provided with shelves, and other receptacles for receiving bottles, sirup and cream-vessels, and avariety of things required by persons while eating, and in the employment, in cornbination with such a ear, of a movable folding-rail track, which is to be laid down in the centre of a table, and serve as a guide for the car, for allowing it to be conveniently moved from one end to the other of the table, by persons sitting thereat, as will be hereinafter eX- plained.
I am aware that travelling-shelves, and suspended casters, have been permanently applied to dinin g-tables, for supplying persons with such articles of food as they may require while eating; but such contrivances are generally complicated and inconvenient, and are not adapted for tables of ordinary construction.
' To enable others skilled in the art to understand my invention, I will describe its construction and operation.
The body of my improved car is subdivided, so as to aiiord several apartments, A, B B, two of which, B B, are adapted for containing milk, water, lemonade, or other drinks, and the central apartment is provided with drawers C C, for containing spoons, knives, forks, and other articles required about a table.
On top of the central apartment may be constructed a rack, c, for containing cruets and bottles of various descriptions, such as usually accompany table-casters, while ou top of each duid-apartment B, shelves or steps, a a a, afford supports for various other articles used about a table.
The reservoirs B B may be lined with a metal or enamel, which will not communicate a bad taste to, nor be acted upon by the liquids contained in them, and these reservoirs should be provided wlth cocks for drawing oii the liquids.
rlhe car is mounted upon danged wheels, d al, the axles of which have their end-bearings in' pendants D D; and these wheels are adapted for rolling upon rails G G, which are secured together in short lengths by cross-ties G Gr. f
The lengths or sections of rails may be hinged tof gether at their ends, so that they can be folded up when not in use, or they may be provided with latches, or other devices for connecting them together, when laid down upon a table.
At the extremities of the rails, stops may be formed for preventing the car from rolling o.
It will be seen from the above description, that I have a combination of portable casters, containing liquidreservoirs, with portable-rail guides; and that the latter can be readily arranged along the centre of a table after the cloth is spread, and removed again after meals. The casters or car can be moved about upon rails, from one end of a table to the other, by the persons seated thereat, or by the servants, without interfering with dishes, or other objects upon the table.
The car orl casters may be made of metal, or other suitable material, and finished so as to be highly ornamental, as well as useful; and the rail-sections maybe adapted for both long and short tables, by using supplemental sections.
Having described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
vThe portable table-car or caster, constructed with chambers and shelves, and mounted .upon wheels or runners, all substantially as and for the purpose described.
ELI L. ORANDALL. Witnesses:
l). S.. Poms, ISAAC WulLIAMs.
