Description

N0. 892,07Ei. PATENTED JUNE 30, 1908.
I. OLSON. LOAD BINDER.
APPLICATION FILED JAN 13, 1908.
ate wnomzt mag-concern:
Be it known that I, Isaac OLSQN, a citizen- ISAAC oLsoN, or BELLINGHAM. wasnnve'roiv.
. LOAD-BINDER:
Application filed-January 18,1908: Serial Ila-410,657.
, of the United States residing at gellingham,
- in s, in which in the county of Whatcom and State of 1 Washington, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Load-Binders, of which the following is a specification, referenoe being had to the accompanying draw- I y invention relates to improvements in load binders for use upon log and lumber wagons and the like.
The obj eot of the invention is to provide a device of this character which will be simple, inexpensive, strong and durable in construction, which may be conveniently applied and operated and which when moved to its closed position will be self locking. With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction and the combination and arrangement of (parts hereinafter described and claimed, an
illustrated in the accompanying drawigure is a perspectiveview' of the load binder inits open position; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same in its closed position;
7 and Fig. 3 is a plan view.
to i improved l dad binder consists of an operating-lever 1 and twohook-shaped links 2' 3. The lever 1 has at one of its ends a suitable handle 4 andadjacent to its other end is an enlarged portion 5 which is curved both longitud nall and laterally or transversely, as more clear y shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The extremity 6 of said portion 5 of the lever is thepart of the same that is laterally curved or offset and said extremity is substantially in longitudinal alinement with the body and handle portion of the lever, so that the central part. of the longtitudinally curved ortion 5 is without the longitudinal axis 0 the lever, for a purll'ppse presently explained. The hooks or 1i 2-, 3 are arranged upon 0 posite-sides of the'lever and both have tl ieir inner ends laterally curved or offset as at 7 tocorrespond to the lateral curve of the,
end f the lever.
2is pivoted'upon a stud 8 projecting from The said end of the link one side of the extremity 6 ofv the lever and it is' preferably retained upon said stud by asiplit pin!) and a washer 10.. The correspon end of the other link 3 is similarly'retaine u on a pivot stud 1-1 projecting in an opposite fi-ection fromthe central part of the curved.
portion 5 of the lever.
. Specification o: Letters Patent.
' plane, of the offset inner ends of said links, as
-ter of the line'of strain u on thelinks or Patented June 30, 1908.
While the free ends of the links 2, S-maybe provided withany suitable means -;for engagement with the endsof the chain, cable or other binding element which surrounds the load, I'pre'lerably'proivide--them 'Witll' the hooks 12, 13 as illustratedf Thesehooks 12,
13 are formed by bending the outer ends of the links upon themselves laterally in the moreclearl shown in Fig. 3, inordcr-that the line of raft or strain may e in substantially the same longitudinal plane. The oflset ends of the lever and links, also shown,
more clearl in Fig. 3, tends to further straighten the line of draft, as will be readily understood. In order to more eifectively lock the parts in their stretched position %d to relieve the pivot studs of strain I'pre'fera 1y provide upon one side of the lever 14 or projection 14 which is adapted to take over the link 2, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
In use, the chain or other tie is around the load and its ends are engaged with the hooks 12, 13 Whenthe parts of the device are in their open osition, as shown in Fig. 1. Thelever 1-is t en swung to the left so that the lip or projection 14 receives the link 2 between it and the lever. Owing to the shape of the inner erid of the lever and" to the arrangement of the'pivots 8, 11; it will be\ seen that when said lever is 'swung to its closed position both pivots will pass the cein.v
hooks so that the device wi dock itselfin its closed. osition.-
It W1 1 be noted that the device isexceedingly simple and inex ensiv'e in construction, that it is strong and urabie in useand that it is exceedingly quick and convenient in Q1)- eration.
P se
Having thus described my invention what I Iclaim'is:
1. A load binder, comprising a lever having one-end laterally offset and a longitudinally curved-portion adjacent to said end, links arranged on .op osit sides: of the lever and havin laterailv offset ends to' corres ond with t e on set end of the lever, one link eing' pivoted up'r'ln one side of the curved portion upon the other side of the offset en ofthe same, the outer ends of said links being bent. upon themselves laterally 'into the ane of their offset inner ends to prq'vid'e 'hoo substantially'as and for the purpose specified.
'2. A load binder comprising a lever having i .of the lever andthe, other link being ivoted tial y as descri one end, linkserranged upon the opposite to its end, an a 'p or projection upon the lever ada ted to engsag; one of the links, substan- 3. The herein described load binder 'comprising a lever having a longitudinally curved ortion adjaoenfito one on pivot studs profecting from the opposite faces of'the lever,
,one stud beingladjecent to one end of the lever and the ot or upon the curved portion of the same, links disposed u on opposite sides rofthe lever and engage wi h said pivot 's longitudinally curved portion adjacent to l studs, means for retaining the links u on said studs, the inner or pivoted ends of t e links and the adjacent end of the lever bein laterelly offset and the outer ends ofsai links being bent laterally to provide hooks disposed in the lanes of'theinner ends of said inks, and a 1p or projection upon the lever adapted to engage one of said links, substantially as set forth.
In testimony-whereof I hereunto aflix my 25 signature inthe presence of two witnesses. ISAAC OLSON. Witnesses:
