PERKINS O. HATFIELD, OF NEW GRLEANS, LOUISIANA.
STANDARD.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, PERKINS O. Ha'rrrnLD, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Standards, of which thefollowing is a specilication, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in releasable stakes or standards for log cars wagons and other vehicles.
One object of the invention is to provide an improved stake or standard fastening means which will be strong and durable and capable of being quickly and easily released.
Another object of the invention is to provide a stake or standard fastening means with an improved releasing or throw oil' device whereby a load of logs etc. may be readily released or dumped without danger to the operator.
1vVith the above and other objects in View, the invention consists of the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a beam or bolster showing one embodiment oi'' my invention applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same; Fig. 3 is an end view; Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of one of the standards; Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of a portion of the bolster showing a modified form of my invention applied thereto; Fig. 6 is a plan view of the parts shown in Fig. 5; and Fig. 7 is a detail cross sectional view taken on the plane indicated .y the line 7-7 in Fig. 6.
Referring more particularly to Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive of the drawings, 1 denotes a bolster or beam ot a logging car, wagon, sled or other vehicle and 2 denotes one of my improved stakes or standards which latter may be mounted on either or both ends of the bolster. This standard is in the form of a straight, flat metal bar pivotally mounted to swing on a transverse horizontal pivot 3 and disposed in a vertical notch or recess 4 in one end of the standard. By mounting the bolster in this manner it may swing outwardly and downwardly to release the load. YVhen the bolsterin made of wood its ends may be surrounded by one or more reinforcing or wear plates 5 as shown.
Specification of Letters Patent.

The standard 2 is retained in its upright position by a chain or other flexible element 5 the intern'iediate portion of which en gages a shoulder 7 in the form of an integral outwardly projecting lug or hook formed on the outer edge of the standard as shown more clearly in Fig. 4. One end olf the chain G is suitably anchored and its other end adapted to be releasably secured. Such releasable free end carries an elongated eye or link 11 adapted to t over an eye 10 projecting transversely from one side of the bolster. This eye 10 is preferably in the form of an eye bolt the body portion 9 oi which passes transversely through the bolster and the projecting opposite end ol which serves as the fastening means for the anchored end of the chain 6 as will be seen on reference to Figs. 1, 2 and 3, a retaining nut 8 being applied to the other end of the eye bolt.
12 denotes a locking member for the chain in the form of a pin which is inserted in the outer portion of the keeper eye 10 after the link 11 has been placed thereon. To prevent the loss ofthe pin 12 it may be connected by a chain 13 to a staple or eye 15 on the bolster.
14 denotes a releasing or throw oil' member arranged in the inner portion of the keeper 10 and adapted to be actuated in the outward direction to move the link 11 off of said eye after the locking member or pin 12 has been removed. rThis releasing member 14 is preferably in the form of a lever one end of which may be pivotally mounted on the bolster by means or the staple 15 or any other suitable means and the intermediate portion of which extends through the eye 10. The tree end of the lever 14 is preferably oifset as shown at 16 and provided with an outwardly projecting handle 17.
ln the embodiment of the invention illustrated in Figs. 5, 6 and 7 of the drawings the keeper or keeper eye 10a is in the form ot' a staple and the locking member or pin 19.a which is formed by an angularly bent end of'a swinging arm 18 pivoted at 19 on one side of the bolster. The swinging arm or lever 18 has a straight vertically extending portion arranged beneath the curved or offset port-ion 1Ga of the releasing member or lever 14a whereby when the arm 18 is swung inwardly to move the locking pin 12a out of the keeper eye 10a the releasing member or lever 14a will also be actuated in an outward direction to throw the chain link 19 olf of the eye 10a. Owing to this construction it will be seen that the curved offset portion 1Ga serves as a cam for engagement by the arm 18 when the latter is swung inwardly to releasing` position. Any means may be provided for actuating and locking the arm or member 18 but l preferably einploy a link or rod 20 which extends longitudinally of 'the bolster so that the stake may be released from the side of the car opposite to the one on which the stake is mounted. This rod 2O has one of its ends pivoted at 21 to the arm or member 18 and on its free end is a loop or other' suitable handle 22. Its intermediate portion is bent or offset to form a shoulder 3 which is adapted to drop into engagement with the lower portion of a supporting and guide staple Qa arranged on the bolster and through which said rod 2O extends. lVhen the offset 23 is arranged in the staple 24ras shown in Fig. 5 the latter serves as a keeper to lock the rod 20 against longitudinal movement and consequently locks the arm 18 and locking pin 1Q in effective position. Then it is desired to release the stake or standard 2 it is only necessary to grasp the handle 22 lift it slightly and then pull the rod 20 longitudinally to swing the arm 18 inwardly whereupon the pin 12 moves out of the lever 141u and 'the straight portion of the arm 18 actuates the lever 14 to cause it to push the chain link 11L off of the eye 10a.
`Various changes in the form, proportion and arrangement of parts may be made within the spirit and scope of the invention.
