FASTENING DEVICE FOR RUBBBRS.
APIPLIOATION E'ILED APR.12.1907.
` ment permitted to the jaw 5 on the pivot pin HENRY R. NELSON, OF WALNUT GROVE,`MINNESOTA.
. FASTENNG DEVICE FOR RUBBERS.
Specification o' Letters Patent.
Patented July 7, 190s.
Application led April 12, 1907. Serial No. 367,749.
To-a-ll whom it may concern.:
Be 1t known that l, HENRY R. NELSON, of Walnut Grove. Redwood county, Minnesota,
have invented certain new and useful Im-A rovements in Fastening Devices for Rubers, of which the following is a specification.
In walking over a muddy road or street, the over shoe or rubber will frequently stick in the mud and be pulled off the shoe as the foot is lifted in the act of walking.
The object of my invention is to provide means for securing the rear portion. of the rubber or oversl'ioe to the shoe to prevent its being accidentally pulled off.
The invention consists generally in variou constructions, and combinations, all as hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing, Jforming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a view o f the foot and ankle showing the rubber or overshoe on the shoe with the foot raised in the act of taking a step, my invention being illustrated in place on the `shoe.A Fig. 2 is an edge view of the clamp. Fig. 3 is a rear view Showing the clamp closed. Fig. 4 is a similar view showing the clamp open. Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line a-- of Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a detail view showing curve in the aws to conform them to the curve of the rubber. Fig. 7 is a sectional view on the line y-y of Fig. 3. Figs. 8 and 9 are detailed ,views of the clip or fastening device by neans of which the loose end of the string is secured.
In the drawing, 2 represents a shoe and 3 a rubber or overshoe. 4 and 5 are `jaws,
referably of metal loosely secured together y a ivot pin 6. The jaw 4 .is preferably provi( ed with a series of teeth 7 on its lower edge. The up er cn'd of the aw 4 has an eye 8 formed therein and a cam .9 that is ada ted to engage the jaw 5 and force the ends of the jaws apart and causo their lower edges to be moved toward one another to grip anymaterial that may be inserted between them. If the edges are swung to the position indicated in Fig. 4, there will be sutllcient moveto allow the upper edge of the counter portion of the rubber to be inserted between the edges and then when the law 5 is swung to the position indicated in ig. 3, the edffe vof the rubber will be gripped and firmly Alield. The jaw 5 also has an eye 1() and a string 11 is threaded through the eyes 8 and 10 and is of suflicient length to extend around the ankle and the upper of the shoe.
A plate 12 is attached to one end of the' string and is provided with oppositely arranged spring tongues 13, under which the free end of the strm is inserted and drawn taut and held securely b the tongues until it is desired to remove tie. device from the foot. .The plate with the s ring tongues permits the clam s to be easi y and quickly ut in place on t e shoe or removed therefrom without the necessity oftying or untyin a knot.
do not wish to be confinedv to the particular form of clamping jaw-s illustrated herein as the. same are capable of. modification. and still have substantially the same functions and other means may be employed for securing the loose end of the string without departing from the spirit of my invention.
.I claim as my invention:
1. A fastening device for rubbers comprising pivtally connected jaws having curved lower edges to conform toI thc curve of the rear portion of the rubber,-one of said jaws having a series of teeth, a cam mounted lon one of said jaws and adapted to engage the other to force the lower ed es together and a string attached to sai jaws and adapted to extend around the ankle, substantially as described.
2. A fastening device for rubbers, comprising disk- shaped jaws 4 and 5 centrally pivoted together and having curved lower edges, one of said curved lower edges having a series of teeth and said jaws having projections with eyes or loops formed therein, one of said jaws having a cam surface to engage the projection on the other jaw and hold them in their clamping position, and a oord passing through said eyes or loops and adapted to be secured around the ankle, substantially as described.
3. A fastening device for rubbers, comprisug jaws centrally pivoted together and jaws and extending around the ankle," to
having lower edges between Which the' edge secure the device to the foot. .10 v oit the ruhher is inserted, one of said jaws In Witness Whereof,Iliave hereuntoset my being adapted to swing in a plane parallel hand this 6th day'orl A ril 1.907. substantially Vith Ithe plane of the other jaW v HE RY R. NELSN.
and one jaw having a @am edge to engage the Witnesses: y
other jaw, whereby they Will be held in their H. O'. GARLo'oK,
looked position, and means attached to said C. J. NELSON
